Book History of Mughal Architecture

Download or read book History of Mughal Architecture written by Prof R Nath and published by . This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being the first volume of R.Nath's monumental 4-volume series: 'HISTORY OF MUGHAL ARCHITECTURE', the present work covers monuments of Babur (A.D. 1526-30) and Humayun (1530-40, 1555), and, stylistic study as it is, includes those which were built in the predecessor style during the early reign (1556-1570) of Akbar. It is thus an enumeration of the style in its formative period. A detailed historical background deals with the Medapata-Gopadri-Agra connection, identifying the sources of the inspirations of this art and establishing its link with the soil on which these medieval relics stand. Every attempt has been made to illustrate the various hypotheses raised in the text and also to provide texts and epigraphs (in Sanskrit and Persian for example) and other relevant evidence therewith.Though based on a lifetime's study, fully documented and detailed, the author does not claim it to be the last word on the subject; on the other hand, this is a beginning. The second volume, dealing with the Personality Architecture of the classical age of Akbar, e.g. the Mughal monuments of Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, will appear in due course.

This book was released on 1982 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Volume Of The Author S 5-Vol Series History Of Mughal Architecture Studies Such Aspects Of The Architecture Of Jehangir S Age (1605-27 A.D.) As Public Works (Roads-And-Sarais), Gardens And Garden-Pavilions, Palatial Mansions And Shikargahs, Picture Wall Of Lahore Fort And Tombs, Each In A Separate Chapter. It Covers 43 Monuments, Extending From Kabul To Allahabad, And Kashmir To Burhanpur, And The Scope Of This Volume Is Much Wider Than The Earlier Ones. That Public Works As Roads, Kos-Minars, Bridges, Sarais, Wells, Baolis And Porters Walls Were Built And Maintained At Government Expense Testifies That The; Mughal State Was Fully Alive To The Welfare Of Its Subjects. Four Masonry Bridges Have Been Specifically Studied. Jehangir Was Greatly Interested In Gardens, And Garden-Craft Received A Distinct Form Under His Patronage. Palaces Were Built Amidst Gardens, Mostly On The Riverbank, With Characteristic Idioms Of The Age. A Unique Building Complex, Which Developed Under Him, Was Shikargah (Hunting Lodge) And Four Representative Examples Have Been Studied. The Glazed-Tiled Picture Wall Of The Lahore Fort Is Unique In Respect Of Its Scale, Scheme And Subjects. Originally, It Covered An Immense Mural Area 500 Yards In Length And 16 Yards In Height, By An Ingenious System Of Panelling Which, Besides Stylized Florals, Arabesques And Geometricals, Depicted Beautiful Figurative Compositions. Architect, Potter, Painter And Glazed-Tiler Collaborated On This Grand Project Which Has No Parallel In The World.Domeless Tomb With A Barahdari With Chaukhandi Roof Or A Plain Chabutarah Was Also A Unique Growth Of This Age And The Most Notable Tombs Of This Class, As Those Of Akbar, I Timad-Ud-Daulah And Jehangir, Have Been Studied In Detail. Development Of Such Distinctive Architectural Features As Dado , Gateway And Minar Also Belongs To This Period, During Which Unprecedented Emphasis Was Given On Ornamentation, Which Is Why This Art-Epoch Is Noted For Colour And Design . This Study Has Been Made In The Context Of, And With Reference To, The Cultural Milieu Which Produced It And This Is Not Only A History Of Jehangir S Architecture But Also A History Of Jehangir S Age And History Of Jehangir S India. It Is A History Of Those Tender Feelings, Sublime Thoughts And Subtle Ideas Which Go To Make A Civilization, Not Of Those Political Intrigues And Feuds, And Military Conflicts Which Destroy It.

Book Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri

Download or read book Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri written by Prof R Nath and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entitled as it is, this is devoted to the study of the Architecture of Fatehpur Sikri, the township of Akbar, the Great, and its forms, techniques and concepts. The first chapter deals with Babur's Jal-Mahal which has been identified for the first time. The second chapter is on the formative process whereby a cosmopolitan style is formed by the assimilation of disparate building traditions, in respect of Mughal Architecture (which was, originally, a part of the paper for the XXVI International Congress of the History of Art, Washington D.C. 11-18 August 1986).The third chapter studies architecture of Fatehpur Sikri in respect of the sources and determinants of its forms; its town-planning; plan and design of its buildings; and façade and superstructure (in its original form, it was read in the International Symposium on Fatehpur Sikri held at the Harvard University Cambridge Massachusetts, U.S.A. on 17-19 October 1985).Such distinctive features of its architecture as 'khaprel' roof, 'chhappar' and 'ladāo' ceilings, 'tibārā' 'duchhattī' and 'jālī' have been studied in separate chapters, in full details, in order to elucidate their significance in the formation of this style. The Hiran-Mīnār and the Panch-Mahal, two representative buildings of Fatehpur Sikri, have similarly been studied in separate chapters, the former in respect of its Meaning and Purpose, and the latter in respect of its Architectural Derivation and Raison d'etre. The problem of 'nomenclature' of medieval monuments which has largely confused their history, has been discussed in the chapter on 'Todarmal's Bārahdarī', which too bears this misnomer a little too heavily, and attempt has been made to identify it architecturally. An introductory chapter on Masons'-Marks has also been given.Amazingly, there is nothing experimental, and Fatehpur Sikri's is a fully developed, 16th century A.D., Native Style of India, with minimal true-arched, true-vaulted and true-domed forms! It is, essentially, STONE-WORK, and even large ceilings have been built, in a wide variety with stone beams-and-slabs, stone ribs-and-panels and stone brackets-chhajjā -an h ols. Its art is a faithful reflection of Akbar's personality, in the right earnest, and his reign (1556-1605 A.D.), which is the most important phase of the Medieval period, cannot be historically comprehensive without study of Fatehpur Sikri.

Book Mughal Architecture

Download or read book Mughal Architecture written by Moritz Herrmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Art - Architecture / History of Construction, grade: 1,3, Manipal University (Manipal Institute of Communication), course: Cultural History of India, language: English, abstract: Although India can refer to a proud and very multifaceted history of architecture - with the likes of early and later Hindu and Buddhist temples, Muslim mosques and palaces, and to some degree even the achievements of colonial architecture - the creations of the Mughals probably outshine them all - not least because one of their finest pieces of art ranks amongst the seven world-wonders. The following essay will give an overview over Mughal architecture and hopefully help understanding the ideas behind it. In the very beginning, it explains the origins of the Mughal dynasty. It focuses in further detail on the four emperors Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb, for they are considered the most important forces in terms of changing the landscape of Mughal India. The resume will provide some overall thoughts and the results of the analysis of the emperors' different styles in (urban) planning, building, decorating and patronizing.
