Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Parish of Banchory-Devenick Like many works of a similar character, the following History of the Parish of Banchory-Devenick is more or less a compilation drawn from material published and unpublished. While of a fragmentary nature, and in many respects incomplete, the subject-matter has been carefully verified as far as possible, although, for the sake of brevity, cumbrous lists of authorities have not been stated. The illustrations throughout the work have been introduced with a view of interesting the reader, and at the same time pictorially preserving several objects which arc likely, in the course of time, to be lost sight of. The Author tenders his most grateful thanks to the many kind friends who have aided him in the collection of matter. He acknowledges his special indebtedness to Mr. A. M. Munro, Town House, Aberdeen, and Mr. J. Malcolm Bulloch, M.A., Aberdeen (the latter is responsible for the chapter on the Bridge of Dee), both of whom have rendered signal service. Book Guide to Mysterious Aberdeen

Download or read book Guide to Mysterious Aberdeen written by Geoff Holder and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aberdeen is full of mysteries, marvels and strangeness, and this book is a comprehensive guide to them all. Here you will encounter magic, witchcraft, folklore and superstitions; contemporary urban legends; gargoyles and graveyards; graverobbers and murderers; stone circles and prehistoric burial sites; UFOs and freak weather; and tales of horror, madness, humour – and dangerous porridge. Many forgotten aspects of the city’s strange history are here, from the disturbing (spontaneous human combustion, William Wallace’s dismembered limbs, the man who died of fright after a mock execution, and the bodysnatching professors) to the downright bizarre (a talking statue, a wedding celebration which was mistaken for an alien invasion fleet, and golf with giant skulls). The Guide to Mysterious Aberdeen is the tenth in Geoff Holder’s acclaimed series. As with the previous volumes, it is profusely illustrated with over 100 photographs and draws on both ancient and modern sources. Full access and location details are given for both driver and walker alike, making this the indispensable companion for anyone exploring the Granite City.

This is a rich and colourful story, vividly told, and peopled with many fascinating characters and stories. Written by the College’s administrator, who saw how the personalities of teachers and students alike shone through the formal language of minute books and other records, College Voices relates how the College grew and evolved alongside the history not only of Scotland but of the world. It demonstrates the effects on ministerial training of two world wars, and is honest about times when the College was threatened by closure and scandal.
