Book Pocketful of Rockets

Download or read book Pocketful of Rockets written by Jim Eckles and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013-10-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informative and entertaining look at the history of White Sands Missile Range. Not only does the author delve into V-2 rockets, missiles gone astray into Mexico, and the introduction of African oryx, but he also tells how the Apache fought buffalo soldiers there in 1880, how Sheriff Pat Garrett investigated the Albert Fountain murder and how ranchers lived on the parched lands raising both cattle and goats. The history of the first atomic bomb test at Trinity Site is covered in detail as well the various searches for the fabulous and mythical Victorio Peak treasure of gold bars. Eckles even provides the military history behind programs responsible for the Roswell UFO phenomenon. The author worked in the missile range's Public Affairs Office for 30 years and had access to most of the Range. He interviewed many of its early pioneers, men and women who made White Sands the birthplace of America's missile and space activities. In the process, he collected many stories that provide that extra insight into the historical events he writes about. This is a rare look under the covers at the largest military installation in America. The missile range's isolation and sensitive testing mission have made it relatively invisible to most. Pocketful of Rockets reveals some of that history and provides a look at the landscape before the military moved in.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the official flag raising on July 9, 1945, the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) has become an integral part of global defense for the United States. A mere week after formation, Project Trinity tested the first atomic bomb at an isolated site, which was 100 miles north on what was then part of the Alamogordo Bombing Range--a test site for B-17 pilots. Back at White Sands Proving Ground, as it was then named, personnel were unaware of the massive new weapon tested to their north. Instead their focus was upon the arrival of what would be 300 railroad cars of captured German V-2 rockets and associated equipment. Later that year, over 100 captured German scientists, among them Werner von Braun, would arrive at White Sands to assist in V-2 technology, launching America's race to space; tens of thousands of rockets and missiles have since been fired on the range. Thousands of family members also lived and worked at the range, and their stories can be found inside as well.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945, the United States Army established a testing center for rockets and guided missiles in south-central New Mexico. Named White Sands Proving Ground, this center was the locale for many of Americas first steps towards space. Rockets and Missiles of White Sands Proving Ground chronicles major activities at the base from 1945-1958. During this period, the Army, Navy, and Air Force all tested missiles at the desert installation. This book details the development and testing for such missiles as Hermes, Corporal, Nike Ajax, Sergeant, Honest John, and Viking. These missiles formed the backbone of much of Americas arsenal during the Cold War and represented major technological advancements. In 1958, the White Sands Proving Ground became the White Sands Missile Range, as it is known today.

Book excerpt: Established in south-central New Mexico at the end of World War II, White Sands Missile Range is the largest overland military reserve in the western hemisphere. It was the site of the first nuclear explosion, the birthplace of the American space program, and the primary site for testing U.S. missile capabilities. In this environmental history of White Sands Missile Range, Ryan H. Edgington traces the uneasy relationships between the military, the federal government, local ranchers, environmentalists, state game and fish personnel, biologists and ecologists, state and federal political figures, hunters, and tourists after World War II—as they all struggled to define and productively use the militarized western landscape. Environmentalists, ranchers, tourists, and other groups joined together to transform the meaning and uses of this region, challenging the authority of the national security state to dictate the environmental and cultural value of a rural American landscape. As a result, White Sands became a locus of competing geographies informed not only by the far-reaching intellectual, economic, and environmental changes wrought by the cold war but also by regional history, culture, and traditions.

