Hodge, D.D. Professor in the Theological Seminary, at Princeton, N. J." Thing that could be said against the grounds I meant to take, I came home and published in the Southern Religious Telegraph a. Few hasty Sketches, to elicit what might be said in opposition to what I thought was the truth 1n the case. The publication of these hasty and superficial papers excited more attention and awakened more interest than I anticipated. The anxiety with which they were sought after, plainly showed that they communicated infor mation and made disclosures that were much needed, and by them many of our best informed Ministers were brought to see how little they knew before of the rise and progress of our beloved church, which induced them ardently to desire still further information upon that subject; and hence, desires add importunities from va rions and distant quarters have been sent to me ever since to prose cute this work still further. But while my Sketches afforded plea sure to many, they awakened apprehensions and enkindled opposi tion, in these times of party collision, to a degree which was little expected. My opinions upon American Presbyterianism having been formed before party strife had done such mischief among us, my statements were made entirely irrespective of these evil times on which we have fallen. Download or read book A Popular History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America Classic Reprint written by Jacob Harris Patton and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Popular History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America This volume is designed to trace concisely but clearly the History and Principles of the Presbyterian Church from the time of Henry VIII. to the close of the General Assembly of 1899. The effort has been to present the facts in such history, and note their influence; meanwhile, to give special attention to the all-important phase of the inner Christian life of the Church. In ascertaining the knowledge in respect to the latter subject, attention has been directed, as occasion required, to the lives and labors of leading men in the ministry, as well as laymen, around whom clustered influences for good, that often extended far and wide in their respective communities, and even to the Church at large. The author has availed himself of highly important and original documents pertaining to the Congregationalists and Presbyterians during the Colonial period. (See authorities consulted.) When preparing his "Four Hundred Years of American History," the attention of the author was often drawn to the influence of the Presbyterian Church during the last half century of the Colonial times and also during the current growth of our national life. This influence was felt upon the domestic and Christian as well as upon the political life of the people. In our country, governed as it is by representatives elected by the people themselves, the moral connection between political and church life is consistent and peculiarly intimate. It therefore comes within the scope of this history to trace the influences, good or bad, of the events and policies, whereby the condition of public affairs has incidentally aided the progress of the Church, and sometimes had a retarding effect, as in the case of war or of financial or industrial disturbances whereby all the citizens were more or less affected. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Vol. 1 Sometime during the past summer, the Rev. Dr. Hoge, of Ohio, wrote to one of his friends in Philadelphia, stating that a work was greatly needed, which should give a distinct account of the character of the present controversies in our Church. He conceived that in order to the proper exhibition of the subject, the documentary history of the formation of the first Presbytery, of the adopting act, of the great schism, of the union of the two Synods, and of the formation of our present constitution, should be clearly presented to the public. The gentleman to whom this letter was addressed submitted it to a meeting of clergymen and laymen, who all concurred in the opinion that such a work ought to be prepared, and united in requesting the undersigned to undertake the task. A request from such a source the writer did not feel at liberty to decline. He soon found that the work was far more extensive than was at first supposed. If the documentary history of the leading events connected with the origin and progress of our Church was to be given at all, it was clearly right that it should be done in the best manner the materials at command would allow. These materials, though in some respects very defective, were ascertained to be too numerous and too important to be compressed within the limits of a pamphlet. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America, Vol. 1 The reunion of the two branches of the Presbyterian Church in this country, happily effected in 1869 after a division of more than thirty years, has called for the revision of a work prepared during the period of their separation. It has not been thought necessary to add to it the record of the steps which led to the reunion, as these are embodied in the volume entitled Presby terian Reunion Memorial, published in 1870; but in order to do impartial justice to the position and views of the two parties from the time when they first appeared, certain changes and modifications of statement have been deemed necessary, and these have been embodied in this revised edition. So far as most of the statements of facts are con cerned, very little change has been required, but what before was asserted without qualification as to the rela tion and action of the two parties has been so modified that the party by whom such assertion was regarded as historically true or just is alone made responsible for it. In other words, the historian has allowed each party to speak for itself, representing its own views, while the reader is left at liberty to draw his own conclusions. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Triumph of the Presbytery of Hanover, or Separation of Church and State in Virginia: With a Concise History of the Presbyterian Church in the United States From 1705 to 1888 In accordance with the views of those whose opinions are worthy of respect, the author has republished that article, and to which he has also added a concise history of the Presbyterian Church in the United States from the organiza tion of its first Presbytery, at Freehold, N. J., in 1705, to 1888. This booklet contains a sum mary of the incidents and characteristic princi ples whose influence moulded the inner life of this Church and promoted its progress; while it omits the numerous details in respect to the separate organizations of Presbyteries and Synods and of individual churches, it goes into detail sufficient to afford the general reader a clear, and, it is hoped, a satisfactory idea of the subject. It is highly proper to give the younger Presbyterz'ons Of to-day an opportunity to learn of the remarkably consistent career of their own Church; of its steady and uniform progress from that early day to the present - covering a period of one hundred and eighty-three years. This publication is in View of the prospective reunion of the Northern and Southern branches of the Presbyterian Church in 1888; which re union, if consummated, will be under condi tions that will render its influence far-reaching and beneficial, not merely to the Church itself, but likewise to the Nation. The reasons for this hope and opinion are given in the booklet itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Constitutional History of the Presbyterian Church Vol 2 written by Charles Hodge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional History of the Presbyterian Church, Vol. 2: In the United States of America; 1741 to 1788 The design of this history is to exhibit the character and constitution of the Presbyterian Church in the United States. To accomplish this object, it was necessary to bring to view, not only the declarations, but the acts of its highest judicatory. The work has thus become rather a history of the synod, than of the whole church, and does not pretend to enter into those details, which would be necessary in a more comprehensive work. Those controversies, however, which affected the action of the synod, come legitimately within the scope of this history. Hence an account of the great revival which occurred towards the middle of the last century, was necessary, in order to render intelligible the history of the dissentions which agitated and ultimately divided the synod. To that revival therefore, the introductory chapter of the present volume is devoted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of First Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, North Carolina, 1816-1891 At all times and in all places, the history of the beginnings and the progress of Presbyterianism has been intimately connected with the history of the rise and development of education. These two things have been as intimately associated with Raleigh as in other parts of the United States so that any account of Presbyterians in this city must be preceded by a brief narrative of facts and its first institution of learning. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of the Bible Presbyterian Church and Its Agencies: Maintaining the True Spiritual Succession of American Presbyterianism in Doctrine and Life, in Worship and Government The Westminster Confession of Faith was born out of loyalty to the Bible. It is not the sole possession of any one church group but it has been since its birth the operating standard of the historic Presbyterian Church. From olden days the Presbyterian Church recognized the Confession to be a faithful summary of the great doctrines of the Bible. Presbyterian doctrinal standards include the Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms. These are three state ments, varying in form, fullness, and purpose, of the same creed. They are known as the West minster standards because the famous Assembly of divines that framed them held their sessions in England's great Abbey of Westminster. The Westminster Assembly Was a representative body, called by the English Parliament, made up of one hundred and twenty-one divines, eleven lords, twenty commoners, from all the counties of England and the Universities of Oxford and Cam bridge with seven Commissioners from Scotland. Many of them jeopardized their livings by accepting the Parliament's appointment, and after the Restoration cheerfully sacrificed their earthly all for conscience' sake (smith, E. W., The Creed of Presbyterians, The Westminster Press, 1902, p. The Assembly was a select assembly com posed of scholars, theologians, orators, statesmen men well qualified to voice the deepest religious convictions.
