Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of New Zealand, Vol. 1 At one time it was hoped that several persons of great ability and high character, who had amassed much recorded information and had lived long in New Zealand, would combine the results and give them to the world. But that hope has vanished. I learned from one of them, who went to New Zealand in 1839, and lives there now, that on the occasion of a visit to Europe he abandoned the idea of publication, and destroyed his manuscripts. The failure of that project, and encouragement from those concerned in it, embolden me to present the following narrative compiled with a diligent endeavour to test every statement by reference to the most authentic sources of information. Book Historical Records of New Zealand Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Records of New Zealand Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Robert McNab and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Records of New Zealand, Vol. 1 The adoption of this course serves a double purpose. In the first place, it enhances the value of the History, for it enables the reader to turn at any point from the narrative of the writer to the fuller information which the reports and despatches supply. The advantage gained by this treatment of the official papers is obvious. N O matter how faithfully a writer of history may perform his task, he cannot cover all the ground no matter how acutely he may criticize the actors who take. Part in the scenes he describes, he cannot exhibit them in so clear a light as they are shown in their own writings. Thus the publication of the Records may be regarded as desirable from the historical point of view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Zealand and Its Colonization, Vol. 1 Missionary but the pioneer of the destruction of its heathen people? Is a problem still waiting its solution in New Zealand. On what principle, with reference to native rights, have these Islands been erected into a British Colony? And what are the obligations contracted by the Crown of England in subjecting them to British rule? To what extent have the native race adopted the habits and usages of civilized life? And what pro gress has been made by them in industrial pur suits? What is the prospect of their permanent preservation? And what means have been taken for saving them from that process of exter mination under which uncivilized tribes have too commonly disappeared when brought into contact with civilized men? To these, and questions such as these, the following pages will be found to contain a faithful answer. Contemporary events, however, are seldom rightly discerned or fully appreciated, even' by their principal actors; but when the subject shall have become a matter of History, the Colonization of these Islands and the commingling of the Races will be read with all the interest of romance. Book The New Zealand Wars Vol 1

Download or read book The New Zealand Wars Vol 1 written by James Cowan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Zealand Wars, Vol. 1: A History of the Maori Campaigns and the Pioneering Period; 1845-1864 HE increasing interest in the study of New Zealand's past emphasizes the need for a history of the wars with the Maoris since the establishment of British sovereignty and of the era of pioneering settlement and adventure, which was prao tically conterminous with those campaigns. Although there is in existence a considerable body of war-time literature written by participants in the conflicts, it is not possible to gather in any of the works on the subject a connected account of the successive outbreaks and campaigns which troubled the colony from 1845 to the beginning of 1872. Most of the printed narratives deal chiefly with events which came within the soldier-writers' own experi ence, and'other contributions to the story of the campaigns are scarcely written in the impartial spirit of the historian. Some of the earlier works, and even the blue-books, contain many state ments which careful inquiries and a better understanding of the Maori side of the struggle have now demolished. Most of the useful books, moreover, are out of print, and the student who Wishes to make a complete. Survey of the field of contact between pukeha and Maori is compelled to work through many volumes, pamphlets, and newspaper-hles in the public libraries. The fragmentary and scattered nature of our war-time literature therefore necessitates this endeavour to provide a standard history in convenient compass.
