Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Philosophy of Creation and the Human Race We feel impressed with the conviction, that to the understanding of many, on first reading this work, the doctrine and ideas herein developed, will indeed, be obscured by mystery; and, owing to this fact, we would most earnestly solicit the patience of the reader to weary not, but to give careful, deep, and unbiased thought and consideration to the whole volume, and especially to those subjects which may, for a time, seem enveloped in mystery, with the sure understanding that all things - every principle of science, every development of philosophy - was involved in deepest obscurity ere its germ was unfolded, developed, and explained to the juvenile mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Man: A Sketch of the Origin of the Human Race Darwin's views were bitterly opposed, although it would seem more dignified if God had fashioned the first man (not directly from a clod of soil, but indirectly after a long preparation of the material) through series of inter mediate stages of lower animals, from the infinitely more refined organism of an anthropoid brute. Yet, even from the standpoint of modern science we can still insist that man, though his body consists of the same material as the dust of the earth, holds an unique position among the rest of creation. The sway of conservatism, however, is great, and so the people trained in the old views of thought clung with tenacity to a literal belief in the story of Genesis. In spite of all that Darwin said in favor of the kinship of man to the rest of animate creation, almost half a century passed before the doctrine of evolution gained ground and became universally recognized; and there were no other objections to it, than the implication as to man's descent from lower forms of life and the denial of the legend that God had formed him directly from the dust of the earth. At present there may be no one trained in modes of scientific thinking who does not unhesitatingly accept the doctrine of evolution with all that it implies; but having understood the physiological solution of the origin of man, it may be wise to look at the argument of the reactionary party, whose main contention consists in ridiculing the idea that man was descended from the ape. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Creation is a book by German scientist Ernst Haeckel, which deals with issues of creation and evolution under influence of Charles Darwin. The book did a great deal to further explain "Darwinism" and widens the theory to the world. Haeckel argued that human evolution consisted of precisely 22 phases, the 21st – the "missing link" – being a halfway step between apes and humans. He even formally named this missing link Pithecanthropus alalus, translated as "ape man without speech"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation: Its Argument Examined and Exposed These books are very easy to write, as will appear; as easy as a collection of ghost stories explained, or a catalogue of impostures discovered, or charities abused, culled out Of the last leaves of the Mendicity Society's Reports; leaving without mention the heaps Of dis tressing and deserving cases relieved, with which the rest of their pages are crowded and consecrated. The volume before us is the very romance of philo sophy - for in these times, when children give up fairy tales, and read and talk philosophy, philosophy also must have its romances, as well as war and love, with the due foundation on fact, and finishing of fancy; and all the chiselling and squaring and fitting of the cun ning workman, by which he fashions the rudest and most unlikely lumps, to form the beautiful and symms tricel structure which he has pre-determined upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of Creation; Its Origin and Its Value: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate Divinity School in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy I am indebted to Professor George Burman Foster for suggest ing the subject, for helpful hints as to the treatment and for much besides not easy to designate. I can not refrain from a fuller expression of deep indebted ness to my lamented friend and instructor, President William Rainey Harper, under whose guidance and inspiration the Old Testament materials were worked out. Under his leadership the Old Testament became more human and more divine. Out of the historical and critical study there emerged a new spiritual unity and a new e-thieo-religious value, as the supreme purpose [of crea tion and redemption was seen fulfilling itself in many ways through an age-long process; and the divine authority remained, not because supported by isolated texts torn from their contexts, but because through all the process the one increasing purpose was manifest, the purpose of holy love. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
