Book A Crusade of Brotherhood

Download or read book A Crusade of Brotherhood written by Augustus Field Beard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Crusade of Brotherhood: A History of the American Missionary Association The significant facts of the American Missionary Association history are scattered here and there in our American Missionary magazine through sixty volumes. I have quoted freely what has seemed to me to be useful for correct appreciation of passing events, and have endeavored to exclude all else. My purpose has been to entrench these facts in the reasons of the great movements for which they stand; to show something of the evolutionary processes by which they came to be, and to take on their distinctive characteristics. I have endeavored to keep close to the principles and policies which appear in our various records, and not to advance personal theories of my own. The concrete facts and figures which are repetitiously - and necessarily repetitiously - set forth in our magazine, The American Missionary, from month to month through sixty years have seemed to me to be the less important part of the story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the American Missionary Association: Its Constitution and Principles, &C., &C At the Circuit Court, Sept. 18th, Judge Thompson instructed the grand jury that the courts of the United States have no jurisdiction in the case, as the ofl'ense (if it was an offense) was committed on board a Spanish vessel. A vessel sailing under the colors of any country (said he), is considered as a part of that country. This is just as if the offense was com mitted on land - on the island of Cuba; and our courts have no more jurisdiction in the one case than the other. Judge T. Stated that if the offense had been against the law of nations, the Court could have juris diction; but the killing of the captain of the Amistad was not a crime against the law of nations. Were the crime piracy, even, it would not be a crime against the law of nations, connected as it is with the slave trade.
