Book A Primer of Historical English Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of Historical English Grammar Classic Reprint written by Henry Sweet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Historical English Grammar The object of this book is to give the essentials of historical English grammar as far as is possible within the limits of 100 pages, excluding syntax, but including the history of the language, phonology, inflections, particles, composition, and derivation. Although it covers exactly the same ground as my S/zort Hzlr/orz'cal Grammar (itself an abridgment of the historical portions of my jvcrw Englz's/z Grammar), yet the great compression involved in writing it has obliged me to depart considerably from the plan of the larger works; although in some cases, where the limits of conciseness had already been reached in the Sbaft Hzlrlorz'cal Grammar, I have naturally preferred con servatism to useless innovation. Book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of English Etymology Classic Reprint written by Walter W. Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of English Etymology The present volume is intended to serve as a help to the student of English etymology. In my Etymological Dictionary, the numerous examples of similar letter - changes are invariably separated from each other, by the necessity for adhering to the alphabetical order. It is therefore advisable to re-arrange the results so as to shew what words should be under consideration at the same time. It is only by a com parison of this character that the various phonetic laws can be properly observed and tested. I have found it advisable to follow the example of Mr. Sweet, in his History of English Sounds, and to consider what may be called the 'native element' of our language apart from the Romance or imported element. Hence I have purposely excluded all words of French origin from the present investigation. A few French words are quoted here and there by way of illustration, but no inferences are here drawn from the results which their history furnishes. If the present volume should meet with approval, I propose to issue another volume, to be entitled 'second Series, ' Which will deal particularly, and almost exclusively, with the words which have been imported into English from French, as well as from Latin, Greek, and other languages (except Teutonic and Celtic) af/er the N orman Conquest. Book English Etymology

Download or read book English Etymology written by Friedrich Kluge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Etymology: A Select Glossary Serving as an Introduction to the History of the English Language If we may be allowed to give a hint as to the use of our little book, we should advise the teacher to make it a point to deal always with a group of words at a time. Special interest attaches, for instance, to words of early Christian origin, to the names of festivals and the days of the week; besides these the names of the various parts of the house and of the materials used in building, the words for cattle and the various kinds of meat, for eating and drinking, etc. Might be made the subject of a suggestive discussion. By treating etymology in this way, the teacher will have the advantage of converting a les son in the growth of the English language into an inquiry into the history of the anglo-saxon race, thus lending to a naturally dry subject a fresh charm and a deeper meaning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and History of the English Language: And of the Early Literature It Embodies The Lectures which form the basis of the present volume were delivered at the Lowell Institute, in Boston, in the United States, in the autumn and winter of 1860-1861. They were prepared in the preceding summer, with such aids only as my private library afforded, and my departure for Europe in the spring of the latter year has prevented me from giving them so complete a revision as I had hoped to bestow upon them. I have, however, made such additions and other improvements as the time and means at my command would permit, and, having been invited to publish the Lectures first in England, I have endeavoured to remove from them whatever might seem designed exclusively for the American public, and have adapted them, as far as I was able, to the common wants of all who desire to study the literary history of the English tongue. Book History of English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English: A Sketch of the Origin and Development of the English Language With Examples, Down to the Present Day In order to make the book complete there should, no doubt, have been an introductory chapter on Sounds, and how they are made.' 'this is omitted, partly in order to limit the book to some moderate length, partly because of the extreme difficulty of making such a chapter at once scientifically adequate and interesting to the ordinary reader. I have done my best to make what is stated in the course of the book intelligible without such an introduction. The book may perhaps seem in some places rather encumbered with notes. My principle has been to keep the text as short as possible, adding at the foot of the page such further explanations, illustrations, and cautions against mis take as some readers might be likely to wish for or require. Where any of these necessarily exceeded the limits of a footnote I have put it as an appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
