Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplement to the First and Second Editions of Historical Memorials of Westminster Abbey In the second and third editions of this work I have been suggested by critics, or kindly sent to me from various quarters, for which I beg to return my sincere thanks. It is only by such information that a work touching on so many points of English history and art can be brought to anything like the correctness which the subject requires. I have also expanded or justified some statements which have been questioned on insufficient grounds. Other additions have been made from the constant appearance of fresh objects of interest in the Abbey. Of these, the most important is the record of the Royal Vaults in Henry VII.'s Chapel, as disclosed in the search for the burial-place of King James I. The details of the monastic and capitular history, although not capable of any material enlargement, have been drawn out at somewhat more length. Some additional sources of information have come to light, particularly the Mss. of the Heralds Office communicated by Mr. Doyne C. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westminster Abbey, Its Architecture, History and Monuments, Vol. 2 After the Queen's death it is said that the baser passions of avarice and inins tice gained sway with him. Naturally cautious and prudent, his many years of deprivation and exile may have empha sized this tendency. Constant companion ship with a nature so generous, so unself ish, so sweet and loveable as that of his queen, may have held these unbeautiful qualities of the king in abeyance: and, in any case, they seem to have been some what exaggerated by historians. Neither does it pre tend to describe and enumerate every single grave and monument within the Church and precincts. That were indeed fa1 beyond its scope. Book Westminster Abbey

Download or read book Westminster Abbey written by James Ridgway and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westminster Abbey: Its History, Pageants and Royal Memorials From the Foundation by Edward the Confessor, A. D. 1065, to the Funeral of Henry V. A. D. 1422 The following pages were written, without any intention of their being published, at intervals extending over two years, amidst constant occupation, and witli but little opportunity of referring to "authorities;" for, to any one occupied all day, like the author of this work, the British Museum, which is closed in the evening, affords very small assistance. Still, at the suggestion of some friends, who heard the substance of these chapters delivered in the form of lectures to a parochial institution, they are submitted to the kind indulgence of the public; and, if they prove as interesting to them, as their compilation has been to the author, they will not have been brought to light in vain. They tell but little that is new, though old things may have assumed a new face; and their object is to connect our national history with the Abbey, which is the greatest ornament of our metropolis, and by means of the latter to illustrate the former, and invest both with a more living interest.
