Book History of the North Arkansas Baptist Association

Download or read book History of the North Arkansas Baptist Association written by Roger V. Logan and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the North Arkansas Baptist Association: Volume 2 is a chronicling of mission history of the churches and their members, reaching out from their own Jerusalem, located in four counties in northwest Arkansas, to the uttermost part of the world. It follows churches and individuals as they go on mission to meet physical and spiritual needs unmet by a world that is blind to their cries. It contains the life history of fifty-six-plus congregations as they grow in number and spirit, reaching their individuals with the claims of discipleship under Jesus Christ. Pastors, too, are highlighted in the histories of their pilgrimages in the faith. The history is a must-read for every believer, both to give encouragement regarding the past mission advance and to challenge would-be missionaries and the churches that support them.

Book Passionately Human No Less Divine

Download or read book Passionately Human No Less Divine written by Wallace D. Best and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Migration was the most significant event in black life since emancipation and Reconstruction. Passionately Human, No Less Divine analyzes the various ways black southerners transformed African American religion in Chicago during their Great Migration northward. A work of religious, urban, and social history, it is the first book-length analysis of the new religious practices and traditions in Chicago that were stimulated by migration and urbanization. The book illustrates how the migration launched a new sacred order among blacks in the city that reflected aspects of both Southern black religion and modern city life. This new sacred order was also largely female as African American women constituted more than 70 percent of the membership in most black Protestant churches. Ultimately, Wallace Best demonstrates how black southerners imparted a folk religious sensibility to Chicago's black churches. In doing so, they ironically recast conceptions of modern, urban African American religion in terms that signified the rural past. In the same way that working class cultural idioms such as jazz and the blues emerged in the secular arena as a means to represent black modernity, he says, African American religion in Chicago, with its negotiation between the past, the present, rural and urban, revealed African American religion in modern form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing growth of Christianity in the global South over the course of the twentieth century has sparked an equally rapid growth in studies of ''World Christianity,'' which have dismantled the notion that Christianity is a Western religion. What, then, are we to make of the waves of Western missionaries who have, for centuries, been evangelizing in the global South? Were they merely, as many have argued, agents of imperialism out to impose Western values? In An Unpredictable Gospel, Jay Case examines the efforts of American evangelical missionaries in light of this new scholarship. He argues that if they were agents of imperialism, they were poor ones. Western missionaries had a dismal record of converting non-Westerners to Christianity. The ministries that were most successful were those that empowered the local population and adapted to local cultures. In fact, influence often flowed the other way, with missionaries serving as conduits for ideas that shaped American evangelicalism. Case traces these currents and sheds new light on the relationship between Western and non-Western Christianities.

Book John of History Baptist of Faith

Download or read book John of History Baptist of Faith written by James F. McGrath and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the historical Jesus typically reduce John the Baptist to a subordinate role in the story of Christian origins. This meticulous historical study focuses on John himself, revealing his extensive and enduring influence. In the popular imagination, John the Baptist plays the supporting role of Jesus’s unkempt forerunner. But meticulous historical study reveals his wide-reaching and enduring influence on the history of religion. The first study of its kind, John of History, Baptist of Faith sheds light on the historical John the Baptist and his world. James F. McGrath applies historical-critical methodology not only to the New Testament but also to the Mandaean Book of John, a holy text of the last extant gnostic sect. McGrath uses the teachings of John’s pupil, Jesus, as a window into his mentor’s beliefs. Along the way, he brings new clarity to questions of contention among scholars, such as John’s use of immersion as a substitute for temple sacrifice. Bold in its claims yet careful in its method, John of History, Baptist of Faith lends fresh insight into John, Jesus, and their world. McGrath’s pioneering monograph will challenge and intrigue students and scholars of the New Testament and Second Temple Judaism.
