Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Shipping: Its History, Organisation and Importance TO write an essay on British Shipping bearing all these points in mind was no easy task to undertake, especially when the length Of the book was necessarily limited. But the writing Of the book has been a great pleasure for many reasons. One's interests from early boyhood have been connected with the sea and ships, thus the work entailed a review of many past years, and the recollection Of many inter esting experiences. Moreover, in making oneself familiar with the latest phases Of the industry it has been necessary to visit ships, ports and docks, and to interview, or correspond with, those who are in authority. The kindly courtesy with which ques tions, both oral and written, have been answered, merits more than the mere expression Of thanks. Book Maritime History of Britain and Ireland C 400 2001

Download or read book Maritime History of Britain and Ireland C 400 2001 written by Ian Friel and published by None. This book was released on 2003 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative account of the maritime history of the British Isles over the last 1500 years. Ian Friel defines 'maritime history' broadly to encompass naval developments, sea trade, exploration and colonization, fishing, social history, the technology of shipbuilding and a host of other themes related to the ways in which maritime activity has affected the history of Britain. Conversely, he examines the ways in which British seafaring enterprise has affected the world, for good and ill. Beginning with the maritime world of late Roman Britain, Ian Friel reviews seafaring in the Celtic world, Viking raids and settlement, and the Norman invasion and conquest. The second chapter studies England as part of the 'cross-Channel kingdom', the wars with France 1204-1453 and the rise and fall of English naval forces. Chapter three deals with the early British voyages of exploration, the Tudor and Stuart navies, and the first permanent naval dockyards. Following on comes the rise of empire and a growing public consciousness of the sea in national affairs: the defeat of piracy, the establishment of English colonies abroad and the growth of economic structures that supported empire, such as the slave trade. Chapter five describes the Pax Britannica, with England becoming the greatest naval and mercantile power in the world, until she fell into war in 1914. This period saw the development of the steamship and motor vessel and the establishment of major commercial docks; also the growth of trade unionism, class-consciousness and labor disputes in the maritime industries. The final chapter describes the rapidly changing technology of naval warfare in the two World Wars, and the decline of Britain as a naval power and as a shipbuilding nation. Offshore oil and gas industries signaled major changes in maritime trade and industry; traditional ports declined, and the European Union had profound effects on British maritime industries.

Book The Rise of the English Shipping Industry in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries

Download or read book The Rise of the English Shipping Industry in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries written by Ralph Davis and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a reprint of Ralph Davis’ seminal 1962 book, The Rise of the English Shipping Industry in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries. The aim was to examine the economic reasons for the growth of British shipping before the arrival of modern technology, with a particular attention on overseas trade. The study can roughly be divided into two halves. The first is an in-depth exploration the roles within the shipping industry, from shipbuilders and shipowners to seamen and masters, from an economic perspective. The second is a chapter-by-chapter review of British overseas trade with Northern Europe, Southern Europe, the Mediterranean, East India, and America and the West Indies. The final two chapters diverge from the main sections, and focus on the interplay between government, war, and shipping. Davis attaches no extra significance to any particular nation or role, and offers an even-handed approach to maritime history still considered rare in the present day. Costs, profits, voyage estimates, ship-prices, and earnings all come under close and equal scrutiny as Davis seeks to understand the trades and developments in shipping during the period. To conclude, he places the study into a broader historical context and discovers that shipping played a measured but crucial role in the development of industrialisation and English economic development. This edition includes an introduction by the series editor; Davis’ introduction and preface; seventeen analytical chapters; a concluding chapter; two appendices concerning shipping statistics and sources; and a comprehensive index.

Book A History of British Tramp Shipping 1870 1914 Volume 1

Download or read book A History of British Tramp Shipping 1870 1914 Volume 1 written by Gordon H. Boyce and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated in the novels of Joseph Conrad and vintage films, tramp ships - the precursor of bulk carriers - are not well understood today. Yet, these vessels transported in bulk essential minerals and ores, grains, timber, and other commodities and played a vital role in creating the modern global economy. While the histories of some individual tramp firms have been written, this book uses personal correspondence and surviving company records to chart the development of the entire industry - the largest in the world- during a period of transformational technical change. Who were the bold, risk-takers who founded tramp firms? How did they mobilise the resources needed to enter this dynamic sector, build immense companies, and accumulate vast fortunes? Why did others fail? This study reveals how executives learned ‘the art’ of managing tramps and developed strategic networking skills. Tramp shipping resonates with many of today’s high-growth industries: it was an information intensive, high stress operation that required rapid - sometimes instinctive - decision-making within a turbulent market. Building business networks was supported by a distinctive culture that streamlined communication. This innovative study places information, knowledge, learning, culture, and communication at the centre of the analysis in order to transport readers into the minds of those fascinating entrepreneurs who helped build the modern world.
