Book History of the Arguments for the Existence of God Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Arguments for the Existence of God Classic Reprint written by Aaron Hahn and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Arguments for the Existence of God This book, a portion of which was published in the American Israelite in 1883, is intended to show the efforts that the human mind has made to solve the great problem of the Divine existence. It is safe to say - and were it for no other reason but because Atheism can never succeed in proving the impossibility of the existence of God - the attempts to argue the Divine existence will be renewed and continued in every generation, no matter how much there will be said or written against it. It has been often maintained that the triumphs of natural sciences in our century have shaken the foundation of all proofs of the Divine existence. That is not so: just the reverse has been accomplished by the scientifically proved idea of the "Unity of Nature." This idea, which means that the laws of nature arc all-embracing, that the most distant planets have some of the same kind of minerals that the earth contains, and that heat, light, electricity, magnetism and chemical affinity - this pentarchy of physical force - are so intricately related that they can be converted into one another, implies the ideas of the five main arguments for the existence of God. Book 36 Arguments for the Existence of God

Download or read book 36 Arguments for the Existence of God written by Rebecca Goldstein and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Mind-Body Problem: a witty and intoxicating novel of ideas that plunges into the great debate between faith and reason. At the center is Cass Seltzer, a professor of psychology whose book, The Varieties of Religious Illusion, has become a surprise best seller. Dubbed “the atheist with a soul,” he wins over the stunning Lucinda Mandelbaum—“the goddess of game theory.” But he is haunted by reminders of two people who ignited his passion to understand religion: his teacher Jonas Elijah Klapper, a renowned literary scholar with a suspicious obsession with messianism, and an angelic six-year-old mathematical genius, heir to the leadership of an exotic Hasidic sect. Hilarious, heartbreaking, and intellectually captivating, 36 Arguments explores the rapture and torments of religious experience in all its variety.

Book A Plain Argument for God Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Plain Argument for God Classic Reprint written by George Stuart Fullerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Argument for God I have long been of the opinion that the argument for God, as it is usually pre sented, gives but little satisfaction to the vast mass of thoughtful men and women who approach the subject with an earnest desire to satisfy not only the demands of the intellect but also of the heart. The language used is so far removed from that of common life as to be not readily intelli gible. Some of the arguments put forward seem to the plain man little better than metaphysical quibbles, and if he assents to them it is rather because he already agrees with their conclusion than because he sees their force. The one argument which does appeal to him as simple and natural is pre sented in such a way as to lead him to a God, not present and living, but of the past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of God The idea of God is so variously defined that we make bold to say that every single individual has a conception of his own. There are no two alike, and the idea of God among different persons is indic ative of their character, for every man creates his God in his own image. There was a brave officer in the Austrian army nu der Prince Eugene. When once in his presence the problem of God's existence was discussed, he clapped his hand on his sword and said: Gentlemen, I stand up for God with my sword, I challenge whoever denies him and, so help me God, I'll conquer him. I hope that God will stand up for me, too, on the day of judg ment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Apologetics of Joy written by Joe Puckett and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all the arguments for the existence of God there may be none more personal and intimate than C. S. Lewis's Argument from Desire. This book attempts to explain what the Argument from Desire is and why we believe that the argument is an inductively strong one. In the spirit of C. S. Lewis, Augustine, and Pascal, this book invites both the head and the heart of the reader to consider the case for God's existence. While many arguments look out to the external world for evidence of God's existence, this book calls the reader to look inward to the human heart. While learning from classical thinkers (particularly C. S. Lewis) the Argument from Desire will bring both intuition and experience together to demonstrate the truth of divine presence in the world. The reader will walk away with either a newfound faith or a reinforced conviction that has a strong intellectual and experiential dimension.

Book Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Philosophy of Religion written by Tim Bayne and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the philosophy of religion? How can we distinguish it from theology on the one hand and the psychology/sociology of religious belief on the other? What does it mean to describe God as eternal? And should religious people want there to be good arguments for the existence of God, or is religious belief only authentic in the absence of these good arguments? In this Very Short Introduction Tim Bayne introduces the field of philosophy of religion, and engages with some of the most burning questions that philosophers discuss. Considering how religion should be defined, and whether we even need to be able to define it in order to engage in the philosophy of religion, he goes on to discuss whether the existence of God matters. Exploring the problem of evil, Bayne also debates the connection between faith and reason, and the related question of what role reason should play in religious contexts. Shedding light on the relationship between science and religion, Bayne finishes by considering the topics of reincarnation and the afterlife. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of God: Historical, Critical Constructive We do not arbitrarily go in search of our theme as if it were a matter of caprice to select this instead of some other equally indifferent subject. Vast fundamental changes in every branch of science - in physics, biology, history and psychology, the powerful impact of present day systems of thought, as Radical Empiricism and the New Realism, and not least the clothing of this idea in appealing literary form, free from every dogmatic fetter, - all of these present fresh problems and make impera tive a re-interpretation of the meaning of God in human experience. This work aims at such a presentation of the idea of God as will enable it to function anew in the life of to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this tour of the history of arguments for and against the existence of God, Nathan Schneider embarks on a remarkable intellectual, historical, and theological journey through the centuries of believers and unbelieversÑfrom ancient Greeks, to medieval Arabs, to todayÕs most eminent philosophers and the New Atheists. Framed by an account of SchneiderÕs own unique journey, God in Proof illuminates the great minds who wrestled with one of historyÕs biggest questions together with their arguments, bringing them to life in their time, and our own. SchneiderÕs sure-handed portrayal of the characters and ideas involved in the search for proof challenges how we normally think about doubt and faith while showing that, in their quest for certainty and the proofs to declare it, thinkers on either side of the God divide are often closer to one another than they would like to think.

Book Natural Signs and Knowledge of God

Download or read book Natural Signs and Knowledge of God written by C. Stephen Evans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there such a thing as natural knowledge of God? C. Stephen Evans presents the case for understanding theistic arguments as expressions of natural signs in order to gain a new perspective both on their strengths and weaknesses. Three classical, much-discussed theistic arguments - cosmological, teleological, and moral - are examined for the natural signs they embody. At the heart of this book lie several relatively simple ideas. One is that if there is a God of the kind accepted by Christians, Jews, and Muslims, then it is likely that a 'natural' knowledge of God is possible. Another is that this knowledge will have two characteristics: it will be both widely available to humans and yet easy to resist. If these principles are right, a new perspective on many of the classical arguments for God's existence becomes possible. We understand why these arguments have for many people a continued appeal but also why they do not constitute conclusive 'proofs' that settle the debate once and for all. Touching on the interplay between these ideas and contemporary scientific theories about the origins of religious belief, particularly the role of natural selection in predisposing humans to form beliefs in God or gods, Evans concludes that these scientific accounts of religious belief are fully consistent, even supportive, of the truth of religious convictions.

Book excerpt: Stating the idea that the idea' and 'reality' of God were the same, Anselm of Bec provoked enormous controversy through his radical approach: rather than appealing to the Bible, church authority or the physical senses, Anselm employed the faculties of his mind to craft a method of logic that paved the way for modern thought. Larry Witham traces humans' modern conceptions of faith and reason back to Anselm's formidable claim. In an attempt to 'prove God', Anselm unleashed a raging medieval debate and this history, biography and philosophy further examines his statements.'

Unless we are Convinced that in the last resort the power behind the Universe is on the side of righteousness, the mainspring of endeavour is broken, the lamp of h0pe is almost quenched. But during the last hundred years or so there have been not a few to whom it has appeared that the discoveries of modern science have made the existence of God an unnecessary hypothesis. There are many more to whom the experience of the war has made it an incredible one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
