Book An Analysis of the Common Missile and TOW 2B on the Stryker Anti Tank Guided Missile Platform Using the Janus Simulation

Download or read book An Analysis of the Common Missile and TOW 2B on the Stryker Anti Tank Guided Missile Platform Using the Janus Simulation written by Samuel L. Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army is beginning to field the first of six Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCTs) and equip the organic Anti-Tank (AT) Company of the Brigade with the LAV III Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) Platform and the Tube-Launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided 2B (TOW 2B) missile system. A developmental effort is currently underway to replace the aging TOW 2B and Hellfire missile systems with a common missile that meets both ground and air requirements. With increased range, lethality, and target acquisition capability, the Common Missile (CM) is being designed as the primary weapon system for the Army's Comanche helicopter and is a candidate for the lethality system of the Future Combat System (FCS) within the Army's Objective Force. Additionally, the CM is designed to be "backwards compatible" with existing TOW 2B and Hellfire launch platforms. The objective of this research effort is to determine the increase in operational effectiveness through the employment of the CM in the AT company of the SBCT in three different scenarios, using the high-resolution Janus Combat Model. Operational effectiveness will be assessed and statistically analyzed using lethality, survivability, and engagement range for three measures of effectiveness (MOEs).

This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual, “Airdrop of Supplies and Equipment: Rigging Heavy Antitank Assault Weapon System (TOW),” tells and shows how to rig TOW weapon systems and missiles. The TOW can be low-velocity airdropped from C5, C-17, C-130, and C-141 aircraft. The description of the items covered in this manual is: A TOW missile in its overpack weighs 87 pounds. Its length is 57 ½ inches, its width is 12 inches, and its heights is 12 inches. TOW missiles are rigged in overpacks in A-22 containers in three configurations, in the M416, ¼-ton trailer, and on type V platforms; The M16, ¼-ton trailer with seven encased missiles weight 1, 170 pounds. It is 109 inches long, 61 inches wide, and 44 inches high; The M966 HMMWV-series truck with six TOW missiles, the launcher, traversing unit, and guidance system weighs 8, 810 pounds. It is 180 inches long, 85 inches wide, and is 69 inches high in reduced configuration; and the Improved TOW Aiming System (ITAS) can be substituted for the guidance system mentioned above in the M966 or M1121 truck. It consists of the traversing unit, battery power source, fire control subsystem, and target acquisition unit subsystem.

Book An Analysis of Common Missile and TOW 2B Using the JANUS Combat Simulation

Download or read book An Analysis of Common Missile and TOW 2B Using the JANUS Combat Simulation written by Rachel A. Kruse and published by . This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army is currently developing a new close combat missile system, Common Missile, to replace the aging Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided (TOW 2B) and HELLFIRE missile systems. The Common Missile will have a greater range and improved target acquisition capability over the current missile systems. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the performance of the Common Missile and the TOW 2B missile in a simulated ground battle situation in three varying terrain conditions. This thesis used the Janus high resolution combat model to simulate the missile systems in a Desert, European and Mediterranean environment. Each of the scenarios used a force-on-force battle to measure effectiveness. Data were gathered from the Janus created postprocessor files of the three scenarios. The analysis compared three measures of effectiveness (MOEs) in the areas of lethality, survivability and engagement range. The goal of the analysis was to determine performance differences between the missile systems by comparing the mean of the simulation results.

Book The Air Force and the National Guided Missile Program

Download or read book The Air Force and the National Guided Missile Program written by Office of Office of Air Force History and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-03-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical monograph was originally planned as part of a multi-volume history of the USAF guided missile program. However, personnel, organizational, and program realignments within the USAF Historical Division Liaison Office (AFCHO) forced abandonment of these plans. Consequently, the scope of the study is not that initially contemplated but its content seemed of sufficient interest to warrant publication. The monograph covers generally the so-called national guided missile program that slowly evolved between the closing months of World War II and the beginning of the Korean War. More particularly, the monograph treats the interplay among the numerous national security agencies as it concerned guided missiles. The guided missile was among the first weapon systems to be subjected to the disadvantages as well as the advantages of constant scrutiny and intervention at the interservice level. Moreover, this condition was aggravated no little by the interest, but not the forceful leadership, of a number of joint and other national security agencies a niche or more above the level of the services. In a sense, then, the guided missile became the "guinea pig" from which grew the paradoxical situation of both a centralization and proliferation of authority and responsibility over weapon development and use. Only in recent years has this peculiar set of circumstances been altered under the persistent pressure of strong centralization in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. For these reasons, the record of service actions and counteractions from the early guided missile years may well serve as a worthwhile addition to "lessons learned" documentation.
