This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen In early times litigants were accustomed to appear in Court in propria persona, but an altered system obtained towards the close of the fifteenth century, when the personal attendance of the parties to civil actions was dispensed with, excepting when the proceedings might result in the defender being declared infamous. In ordinary cases parties were permitted to appear by a representative or substitute, called a procurator, who had been formally appointed to win or tyne the cause. The term procurator was at first held to be sufficiently wide in its meaning to include any one patron or friend, to whom a litigant committed the management of the proceedings in an action. Book excerpt: This volume, the earlier of the two-volume official History of Aberdeen, provides a comprehensive picture of the development of the two historic burghs of Old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen over their first seven centuries, from 1100 to 1800. As early as the 14th century, Aberdeen was: recognized as one of the 'four great towns of Scotland'. Early settlement, the growing townscape and social change over the centuries are all traced. Aberdeen's contacts with the sea and other towns overseas and its economy and politics, both local and national, are assessed. And Aberdonians themselves, the vital forces behind the history of the two burghs, are highlighted: their faith and culture, homes and health, and their education and pastimes are all rediscovered.

Book Cultures of Law in Urban Northern Europe

Download or read book Cultures of Law in Urban Northern Europe written by Jackson W. Armstrong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing together an international team of historians, lawyers and historical sociolinguists, this volume investigates urban cultures of law in Scotland, with a special focus on Aberdeen and its rich civic archive, the Low Countries, Norway, Germany and Poland from c. 1350 to c. 1650. In these essays, the contributors seek to understand how law works in its cultural and social contexts by focusing specifically on the urban experience and, to a great extent, on urban records. The contributions are concerned with understanding late medieval and early modern legal experts as well as the users of courts and legal services, the languages and records of law, and legal activities occurring inside and outside of official legal fora. This volume considers what the expectations of people at different status levels were for the use of the law, what perceptions of justice and authority existed among different groups, and what their knowledge was of law and legal procedure. By examining how different aspects of legal culture came to be recorded in writing, the contributors reveal how that writing itself then became part of a culture of law. Cultures of Law in Urban Northern Europe: Scotland and its Neighbours c.1350–c.1650 combines the historical study of law, towns, language and politics in a way that will be accessible and compelling for advanced level undergraduates and postgraduate to postdoctoral researchers and academics in medieval and early modern, urban, legal, political and linguistic history.

Book Scottish Emigration to Colonial America 1607 1785

Download or read book Scottish Emigration to Colonial America 1607 1785 written by David Dobson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before 1650, only a few hundred Scots had trickled into the American colonies, but by the early 1770s the number had risen to 10,000 per year. A conservative estimate of the total number of Scots who settled in North America prior to 1785 is around 150,000. Who were these Scots? What did they do? Where did they settle? What factors motivated their emigration? Dobson's work, based on original research on both sides of the Atlantic, comprehensively identifies the Scottish contribution to the settlement of North America prior to 1785, with particular emphasis on the seventeenth century.

Book Legal Practice in Eighteenth Century Scotland

Download or read book Legal Practice in Eighteenth Century Scotland written by John Finlay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph to analyse the workings of Scotland’s legal profession in its early modern European context. It is a comprehensive survey of lawyers working in the local and central courts; investigating how they interacted with their clients and with each other, the legal principles governing ethical practice, and how they fulfilled a social role through providing free services to the poor and also services to town councils and other corporations. Based heavily on a wide range of archival sources, and reflecting the contemporary importance of local societies of lawyers, John Finlay offers a groundbreaking yet accessible study of the eighteenth-century legal profession which adds a new dimension to our knowledge of Enlightenment Scotland.
