Book excerpt: The Tennessee 15th (Stewart's-Logwood's) Cavalry Regiment [also called 2nd Organization or 15th Consolidated] was assembled at Oxford, Mississippi, in February, 1864. It was organized by consolidating part of the 15th (Stewart's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, Street's Mississippi Cavalry Battalion, and the 16th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The 15th Consolidated Cavalry served in R.V. Richardson's and E.W. Rucker's Brigade, skirmished in Mississippi and Georgia, then returned to Mississippi and fought at Harrisburg. Later it moved to Tennessee and saw action at Memphis, Franklin, and Nashville. Only 75 men came back from Hood's operations, and in February 1865, the regiment was ordered to Alabama where it surrendered in May. Companies Of The Tennessee 15th Cavalry (Consolidated) Peter W. Book excerpt: The Tennessee 9th Cavalry Regiment was organized at Camp Nelson from East Tennessee refugees in the early part of 1863, with Joseph H. Parsons, of Knox county, as colonel. It assisted in the capture of Cumberland gap, after which it escorted the prisoners to Lexington, Ky. Returning to Knoxville, it remained there until after the siege of that place, and was then detailed to escort prisoners to Camp Nelson, from which place it was ordered to Nashville, where it arrived in January and remained until about May 1st. It was stationed at Gallatin from that time until August, when it was constituted a portion of the brigade known as the "Governor's Guards," under the command of Gen. Gillem, which then entered upon a campaign in East Tennessee. It participated with great gallantry in all the battles of that campaign, and at Bull's gap a large portion of the regiment was taken prisoners. A large part of the 11th cavalry having also been captured it was consolidated with the remainder of the 9th. On March 21, 1865, it entered upon the raid through Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia under Gen. Stoneman. It returned to Tennessee in May and was mustered out at Knoxville in Sept., 1865.

Book excerpt: The Tennessee 15th & 37th Infantry Regiments were consolidated early in the war due to severe losses they had suffered in early battles. They continued together throughout the Atlanta and Carolinas Campaigns, although they retained their identity as separate units. The 15th Infantry regiment was organized for state service at Jackson, Tennessee on June 7, 1861, with nine companies. Nine of the companies composing the 37th Infantry regiment were organized in August and September, 1861. They assembled at Camp Ramsay, near Knoxville, where the regiment was organized. The original intention was to form a rifle brigade of three regiments, hence the name 1st Tennessee Rifles. However, it was not possible to secure guns of any sort, much less rifles, so that name was soon dropped. Shortly after organization the regiment moved to Camp of Instruction at Camp Sam Hays, Germantown, Shelby County. While enroute to that point, Company "E" joined the regiment at Madison, Alabama. They may have been part of the Union troops involved in the disappearance of the Confederate Gold at Washington, GA, but there is no record that they were present at the capture of President Davis. Book excerpt: The Texas 15th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the early summer of 1862 with about 1,000 men. Some of its members were raised at Fort Worth and Wolfe City, and in Wise and Hood counties. After serving in the Department of Texas, it was dismounted and ordered to Arkansas. Here the unit was captured at Arkansas Post in January, 1863. Exchanged and reorganized, it was consolidated with the 6th and 10th Regiments and assigned to Deshler's, J.A. Smith's, and Granbury's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It participated in many battles from Chickamauga to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and fought in North Carolina. The 6th/10th/15th lost 20 killed, 95 wounded, and 28 missing of the 667 engaged at Chickamauga and totalled 642 men and 437 arms in December, 1863. Few surrendered on April 26, 1865. The Texas 15th Cavalry was made up of men from Ft. Worth and Milford, and Hood, Wise and Wolfe Counties.
