I have also done my best to make it accurate and reliable, and at the same time to arrange all the details so as to be clear and precise, with the view of, in a great measure, taking the place of the large accumulation Of Correspondence and Returns which go to form the greater portion of a regiment's records, and out Of which it is difficult to ascertain any required particulars without great labour and loss Of time. It would have been comparatively easy to compile a history Of more inte rest to the general reader, in less than half the time, by omitting many of the details and references here given the Appendices alone having required for their preparation more than double the time occupied by the remainder of the book.
