Book excerpt: The territory that was to become the township of New Salem was roamed over by the clans of the Nipents or Nipmuck Indians who ranged from Northfield to Springfield. They had no fixed village but roved a large territory. Tradition and history tell us that our Bears' Den was one place where they gathered, and that King Philip in the summer of 1675 held a council of war with neighboring chiefs, the result being the attack upon old Deerfield, which was known as the Bloody Brook massacre. The township which was to be New Salem was first granted to Joseph Andrews and others of Salem in 1729, but they failed to meet the requirements, so on December 31, 1734, the general court granted to Daniel Epes, Benjamin Brown and others, living in Salem, a grant for a township equal to six miles square and later another grant of four thousand acres. On August 20, 1735 the proprietors were organized and located the township that was to be New Salem.

Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics–-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ’s Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. Marginalized as a class, white trash have always been at or near the center of major political debates over the character of the American identity. We acknowledge racial injustice as an ugly stain on our nation’s history. With Isenberg’s landmark book, we will have to face the truth about the enduring, malevolent nature of class as well.
