Book The Humanitarian Engagement of the Church in Nigeria

Download or read book The Humanitarian Engagement of the Church in Nigeria written by Emmanuel Ayebome and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human dignity, decent life and human rights are effects of extensive humanitarian struggles by a people to achieve reasonable life for all. The possibility of such El Dorado was stalled in the past by unforeseen circumstances and other man-made tribulations in global history. However, these struggles will remain incomplete without a global perspective. Thus, taking the responsibility to understand humanity and her shortfalls in other parts of the globe becomes necessary. This quest consequently triggers the thorough study on how, where and why their plight is intrinsically tied to their social, cultural, religious and political background. Such genuine consequent studies can uproot the causal effect and thus guarantee the success of that developmental slogan of 'helping people to help themselves.' This study attempts to provide a platform that could chart a path towards sustainable answers to basic social questions.

Book excerpt: Ígálá language, which is spoken in parts of Kògí, Énúgu, Ánámbra, Delta and Bénúé States of Nigeria, is one of the world’s increasingly endangered languages. Unless something changes soon, it will be lost forever. John Idakwoji spent more than thirty years researching the language so that he could share with the world its oceanic depth and the sacred, unique but under-exploited culture that it nurtures even in its seldom written, rarely described and sparsely documented state of being. The book takes the bull by the horns, as it equips Igala teachers and students with the tools they need to engage in practical learning and instruction. You’ll find: insights on the properties and characteristics of the language, including its alphabet, tones, grammar, parts of speech, dialects, loan-words, and more. features of the lexicon and how readers can recognize and use vocabulary. over five thousand head-words presented in alphabetical order and bearing diacritical marks, phonetic symbols, and tone marks to enable interested non-Igalas to read the book. Research-based information on Igala’s prehistoric origins and the three successive dynasties that have ruled the land bring a personal touch to the lexicon. There is a desperate need and a vociferous call for Ígáláà to be preserved, and An Ígálá-English Lexicon answers that clarion call with an impressive trove of data, analysis, and documentation.

It aims to emphasize the religious, economic, political, cultural and social connections between Africa and the rest of the world and features comparisons as well as an interdisciplinary approach in order to examine the place of Africa in global history. "This book makes an important contribution to the discussion on the place of Africa in the world and of the world in Africa. An outstanding work of scholarship, it powerfully demonstrates that Africa is not marginal to global concerns. Its labor and resources have made our world, and the continent deserves our respect." – Mukhtar Umar Bunza, Professor of Social History, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and Commissioner for Higher Education, Kebbi State, Nigeria "This is a deep plunge into the critical place of Africa in global history. The handbook blends a rich set of important tapestries and analysis of the conceptual framework of African diaspora histories, imperialism and globalization. By foregrounding the authentic voices of African interpreters of transnational interactions and exchanges, the Handbook demonstrates a genuine commitment to the promotion of decolonized and indigenous knowledge on African continent and its peoples." – Samuel Oloruntoba, Visiting Research Professor, Institute of African Studies, Carleton University

Book Brokering Colonial Rule

Download or read book Brokering Colonial Rule written by Philip Afeadie and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A group study of African political agents, this work develops the role of the agents as brokers in the British colonial administration of northern Nigeria. African political agents bridged the communication gap between the foreign rulers and the indigenous people, a task only they could perform in colonial administration, owing to their knowledge of the local languages and cultures as well as some English and colonial government conventions. As brokers, political agents controlled communication between the colonial authorities and the indigenous rulers. Agents assisted government diplomacy and helped to establish and maintain relations between the colonial government and the native rulers. Agents gathered information that was needed for policy-making in administration, and many of them would perform administrative duties. In essence, the role of political agents reflects the dynamics of interdependence and power relations in colonial governance and administration in northern Nigeria. Knowledge of agents' activities is important for the academic community including Africanist scholars, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as educated general readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nigeria is a British Creation. The name came from Flora-Shaw; meaning "Niger Area people" or the people around river Niger. The first group of people were Igala, Idoma and the Igbos. They call themselves Agabaidu or Aguatta; meaning "the Lions" in their respective dialects. Attah is the head of the Kingdom while Achadu (Asadu) is the Prime Minister and second in Command to Attah Igala. Attah was regarded as the King of Africa prior to the Colonial era. The first Treaty drafted in 1831 and signed in 1841 was the first in Africa. It was the Attah that ceded Nigeria for British occupation in 1842 at Lokoja. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. The "Nago people" of Brazil, Haiti, Bahamas, Black Americans and Caribeans were Igala people. In this book, the so called "Black people" are not blacks but of "Golden Colour". Under light, we reflect golden colour with dark background. Balkanization of the land into districts and later provinces brought divisions and multi-ethnic diversities. The book revealed that the Igala people of Nigeria are related to Egyptian before Arab invation of Egypt, are also related to Gallas (Oromos) of Ethiopea, who are found in Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and parts of Indian Coast. The Igala people are found in Angola, Congo and West African countries. The book linked the people of Turkey and Yemen to Igalas in Nigeria. The Igala language is spoken by the Yorubas and many West African countries. The book is poised to re-unite.

