Book excerpt: The Morris County community of Montville covers a nine-milelong area bounded by the Rockaway River to the west and the Passaic River to the east. Montville Township was formed in 1867 from land set off from Pequannock Township, and incorporates the hamlets of Pine Book and Towaco (formerly known as White Hall). Set within the foothills of the Hook Mountains, the area has always been known for its plentiful, clear springs, deposits of limestone and iron ore, and fertile soil. Long traversed by the Lenni Lenape people, it drew Dutch patentees to hide-trapping, tanning, and eventually farming. During the Revolutionary War, General Washington frequented the Doremus House in the northwestern part of Montville. The Morris Canal, built between 1824 and 1831, provided an inland waterway to transport coal west from Pennsylvania across New Jersey to the Hudson River. Montville celebrates this community's long and multifaceted history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Fabulous Fable of the Supernatural Kind The saga of the Morristown ghost has been told around campfires and dinner tables in Morris County for generations. Local legend claimed British Loyalists secretly buried stolen Patriot treasure on Schooley Mountain as they fled the oncoming forces of George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Years later in 1788, a former school teacher from Connecticut, Ransford Rodgers, convinced local prominent Morristown families that a ghost was protecting the true location of the treasure and he alone could exercise it. Little did the victims know, Rodgers was perpetuating an elaborate hoax and eventually extorted large sums of money from the embarrassed local elite. The tale has been recounted in various sensational pamphlets and publications ever since, leaving behind a mystery of what is true or myth. Author Peter Zablocki separates fact from fiction in the story of the great Morristown ghost hoax.

Book Chronology of the American Revolution

Download or read book Chronology of the American Revolution written by Bud Hannings and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Battle of Lexington and Concord on 19 April, 1775, up through the reduction of the victorious Continental Army to a single regiment in January 1784, this book is a day-to-day chronicle of the American Revolution, both on the battlefield and in the halls of the Continental Congress. Covered in detail are the movements of not only the Continental Army and Navy, but the Marines--not covered comprehensively in other sources--and the militia. Information on the actions of Congress highlights each day's business, including the resolutions pertinent to the war. Drawing on such vital primary documents as the Journals of the Continental Congress and the Diplomatic Correspondence of the American Revolution, the book offers a close-up view of the political and military tension of the time, the perilous situation of the colonists, and the concerns of the soldiers and sailors immersed in battle. It also provides insight into the moves and counter-moves of British and American forces as intelligence flowed in both directions to influence the course of combat. All military campaigns of the revolution, from Canada to Florida and Louisiana, are included. The result is unmatched coverage of the battles, both military and legislative, that gave birth to America.
