Book excerpt: Endorsed in its time by Francis Scott Key, John Jay, and Theodore Roosevelt, the American Bible Society (ABS) is a seminal institution for American Protestants. The group was founded in 1816 with the goal of distributing free copies of the Bible in local languages throughout the world. Today, the ABS is a Christian ministry based in Philadelphia with a $300 million endowment and a mission to engage 100 million Americans with the Bible by 2025. In The Bible Cause, noted historian of American religion John Fea demonstrates how the ABS's primary mission - to place the Bible in the hands of as many people as possible - has caused the history of the organization to intersect at nearly every point with the history of the United States. For the last two hundred years, the ABS has steadily increased its influence both at home and abroad, working with all Christian denominations in the US and internationally, aligning itself whenever possible with the gatekeepers of American religious culture. Over the years ABS Bibles could be found in hotel rooms, bookstores, and airports; on steam boats, college and university campuses; the Internet; and even behind the Iron Curtain. Its agents, Bibles in hand, could be found on the front lines of every American military conflict from the Mexican-American War to the Iraq War. However and wherever the United States developed, the ABS was there. Throughout the last two centuries ABS has never wavered in its mission, and its commitment to be the guardian of a Christian civilization has been proven many times over.

This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the New York Bible Society, From Its Origin in 1823 to the Present Time It was originally intended to form an appendix to the thirty fourth Annual Report, but, although condensed in its details as closely as seemed at all compatible with tolerable clearness of statement, it unavoidably grew to such a length as to preclude its publication with the report. The Printing and Publishing Committee of the Board, to whose judgment, in connection with some additional members pro tem., the matter and mode of publication was referred, by their Chairman, 0. A. Davison, Esq., recommended that it be issued in the form in which it is now presented; as calculated not only to interest the numerous friends of the society, but also to form in some sense a manual of information, particularly for new members of the board, who, under the peculiar limitations of the 6th article of the constitution, come in annually, and not unfrequently constitute a pretty large proportion of the whole number of managers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Bible Society: From Its Organization to the Present Time The necessity of some such work as the following was suggested to the mind of the author when he entered upon his duties as agent of the American Bible Society several years since. He found the field of labor in which he had engaged one concerning the nature of which he knew but little. To obtain such information as would qualify him for his work, it therefore became necessary for him to study the policy and operations of the society, as contained in the printed reports, circulars, and letters of instruction issued from the Board from time to time, and embracing a period of many years. He found that, to give a full and intelligible answer in regard to almost any important topic connected with the society, the whole field of its operations must be searched, and the scattered fragments lying here and there must be gathered up and arranged. In the preparation of each of the thirty-nine chapters, with but few exceptions, the writer has traveled over the entire ground every time, collecting from the reports and collateral documents every important fact connected therewith.