Book Pathways to Alternative Epistemologies in Africa

Download or read book Pathways to Alternative Epistemologies in Africa written by Adeshina Afolayan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates alternative epistemological pathways by which knowledge production in Africa can proceed. The contributors, using different intellectual dynamics, explore the existing epistemological dominance of the West—from architecture to gender discourse, from environmental management to democratic governance—and offer distinct and unique arguments that challenge the denigration of the different and differing modes of knowing that the West considered “barbaric” and “primitive.” This volume therefore constitutes a minimal gesture that further contributes to the ongoing discourse on alternative modes of knowing in Africa.

Book Fostering Christian Faith in Schools and Christian Communities Through Igbo Traditional Values

Download or read book Fostering Christian Faith in Schools and Christian Communities Through Igbo Traditional Values written by Michael Okoh and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious education in Nigeria is in a state of transformation, owing to the country's current pluralist nature among other factors. In the process, concepts of religion and education are revisited and reassessed in order to make them meaningful to mankind in his pluralist world. With this book, author Michael Okoh inaugurates a fundamental revision. He brings traditional African education and values alongside Christian ideals into dialogue with the "Western progressive learning approaches," paving new ways for religious education activity in Nigeria, particularly in Igboland. Book The Dark Webs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Toyin Falola
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book The Dark Webs written by Toyin Falola and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an intellectual history of colonialism in Africa. The book focuses on ideas espoused by historians and creative writers on various aspects of colonial rule; the sources of the ideas; the vision of a post-colonial society that they created; and a critique of those ideas. Some essays focus on the works of notable scholars such as Ruth First and Ade Ajayi, while some chapters review themes of broad historiographical significance. In the first part of the book, eight scholars provide various examinations of the context to understand the colonial period, with emphasis on the historical linkages between the colonial era and the post-colonial, nationalism, pan-Africanism, new identities, and new agencies of control. The second part analyzes a number of key literary texts, drawing from the writings on apartheid in South Africa, the works of Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, Micere Mugo, and V.Y. Mudimbe. In the third part, seven essays examine the ideas of Kenneth Dike, Betwell Ogot, Adu Boahen, Ruth First, Ade Ajayi, Cheikh Anta Diop, and Robert Mugabe. In all, the book moves us in new directions in the study of colonial Africa. It provides the basis to understand the views of leading African scholars, and offers fresh insights on the nature of colonial power and the African encounter with imperialism. "Well-crafted... Summing Up: Recommended." -- CHOICE Magazine, 2005 "Toyin Falola has created a most remarkable and illuminating volume. This is intellectual history of colonialism in Africa at its very best. It is informative, powerful, prophetic and perhaps most striking of all, lyric. Altogether, Falola has produced a brilliant and timely volume which will contribute greatly to a much-improved understanding of Africa's encounter with colonialism, viewed from the inside-out. Arguably more important, it will serve to point the new generation of students of Africa -- and most importantly African students -- in the directions from which restoration and change must come." -- Journal of African History "Editor of the recently published five-volume Africa series from Carolina Academic Press, two volumes of which directly consider colonialism, Falola has produced a separate work here using new scholarship that takes this difficult topic in challenging directions." -- African Studies Review

Book The Servant of Yahweh in Isaiah 52 13 53 12

Download or read book The Servant of Yahweh in Isaiah 52 13 53 12 written by Theophilus Ugbedeojo Ejeh and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this dissertation presents us with a cultural hermeneutical work. He toes the line of many African Theologians who have, since the 70ties and 80ties, tried to develop a postcolonial and specific African Theology. This work, therefore, which has not only given a historical analysis, but also an African oriented interpretation of the Fourth Servant Song of Isaiah, can be considered to be a successful and important contribution to the self amancipating African Theology of our time.
