Book excerpt: Ho Chi Minh (1890 - 1969), born Nguyen Sinh Cung and also known as Nguyen Ai Quoc, was a Vietnamese Marxist-Leninist revolutionary leader who was prime minister (1945-1955) and president (1945-1969) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). Book excerpt: "When Ho Chi Minh died in 1969 Time magazine wrote: "No national leader has stood so stubbornly or so long before the enemy's guns." Ho was a man who understood how to compromise without losing sight of his goal, but he will perhaps be best remembered as the leader who attempted to humanize Marxism. And yet although the name of the first President of Vietnam is known throughout the world, the figure behind the Presidency has remained in the shadow; until now there has been very little biographical material available in this country." --Page [2] of cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ho Chi Minh is one of the towering figures of the twentieth century, considered an icon and father of the nation by many Vietnamese. Pierre Brocheux's biography of Ho Chi Minh is a brilliant feat of historical engineering. In a concise and highly readable account, he negotiates the many twists and turns of Ho Chi Minh's life and his multiple identities, from impoverished beginnings as a communist revolutionary to his founding of the Indochina Communist Party and the League for the Independence of Vietnam, and ultimately to his leadership of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and his death in 1969. Biographical events are adroitly placed within the broader historical canvas of colonization, decolonization, communism, war, and nation building. Brocheux's vivid and convincing portrait of Ho Chi Minh goes further than any previous biography in explaining both the myth and the man, as well as the times in which he was situated.
