Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. The cause which he laboured to advance was, however, much more effectually strengthened a few years afterwards by the bestowal of temporal dominion upon the popes. Pepin, mayor of the palace to the king of France, Affairs of Childeric the Third, had long possessed the power, and eagerly desired the title, of royalty. He convened the states of the realm, and proposed that the imbecile Childeric should be dethroned, and that he himself should be elected his successor, if spiritual authority would sanction the design. Ambassadors were accordingly sent to Zachary, bishop of Rome, to enquire whether the law of God would permit the dethronement of a weak and indolent king, and the election of a successor more worthy of the throne? The reply of Zachary was favourable to the interest of Pepin; and the newly-elected monarch shortly afterwards embraced an opportunity of manifesting his gratitude to the papal see. When, in the year 753, the Lombards took possession of those Italian provinces included under the general title of the " Exarchate of Ravenna," and projected the subjugation of the entire peninsula, Stephen II., the successor of Zachary, applied to the court of France for protection and assistance1. Pepin hastened to comply with the request of the pontiff. He crossed the Alps at the beginning of the following year, recovered the provinces from the Lombardic invaders, and then, desirous of testify ing still further his obligations to the chair of St. Peter, transferred to its occupants sovereignty over the entire ExarchateTM....

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Years of Christianity: A Comprehensive History, of the First Three Centuries of the Christian Church This Volume, like the preceding, has been specially prepared for the English Edition. Divided into three sections, it yet forms one whole, for its one theme is the great conflict of Primitive Christianity with Paganism. The first section gives the narrative of the missions and persecutions of the Church; the second treats of its most illustrious representatives, and brings out their distinctive characteristics; it is entitled "The Fathers of the Church of the Second and Third Centuries." The third section describes the great controversial conflict of Christianity, and contains a complete outline of the Apology of the Early Church. The Volume which is to follow will have for its subject Heresy and the Faith; and the work will conclude with the exposition of the religious and ecclesiastical life of that age of fervour and of freedom. The Author has spared no labour over this book, and has uniformly derived his statements from the original sources. He esteems it an honour to see his work presented to the religious public in an English translation executed with so much care and ability.
