Download or read book The Flavonoids written by Jeffrey B. Harborne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flavonoids, one of the most numerous and widespread groups of natural constituents, are important to man not only because they contribute to plant colour but also because many members (e.g. coumestrol, phloridzin, rotenone) are physiologically active. Nearly two thousand substances have been described and as a group they are universally distributed among vascular plants. Although the anthocyanins have an undisputed function as plant pigments, the raison d'etre for the more widely distributed colourless flavones and flavonols still remains a mystery. It is perhaps the challenge of discovering these yet undisc10sed functions which has caused the considerable resurgence of interest in flavonoids during the last decade. This book attempts to summarize progress that has been made in the study of these constituents since the first comprehensive monograph on the chemistry of the flavonoid compounds was published, under the editorship of T. A. Geissman, in 1962. The present volume is divided into three parts. The first section (Chapters 1-4) deals with advances in chemistry, the main emphasis being on spectral techniques to take into account the re cent successful applications of NMR and mass spectral measurements to structural identifications. Recent developments in isolation techniques and in synthesis are also covered in this section. Advances in chemical knowledge of individual c1asses of flavonoid are mentioned inter aha in later chapters of the book.
Download or read book Methods in Polyphenol Chemistry written by J. B. Pridham and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods in Polyphenol Chemistry documents the proceedings of the Plant Phenolics Group Symposium held at the University of Oxford, on 2-4 April 1963. The symposium focused on the methods and techniques which made advances in the chemistry and biochemistry of phenolic compounds possible. The development of paper chromatographic and ultraviolet spectroscopic techniques was particularly important and largely responsible for the rapid growth in knowledge of polyphenols which has occurred during the last 10-15 years. In addition to these two methods other spectroscopic techniques were dealt with at the symposium. Particular mention should perhaps be made of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy which is becoming increasingly important in polyphenol chemistry. Modern chromatographic methods such as thin layer and gas-liquid techniques will probably be used extensively in the future. These will enable the analyses of polyphenol mixtures to be carried out more rapidly and with greater resolution. Polyamide chromatography also has high powers of resolution, although this technique has not been widely used owing to difficulties in obtaining supplies of polyamide powder. This situation has now improved, however.

Download or read book Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans written by Paul Gepts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period following the second world war has witnessed an expanding commitment to incr~ased food production in tropical countries. Public and private initiatives at the national and international levels have led to the creation of programs geared specifically towards the improvement of food crops in tropical conditions. Examples of this increased commitment are the network of international agricultural research centers and numerous bilateral aid projects. As a consequence, crop improvement has become a truly worldwide endeavor, relying on an international network of institutions and collaborators. This holds also for Phaseolus beans. Following the discovery of the Americas, Phaseolus beans became distributed on all six continents. Yet, until not so long ago, most of the research on Phaseolus improvement took place in developed countries. In recognition of the nutritional importance of Phaseolus beans in developing countries, this has changed considerably in the last years, principally perhaps through the activities of the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) and the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR). Consequently, the scope of the research on Phaseolus has broadened considerably and the number of Phaseolus researchers is larger than ever before.
