Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Religious Society of Friends, Called by Some the Free Quakers On the Southwest corner of Fifth and Arch Streets in the City of Philadelphia, there stands a small substantially built brick Meeting House, which has for many years been occupied by the Apprentices' Library Company. The gable end of the building fronts on Arch Street, and has built into it a marble tablet bearing this inscription: - "By General Subscription, For the Free Quakers, erected, In the year of our Lord, 1783, Of the Empire 8." Nearly every building of the old City has, since this date, been torn down and replaced by edifices suited to the changing needs of commerce; but this house stands, the memorial of a past age, and is the only monument now left of the heroism of certain members of the Religious Society of Friends, in the stormy time of the Revolutionary War. The story is now nearly forgotten, and if not recorded may perhaps soon be lost entirely, and it is for the purpose of preventing this; and to answer questions which the author of these notes has often been asked as to the origin of the Free Quakers, that he now attempts to revive from the torn and faded records of the old times, the history of that Society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address of the Representatives of the Religious Society of Friends: Commonly Called Quakers, in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, &C., To the Citizen of the United States At a Yearly Meeting of Friends held in Philadelphia, by adjournments from the 17th of the Fourth month, to 21st of the same, inclusive, 1837. The suffering condition of our fellow men, descendants of the African race, who are subjected to the rigours of unconditional slavery, having long engaged the sympathy and commiseration of this meeting, the subject was referred at our last annual assembly, to the serious attention of the Meeting for Sufferings. An address to the citizens of the United States, prepared by that meeting, was now introduced by the reading of their minutes, bringing into view the injustice of slavery, the enormities which it authorises by the traffic in the persons of men, extensively prosecuted within the United States, and the degradation of morals unavoidably attendant on such an unrighteous system, wherever it is tolerated; and inviting our fellow-citizens to a calm and dispassionate examination of this momentous subject, with a sincere desire to act in conformity with the principles of universal righteousness, in according to that people the enjoyment of their natural and religious rights; - as likewise the numerous and complicated injuries inflicted on the aborigines of our country, and the duty incumbent upon us of endeavouring to extend to the feeble remnant of these once numerous tribes, the benefits of civilized life and religious instruction: - which address being read and deliberately considered, was approved; and that meeting was directed to procure the printing of such number as they may judge needful for general distribution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from I Have Called You Friends: The Story of Quakerism in North Carolina The test of any teacher is: Has he acquainted his students with the subject taught? In like manner the criterion by which any organization should be judged is: What has it done for its adherents? The writer has now passed the patriarchal age of four-score and has been associated with the Society of Friends all his life. The challenge must be met. What has fellowship with the Quakers accomplished? George Fox said he was not satisfied with being a Seeker he wanted to be a Finder. It is only because I am conscious of having become a Finder that this book has come into being. Fellowship with Friends has brought me into fellowship with the Eternal Christ, and that fellowship has developed for me purpose and accomplishment; it has set an objective and a pat tern. My father passed ou when I was twelve and circumstances compelled me to quit school and go to work, I was thirty before unexpectedly college doors opened before me. Since then I have been associated with colleges and universities for more than forty years. For this I am gratefully indebted to the Society of Friends. They have indeed been Friends, and I am conscious that the foun dation of that Friendship is the Fellowship of the Spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Testimony of the Religious Society of Friends, Commonly Called Quakers: Respecting Some of Their Christian Doctrines and Practices The present is a period wherein we apprehend the enemy of souls is busily at work, endeavouring, with all the deceivableness of unrighteousness, to beguile the unwary, and to draw us away from a steadfast adherence to those doctrines and practices into which our primitive Friends were thus divinely led; in order, if possible, to frustrate the work of regeneration in individuals, and to hinder the spread of those princi ples and testimonies which, we believe, we were raised up as a people, to uphold and promulgate in the earth. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Careful and Free Inquiry Into the True Nature and Tendency of the Religious Principles of the Society of Friends, Commonly Called Quakers: In Two Parts The materials of this volume were gleaned from various sources; and during that period in which the society of Friends struggled into existence. In that extraordinary period, when death had removed the head of that party which had been flung into power by the whirlwind of faction, the British nation replaced its native prince on the throne of his fathers. But Charles II. was an unprincipled man. He neither feared God, nor regarded man. He was a Jesuit in politics, a Judas in religion, a Nero on the throne. Irreclaimable even by the lessons which the nation had given his family, in the reigns of his father and grandfather; and deplorably and culpably ignorant of the duty and the art of ruling; and in a great degree a stranger to the character and disposition of that high-minded people, over whom he was placed as chief magistrate, he came to the throne with all the errors of a Stuart, if possible, tenfold increased. His reign, under the tutorship of Lauderdale, exhibited little else than misrule, and tyranny and cruelty. The kingdom he claimed as his inheritance by birthright. The treasure, and the bodies, and the consciences of the people he considered as his property; and as much at his disposal as his moveables, or the tenants of his stables. By the act of supremacy of A. D. 1669, procured by the most corrupt influence, he received power over all matters and persons, ecclesiastical and civil. He modelled the form of worship and government in the church according to his will. He denied to the people the right of electing their ministers, or of thinking for themselves, or of taking care of their own souls.
