Book History of Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Astronomy Classic Reprint written by George Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Astronomy It would, indeed, be a pleasure to entertain the hope that these pages might, among new recruits, arouse an interest in the greatest of all the sciences, or that those who have handled the theoretical or practical side might be led by them to read in the original some of the classics of astronomy. Many students have much compassion for the schoolboy of to-day, who is not allowed the luxury of learning the art of reasoning from him who still remains pre-eminently its greatest exponent, Euclid. These students pity also the man of to-morrow, who is not to be allowed to read, in the original Latin of the brilliant Kepler, how he was able - by observations taken from a moving platform, the earth, of the directions of a moving object, Mars - to deduce the exact shape of the path of each of these planets, and their actual positions on these paths at any time. Kepler's masterpiece is one of the most interesting books that was ever written, combining wit, imagination, ingenuity, and certainty. Lastly, it must be noted that, as a History of England cannot deal with the present Parliament, so also the un finished researches and untested hypotheses of many well known astronomers of to-day cannot be included among the records of the History of Astronomy. The writer regrets the necessity that thus arises of leaving without mention the names of many who are now making history in astronomical work. Book A Popular History of Astronomy

Download or read book A Popular History of Astronomy written by Agnes M. Clerke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of Astronomy: During the Nineteenth Century The progress of astronomy during the last hundred years has been rapid and extraordinary. In its distinctive features, moreover, the nature of that progress has been such as to lend itself with facility to untechnical treatment. To this circumstance the present volume owes its origin. It embodies an attempt to enable the ordinary reader to follow, with intelligent interest, the course of modern astronomical inquiries, and to realize (so far as it can at present be realized) the full effect of the comprehensive change in the whole aspect, purposes, and methods of celestial science introduced by the momentous discovery of spectrum analysis. Since Professor Grant's invaluable work on the History of Physical Astronomy was published, a third of a century has elapsed. During the interval a so-called new astronomy has grown up by the side of the old. One effect of its advent has been to render the science of the heavenly bodies more popular, both in its needs and in its nature, than formerly. More popular in its needs, since its progress now primarily depends upon the interest in, and consequent efforts towards its advancement of the general public; more popular in its nature, because the kind of knowledge it now chiefly tends to accumulate is more easily intelligible - less remote from ordinary experience - than that evolved by the aid of the calculus from materials collected by the use of the transit-instrument and chrono graph. Book Popular Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Popular Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Simon Newcomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Astronomy Astronomy is the most ancient of the physical sciences, be ing distinguished among them by its slow and progressive development from the earliest ages until the present time. In no other science has each generation which advanced it 'been so much indebted to its predecessors for both the facts and the ideas necessary to make the advance. The conception of a globular and moving earth pursuing her course through the celestial spaces among her sister planets, which we see as stars, is one to the entire evolution of which no one mind and no one age can lay claim. It was the result of a gradual process of education, of which the subject was not an indi vidual, but the human race. The great astronomers of all ages have built upon foundations laid by their predecessors; and when we attempt to search out the first founder, we find ourselves lost in the mists of antiquity. The theory of uni versal gravitation was founded by Newton upon the laws of Kepler, the observations and measurements of his French con temporaries, and the geometry of Apollonius. Kepler used as his material the observations of Tycho Brahe, and built upon the theory of Copernicus. When we seek the origin of the instruments used by Tycho, we soon find ourselves among2 system OF the world historically developed. Book Old and New Astronomy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old and New Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Richard Anthony Proctor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old and New Astronomy If such powers of vision, and also (for they would be even more needed) such powers of conception, were given to the astronomer, that the extent of the domain which the telescope has revealed to man could be adequately recognised, while be further became cognisant of the way in which the various portions of that domain are occupied, I conceive that, deeply as he would be impressed by the amazing scene, the sense of wonder he would experience would sink almost into nothingness by comparison with that which would overwhelm him could he recognise with equal clearness the movements taking place amongst the orbs presented to his contemplation - could he see moons and moon-systems circling around primary planets, these urging their way with inconceivable velocity around their central suns, while amid the star depths the suns were seen swiftly travelling on their several courses, star streams and star-clusters aggregating or segregating according to the various influences of the attractions to which they were subject, and the vast spaces occupied by the gaseous nebulm stirred to their inmost depths by the action of mighty forces whose real nature is as yet unknown to us. During millions, during hundreds, thousands, millions of millions of years in the past, such movements have been in progress, and they will continue during countless millions of years which are yet to come. Nay, it may well be that to speak of time, thus viewed, as measurable by years, even though we number them by millions, is as idle as it would be to speak of miles when dealing with the measurement of star-strewn space. Download or read book An Introduction to Astronomy Classic Reprint written by Forest Ray Moulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Astronomy As now arranged, the first chapters are devoted to a discus sion of the earth and its motions. They present splendid examples of the characteristics and methods of science, and amply illustrate the care with which scientific theories are established. The conclusions which are set forth are bound up with the development of science from the dawn of recorded history to the recent experiments on the rigidity and the elas ticity of the earth. They show how closely various sciences are interlocked, and how much an understanding of the earth depends upon its relations to the sky. They lead naturally to a more formal treatment of the celestial sphere and a study of the constellations. A familiarity with the brighter stars and the more conspicuous constellations is regarded as important. One who has become thoroughly acquainted with them will always experience a thrill when he looks up at night into a cloudless sky.
