Book History of Greece Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Greece Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Evelyn Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 1 Though we can add nothing to the existing records of Greek History, the estimate placed upon their value, and the conclusions drawn from them are constantly changing, and for this reason the story which has been told so often will be told anew from time to time, so long as it continues to have an interest for mankind - that is, let us hope, so long as mankind continue to exist. The present work is intended for readers who are acquainted with the outlines of the subject, and have some knowledge of the Greek language. It has been written in the belief that an intelligible sketch of Greek civilisation may be given within' a brief compass - not with the h0pe of throwing new light on 01d obscurities, or quoting fresh evidence where all the evidence has been long ago collected. There are no castes. The nobles are those who are the strongest and most active, the bravest, the most eloquent. It is because they possess these qualities that they are regarded as sons of the gods and receive respect and obedience. But any man may claim this origin if he can prove it by his valor. Between the people and the nobles there is no insurmountable barrier; no man may live slothfully upon any ancestral fame. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 7 of 8 After the conquest of the Bactrian satrapy, there remained only one province of the Persian empire into' which Alexander had not yet carried his arms: it was that which tempted his curiosity, as well as his ambiw tion, perhaps more than any other. Already, indeed, before he crossed the Paropamisus, he had made himself master of a great part of the country which the Per s1ans called India, and perhaps had very nearly reached the utmost limits within which the authority of the Great King was acknowledged in the latter years of the monarchy. But the power of the first Darius had cer tainly been extended much further eastward. It seems probable that a part of his Indian tribute was collected in the Pendj ab, and there is some reason to believe that it was on the Hydaspes Scylax began his voyage of discovery.1 After the death of Darius, the attention of the Persian kings was so much turned toward the west, or distracted by wars with their revolted subjects. Grecian History to the Reign of Peistratus at Athens Tm: first idea of this History was conceived many year! My leisure, however, was not at that time equal to the execution of any large literary undertaking nor is it until within the last three or four years that I have been able to devote to the work that continuous and exclusive labor, without which, though much may be done to illustrate detached points, no entire or complicated subject can ever be set forth in a man ner worthy to meet the public eye. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ancient Greece, Vol. 1 of 4: Its Colonies, and Conquests The present History was undertaken, and a considera ble part of it written, many years ago, by the advice of some persons of taste and learning, who, having read my historical introduction to the Orations of Lysias and Iso crates, wished to see the whole series of Grecian story treated on the same plan. My situation, and my leisure, enabled me to meet their Wish; but before my manuscript was prepared for the Press, my studies were interrupted by the only employment, not enjoined by some positive duty, which I should have allowed (such are the sanguine hopes of authors!) to suspend my literary labours. Du ring that long interval, difl'erent portions of Grecian his tory have been ably treated in English, as well as in foreign languages. Yet, as most of those works still remain incomplete, and as none of them embrace the whole extent of my subject, or at all pre occupy my plan. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Period to the End of the Persian War The purely mythical traditions of the Hellenic tribes I have noticed only in so far as they bear on the life and culture of the people. That they are not history, nor quarries out of which we may dig history, I have sought to show in my volumes on the Mythology Of the Aryan Nations and it seemed to me unnecessary to give again a summary of narratives which I had minutely examined elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greece, From the Earliest Times to the End of the Persian War, Vol. 1 Considerations of this kind, which must assert themselves at every stage of all historical work, and with pretty nearly equal force, I have finally decided to disregard. Sufficient care is taken that enquiry and criticism shall proceed from one conclusion to another without cessation of their labour: yet. For the basis of science, each of the two factors is equally indispensable if we need to sift the materials in order to establish the facts, we need also to under stand and think of them in combination. It is the interaction of these two factors which discloses the hidden secret; for not only does the whole exist in and through the parts, but from the whole the parts receive their life and light. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece From the Earliest Times to the Present, Vol. 1 of 2 There remains for me the pleasant duty of tendering my warmest thanks to my friend and associate in the New York School of Languages, Professor Henry C. Miller, to whom I am indebted for many valuable suggestions and criticisms. The difficulties which beset the historian in treating a subject so vast as the fortunes of the Hellenic nation, coupled with the obstacles which a foreigner, however much he may admire the beauty and manliness of English expres sion, must unavoidably meet in conveying his thoughts in a language not his own, may to a certain extent explain the reasons on account of which the author, after years of earnest labor, has fallen short of the lofty ideal he has aimed at the graphic representation of Hellenism from its earliest stage to the present.
