Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 2: Biographical Mr. Kepler was born in Litchfield, Illinois, March 23, 1872, the only son of Andrew and Frances Kepler, whose family also numbered a daughter, Grace. The parents were early residents of Illinois and the mother died when her son was but six years of age. The father was a harness-maker of Litchfield but for two years prior to his death was an invalid. When only eight years of age Eugene Kepler sold sandwiches and newspapers at the trains in order to get money for the needs of the family. He early learned the value of industry, perseverance and honesty and these qualities dominated his entire business career. When a youth of fourteen he went to Springfield, Illinois, where he pursued a busi ness course, and at the same time he held a position in a shoe store of that city, being employed as a clerk at a weekly wage of fifteen dollars. While thus working he attracted the attention of a Mr. Burns, a shoe dealer of Peoria, Illinois, who offered him employ ment and brought him to this city in 1891. Something of his cap ability and his dependability is shown in the fact that after six months he was made manager of the store. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Illinois River Valley, Vol. 1 Few regions of like size in our country exhibit more unique features than does the Valley of the Illinois. In glacial times it was the outlet to the Gulf of Mexico for the run-off from the great ice sheets covering Canada, the Great Lakes, and north central states. In this era it received many of its present day physical features. Before Lake Erie found its egress to Lake Ontario over the Niagara Falls, the waters of the Great Lakes ran down through the Illinois Valley to the Gulf. Moreover, in that far off glacial period, the upper Mississippi and Rock rivers joined near the site of the city of Dixon and thence flowed southward to meet the Illinois near the present location of Hennepin. These forces have given the valley rather the character of a sluggish lake than a typical river bed, of normal fall. From Peru to the Mississippi, the Illinois shows only one and one-half inch of fall per mile. Before the white man came, the valley's luxurious prairies abounded in all kinds of game and were a region much sought after by the Indian tribes. Here were fought some of the most momentous Indian wars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Oxford Handbook of American Economic History Volume 2

This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American economic history describes the transition of a handful of struggling settlements on the Atlantic seaboard into the nation with the most successful economy in the world today. As the economy has developed, so have the methods used by economic historians to analyze the process. Interest in economic history has sharply increased in recent years among the public, policy-makers, and in the academy. The current economic turmoil, calling forth comparisons with the Great Depression of the 1930s, is in part responsible for the surge in interest among the public and in policy circles. It has also stimulated greater scholarly research into past financial crises, the multiplier effects of fiscal and monetary policy, the dynamics of the housing market, and international economic cooperation and conflict. Other pressing policy issues--including the impending retirement of the Baby-Boom generation, the ongoing expansion of the healthcare sector, and the environmental challenges imposed by global climate change--have further increased demand for the long-run perspective given by economic history. Confronting this need, The Oxford Handbook of American Economic History affords access to the latest research on the crucial events, themes, and legacies of America's economic history--from colonial America, to the Civil War,up to present day. More than fifty contributors address topics as wide-ranging as immigration, agriculture, and urbanization. Over its two volumes, this handbook gives readers not only a comprhensive look at where the field of American economic history currently stands but where it is headed in the years to come.

Book The Worlds the Shawnees Made

Download or read book The Worlds the Shawnees Made written by Stephen Warren and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1779, Shawnees from Chillicothe, a community in the Ohio country, told the British, "We have always been the frontier." Their statement challenges an oft-held belief that American Indians derive their unique identities from longstanding ties to native lands. By tracking Shawnee people and migrations from 1400 to 1754, Stephen Warren illustrates how Shawnees made a life for themselves at the crossroads of empires and competing tribes, embracing mobility and often moving willingly toward violent borderlands. By the middle of the eighteenth century, the Shawnees ranged over the eastern half of North America and used their knowledge to foster notions of pan-Indian identity that shaped relations between Native Americans and settlers in the revolutionary era and beyond. Warren's deft analysis makes clear that Shawnees were not anomalous among Native peoples east of the Mississippi. Through migration, they and their neighbors adapted to disease, warfare, and dislocation by interacting with colonizers as slavers, mercenaries, guides, and traders. These adaptations enabled them to preserve their cultural identities and resist coalescence without forsaking their linguistic and religious traditions.