Book excerpt: Descended from the greatest horses of the American West, the wild horses living on the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico -- one of the most dangerous places on Earth -- were a national treasure and a living legend. Big, strong, beautiful, and fierce, their ancestors were the mounts of the famous lawmen, hardy cowboys, and notorious outlaws who had once ruled the Wild West. Over the years, these far-flung herds of the Land of Enchantment had inspired many myths, and were said to be guarded by an implacable band of enormous, ghostly stallions that kept them from harm. But in 1994, after decades of suffering through droughts, food shortages, and all the dangers that go with living on a military-weapons testing site, scores of horses suddenly died. And almost two thousand were in such dire straits that they were unlikely to survive. In a race to prevent more tragic deaths, large-animal veterinarian Don Höglund was called in to organize and lead a team of dedicated cowboys, soldiers, and other professionals in removing the surviving horses and their babies to safety. Then would come the challenge of rehabilitating them, and eventually placing them in loving homes with people who could meet the needs of the highly spirited wild animals. For the first time in book form, Nobody's Horses tells the dramatic story of these noble horses' celebrated history, their defiant survival, and their incredible rescue. During the complex rescue, stampedes, escapes, and injuries ensued as well as struggles with animal rights activists and army officials. Everyone was in constant danger from unspent munitions on the ground and missile testing in the air. Cowboys, Native Americans, and ranchers -- all of whom cared deeply about the fate of the horses -- clashed in a battle of wills. And, of course, there were the horses themselves -- wild, extraordinarily powerful animals, not easily managed or moved, who would become known to their rescuers as fascinating, individual characters -- the wily old mares who evaded capture and led their bands to water and food, the beautiful colts and their amazing resilience and ability to bond with humans and each other, and the magnificent, powerful stallions who protected their harems and young against humans and predators. Luckily Höglund's team was also extraordinary, and their mission a celebrated success for all the people involved, the horses that were rescued, and the grateful families who adopted these living pieces of an American legacy. Filled with history and heroism, adventure and rivalry, and, ultimately, the heartwarming alliances between horses and people, which made the whole endeavor worthwhile, Nobody's Horses will stir the emotions and imaginations of horse lovers, humanitarians, and anyone who loves an uplifting tale of second chances. It's a story of how Nobody's Horses became Everybody's Horses.

Book excerpt: Prior to World War II, the Tularosa Basin of Otero County, New Mexico, was primarily ranching land. During the war, this isolated region was utilized for bombing practice and nuclear testing. The Legacy Project, funded by the Department of Defense, sought to document the histories and lifestyles of the numerous ranching families who were displaced by these military activities. Consultants who had ranched the area were interviewed by project staff. The collection includes both taped and transcribed interviews, photographs, and miscellaneous materials such as maps and brands, all documenting ranch life in the Tularosa Basin from 1900 until the 1940s.

Book White Sands and the Southwestern National Monuments 1933 1953

This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of White Sands National Monument from its founding until its departure from the Southwestern National Monuments in 1953. This is not a history of White Sands Missile Range even though elements of its history would become interwoven with the national monument's history. This should explain that the emphasis of this history is White Sands as a national monument. A few of the National Park Service's administrative goals and struggles against the military's intrusion into its physical boundary and National Park Service policies as highlighted. The military's arrival and establishment of permanent army and air force reservations in the Tularosa Basin resulted in the inevitable clash of War Department and Department of the Interior mission objectives. The two departments' primary missions were incompatible. Several of the early encounters between the National Park Service and the military are described to illustrate the problems which existed between the War Department and Department of the Interior. The National Park Service's reorganization of Region Three resulted in the removal of White Sands from the Southwestern National Monuments in 1953. Consequently, White Sands entered into another phase of its history as a National Park Service national monument.

  • Author : Jim Eckles
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2015-02-13

  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Trinity written by Jim Eckles and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the history of Trinity Site, where the first atomic bomb was tested on July 16, 1945. The test, in an instant, ushered the world into the nuclear age. Unlike other books that focus on Los Alamos or the Manhattan Project, this book describes what went on at the bomb test site - how the test bed was prepared, who did the work, how they lived in the desert and what happened to the site after the war. The book is filled with first-hand accounts and anecdotes given to the author by the men who were actually there. Also, the story continues after the end of the war as the National Park Service proposed the site be declared a national monument. The Department of Army vetoed such proposals because the site sits in the middle of White Sands Missile Range. A compromise was to make the site a national historic landmark. Eckles explains what happened to many of the artifacts associated with the test, like Jumbo and the control bunker, how the site's open houses have grown to see thousands of visitors each year, and what the radiation issues are all about. Included are many photographs of the site, some of which have never been published before. In 2013 Eckles published "Pocketful of Rockets: History and Stories Behind White Sands Missile Range" that included a chapter on Trinity Site. He has extracted that chapter, one of 29 in the large volume, and reworked it, beefing it up with additional information and photos. It now stands alone as an educational and entertaining guide to Trinity.
