Book St Laurence the Holy Grail

Download or read book St Laurence the Holy Grail written by Janice Bennett and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars are convinced that The Holy Chalice of Valencia is the Holy Grail, celebrated in medieval legends as it was venerated by monks in the secluded Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, built into a rocky outcropping of the Spanish Pyrenees. The tradition of Aragón has always insisted that the flaming agate cup of the Holy Chalice was sent to Spain by St. Laurence, the glorious Spaniard martyred on a gridiron during the Valerian persecution in Rome in 258 AD. Now there is new evidence: A sixth-century manuscript written in Latin by St. Donato, an Augustinian monk who founded a monastery in the area of Valencia, provides never-before-published details about Laurence, born in Valencia but destined for Italy, where he became treasurer and deacon of the Catholic Church under Pope Sixtus II. It explicitly mentions the details surrounding the transfer of the Holy Cup of the Last Supper to Spain. Janice Bennett acquaints the reader with the enthralling story of the Holy Chalice, the renowned relic that embarked from the Last Supper on an amazing pilgrimage that providentially ended in the Cathedral of Valencia, a miraculous odyssey that has been characterized by danger, greed, martyrdom and fire. It is a fascinating and captivating account that will dispel forever the erroneous notion that the famous relic was ever lost. The mythical Quest for the Holy Grail is now over. Includes 20 pages of color illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Lawrence Feast Day: August 10\sBorn (approximately) 225 - Died 258 This great martyr of Rome lived in the second century. He was one of seven deacons who were in charge of delivering relief to the impoverished and the needy. Then tremendous commotion erupted and the troublemakers who did not like Christians planned to murder Pope St.Sixtus II. As they brought the Pope away for death (to chop off his head), Lawrence followed him crying. "Father, where are you leaving without your deacon?" The Pope answered, "I am not abandoning you, my son, in three days you will accompany me." Full of delight, Lawrence donated to the impoverished the balance of the money he had with him. He even sold valuable church vessels so he would have more money to give away. The prefect of Rome, a greedy man, felt the Church had a large sum stashed away. He instructed Lawrence to deliver the Church's riches to him. The saint said he would, in three days. Then Jesus proceeded around the city and brought together all the destitute and ill people sponsored by the Church. He introduced them to the prefect and said: "These folks are the Church's treasure." The prefect was outraged. In his wrath he instructed them to murder Lawrence slowly so he would suffer more. The saint was bound on top of an iron grill over a slow fire that cooked him. God gave him so much courage and pleasure that Lawrence joked with the court saying "Turn me over". Before he died, he prayed that the city of Rome could be turned to Jesus. He hoped that the Catholic religion would spread all throughout the globe.

Book excerpt: The annual Lenten pilgrimage to dozens of Rome’s most striking churches is a sacred tradition dating back almost two millennia, to the earliest days of Christianity. Along this historic spiritual pathway, today’s pilgrims confront the mysteries of the Christian faith through a program of biblical and early Christian readings amplified by some of the greatest art and architecture of western civilization. In Roman Pilgrimage, bestselling theologian and papal biographer George Weigel, art historian Elizabeth Lev, and photographer Stephen Weigel lead readers through this unique religious and aesthetic journey with magnificent photographs and revealing commentaries on the pilgrimage’s liturgies, art, and architecture. Through reflections on each day’s readings about faith and doubt, heroism and weakness, self-examination and conversion, sin and grace, Rome’s familiar sites take on a new resonance. And along that same historical path, typically unexplored treasures—artifacts of ancient history and hidden artistic wonders—appear in their original luster, revealing new dimensions of one of the world’s most intriguing and multi-layered cities. A compelling guide to the Eternal City, the Lenten Season, and the itinerary of conversion that is Christian life throughout the year, Roman Pilgrimage reminds readers that the imitation of Christ through faith, hope, and love is the template of all true discipleship, as the exquisite beauty of the Roman station churches invites reflection on the deepest truths of Christianity.

Book excerpt: The lives of the saints are a great source of inspiration and reassurance for us. The holy women in Saintly Moms can help us better to understand motherhood as a vocation, just like any other calling from God, and a path to holiness. Whether you’re a new mom, a grandmother, or somewhere in between, this book will encourage all mothers in their vocation as they identify themselves in the lives of these saints, who also experienced the joys and challenges of being a mom. Their stories will also be inspiring to young women exploring the vocation of motherhood and anyone with an interest in saints who were mothers. Each chapter profiles a different holy mother, reflects on a lesson learned in her life, and ends with a prayer through her intercession. While we grow in admiration and devotion to them, these Saintly Moms can help us see the saintly possibilities each one of us possesses. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kelly Ann Guest is a youth minister, contributing blogger at CatholicMom.com, and contributing author for The Catholic Mom’s Prayer Companion.
