Si la primera alarma sonó en las tiendas de los filósofos de la historia y de los historiadores, pronto se vio que las otras formas de traer el pasado al presente (la conmemoración, la evocación legitimadora, la intervención de los historiadores como publicistas y la omnipresente apelación a la memoria) obligaban a interrogar a fondo nuestro presente y, para quien se atreviera, a repensar nuestro horizonte de futuro. Para no pocos intérpretes, el gran giro hacia el pasado fue la respuesta paradójica a la acusación de amnesia estructural, que tantas veces se esgrimiera contra la cultura moderna. También se interpretó como la contracara de la "difuminación" del futuro, resultado de la crítica a la utopía, de la reacción frente al futurismo de los revolucionarios o reformistas, o del descubrimiento de la contingencia y el riesgo. Tratar de comprender esa "crisis del tiempo" es el objetivo de estas páginas.

Book excerpt: The public authorities have not successfully resolved the management of the traumatic memory of the wars, dictatorships and massacres to which the European project was always intended to be a counterpoint. The conflict of memories and the public discourses about the past are latent on ideological, political and cultural levels. However, if in the past the conflict concerning memories tended to develop inside the borders of countries, it has now leapt into the European arena. This has also led to the confrontation and questioning of the great narratives established in the common memory, especially with countries of the East joining the European Union. Each community, group or nation maintains common memories that do not always fit in or converge with a general overall account. The origins of the UB Solidarity Foundation’s European Observatory on Memories lie in these debates, and through this book — which includes the contributions of specialists in multiple disciplines and the speeches that were given at the first international symposium, “Memory and Power: A Transnational Perspective” — it hopes to present some of the key challenges that this conflict of memories has in store for us in the present and in the future.

La historia se manifiesta así como un terreno inestable en el que entran en pugna distintas memorias que lejos de pretenderse neutrales, se identifican con sensibilidades políticas. Consideraciones en torno a quién, qué y de qué modo las sociedades deben recordar, involucran a su vez otras preguntas: ¿acaso el olvido no forma parte de las operaciones de la memoria? ¿Debería el olvido ser cuestionado en relación con cualquier acercamiento a los hechos pasados? ¿Es posible reconstruir plenamente el tiempo pretérito? ¿Cómo delimitar un límite entre pasado, presente y futuro? ¿Existe una distinción entre ellos, más allá de las indicadas en términos lingüísticos? ¿Podemos rescatar del olvido ciertos acontecimientos históricos? Estos interrogantes han sido abordados por distintos pensadores que en este documento buscaremos retomar. Kant, Nietzsche, Proust, Benjamin, Foucault, Althusser y Hartog serán algunos de los teóricos más relevantes en las reflexiones aquí presentes. Sendos intelectuales animarán elaboraciones que examinen las complejas intersecciones entre historia, memoria y olvido.
