Book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps

Download or read book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington: The Soldier and the Christian To train and prepare men for the field, without which no exertion in the moment of action will avail much; to supply their necessary wants, so far as circumstances will permit; to restrain licentiousness; to support the honor and dignity of the corps to be attentive to the clothing, seeing that it is always in place, in order, and well put 011, without which a soldier in rags and a soldier in uniform differ little in appear ance; to have the arms and accouterments always in order; in a word, to abide strictly by military rules, regulations, and orders; these constitute the essence of a soldier and are characteristic of good officers. Without these, no service can be well conducted, and every service must be dis agreeable, sluggish, and expensive partak ing more of the nature of militia, than the regularity of well organized troops, which may and ought to move like clock-work, where the component parts discharge their respective duties with propriety and exact. Ness. I entreat you to communicate what I have said to the gentlemen of the line, and at the same time to assure them of my warmest esteem and best wishes for their welfare and success. Jan. 9, 1777 I earnestly recommend to you to be circumspect in your choice of officers. Take none but gentlemen; let no local attachments influence you; do not suffer your good nature, when an applica tion is made, to say yes, when you ought to say no; remember that it is a public, not a private cause, that is to be injured or bene fited by your choice; recollect also that no instance has yet happened of good or bad behavior in a corps in our service, that has not originated with the officers. Do not take old men, nor yet fill your corps with boys, especially for captains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book American Military History Volume 1

Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

C: Written Expressly for Little People MY publisher gives it as his Opinion that a great many persons will be offended at what I have said in this work. He thinks, also, that quite a number of our great generals will be seriously dis turbed in their dignity on seeing what liberties my artist has taken with them. Such opinions as these are rather too common with publishers in this country, who generally take very narrow views as to what public men think and do. This work was not written to offend, but to amuse and instruct little people. I have too much respect for our great generals to believe that they will feel offended at what I have said of them. Some of our little generals may perhaps take exception to the positions my artist has assigned them, and feel disposed to make war on him. But there will be nothing new in this. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Reminiscence of Washington and Early's Attack in 1864 I soon learned that there were those whose conduct had rendered this strictness necessary. I can recall to-day the gloom - the depression of spirits preceding an impending crisis - that pervaded the entire North just before Grant started through the Wilderness - an awful quiet which preceded the storm of battle. The people realized that an important crisis had come, and a death struggle was at hand. This had just begun as I reached Washington anxious to join my battery and take a part in the campaign then opening. I found my battery at Camp Barry - the artillery camp of instruction - with its re-enlisted veterans returned from furlough, its ranks strengthened with recruits, and awaiting expected orders to go to the front. Owing to formalities required it was some days before I was regularly mustered into the United States service. I improved my spare time in visiting the public buildings and grounds, and making a trip to Alexandria, where I visited the Marshall House, in which Elsworth had been killed; saw the stockades built to protect the city from surprise by a sudden assault of the enemy's cavalry, and examined some of the earthworks surrounding it. I saw there the first slave-pen 1 had ever seen - the old slave-mart where, previous to the war, Virginia slave-stock had been bought and sold - now converted into a prison. It seemed, even then, a relic of a past and barbarous age. There it stood, visible evidence of a wrong that had a legal existence, which, in the light of to-day, seems an impossibility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Washington, Vol. 1 of 3: A Biography Personal, Military, and Political AT the close Of the Civil War, in which the Government founded by washington and his compatriots vindicated its rightful authority and the truth that an enlightened people may be safely invested with political sovereignty, it seems to be an appropriate service to present to that people a full record of the life and times of their great leader, to whom the lovers of liberty in all lands pay the homage of profound veneration. He will ever appear in History as the central figure of the group of statesmen who fashioned a Re public out of several independent colonies, and established a Nation upon the representative principle which makes Democracy compat ible with a stable and powerful central government, having the form of an Aristocracy, but absolutely responsible to, and under the control of the People.
