Book Ideology in Language Use

Download or read book Ideology in Language Use written by Jef Verschueren and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between language and ideology has long been central to research in discourse analysis, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, and has also informed other fields such as sociology and literary criticism. This book, by one of the world's leading pragmatists, introduces a new framework for the study of ideology in written language, using the tools, methods and theories of pragmatics and discourse analysis. Illustrations are drawn systematically from a coherent corpus of excerpts from late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century history textbooks dealing with episodes of colonial history and in particular the 1857 'Indian Mutiny'. It includes the complete corpus of excerpts, allowing researchers and students to evaluate all illustrations; at the same time, it provides useful practice and training materials. The book is intended as a teaching tool in language-, discourse- and communication-oriented programs, but also for historians and social and political scientists.

Book Jean Paul Marat

Download or read book Jean Paul Marat written by Ian Germani and published by Lewiston, N.Y. ; Queenston, Ont. : E. Mellen Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study demonstrates how the image of Jean-Paul Marat, revolutionary journalist and Jacobin deputy, was manipulated, both during and after the French Revolution. A wide range of media, including funeral orations, newspapers, festival programs, song-sheets, prints and paintings, as well as the work of 19th and 20th-century historians, is utilized to demonstrate Marat's symbolic importance to the political struggles of revolutionary and post-revolutionary France. Competition between various revolutionary factions for the right to possess and define Marat's heroic image is documented, as are the ways in which that image served to legitimize and project their ideologies. Marat's image as anti-hero is also considered, with attention focussed upon moderate, federalist, and Thermidorian propaganda. Providing a full treatment of the most important hero-cult of the French Revolution, this study also identifies the importance of heroes and anti-heroes in modern political life.

Book The Bourgeois Citizen in Nineteenth Century France

Download or read book The Bourgeois Citizen in Nineteenth Century France written by Carol E. Harrison and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bourgeois Citizen in Nineteenth-Century France analyses the process by which class society developed in post-revolutionary France. Focusing on bourgeois men and on their voluntary associations, Carol E. Harrison addresses the construction of class and gender identities. In their gentlemen's clubs, learned societies, musical groups, gardening clubs, and charitable associations, bourgeois Frenchmen defined a social order in which the atomized individuals of revolutionarly law could find places for themselves in reconstituted social groups and hierarchies. The practices of sociability reflected a bourgeois view of society as harmonious rather than torn by conflict. The potentially universal virtues of bourgeois masculinity provided a basis for a consensus that could protect social order from the destructive competitiveness of French political life and the industrializing economy. The sociable interaction of male citizens was the crucial bridge between the destruction of Frances's old regime and the development of a mature industrial class society.
