Book The Correspondence

Book excerpt: "Can civilization save us from ourselves? That is the question J.D. Daniels asks in his first book, a series of six letters written during dark nights of the soul. Working from his own highly varied experience--as a janitor, a night watchman, an adjunct professor, a drunk, an exterminator, a dutiful son--he considers how far books and learning and psychoanalysis can get us, and how much we're stuck in the mud. In prose wound as tight as a copper spring, Daniels takes us from the highways of his native Kentucky to the Balearic Islands and from the Pampas of Brazil to the rarefied precincts of Cambridge, Massachusetts"--

Book The Correspondence of John Cotton

Download or read book The Correspondence of John Cotton written by Sargent Bush Jr. and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cotton (1584-1652) was a key figure in the English Puritan movement in the first half of the seventeenth century, a respected leader among his generation of emigrants from England to New England. This volume collects all known surviving correspondence by and to Cotton. These 125 letters--more than 50 of which are here published for the first time--span the decades between 1621 and 1652, a period of great activity and change in the Puritan movement and in English history. Now carefully edited, annotated, and contextualized, the letters chart the trajectory of Cotton's career and revive a variety of voices from the troubled times surrounding Charles I's reign, including those of such prominent figures as Oliver Cromwell, Bishop John Williams, John Dod, and Thomas Hooker, as well as many little-known persons who wrote to Cotton for advice and guidance. Among the treasures of early Anglo-American history, these letters bring to life the leading Puritan intellectual of the generation of the Great Migration and illustrate the network of mutual support that nourished an intellectual and spiritual movement through difficult times.

Book Letters from the Closet

Download or read book Letters from the Closet written by Amy Hollingsworth and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An honest and poignant look into the deeply intimate yet platonic relationship between a gay English teacher and his young female protge-each seeking connection and acceptance - as reflected by the decade of letters they exchanged. It's Tuesdays with Morrie- if Morrie were young and gay and Mitch Albom were a woman. Every writer needs a room of his own, but for some people, at certain times and in certain circumstances, the best you can do is a closet. From the confines of his closet, John wrote letters that were read, cherished and then locked away for decades.

Book The Correspondence of Thomas Reid

Download or read book The Correspondence of Thomas Reid written by Thomas Reid and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Reid (1710&–1796) is now recognized as one of the towering figures of the Enlightenment. Best known for his published writings on epistemology and moral theory, he was also an accomplished mathematician and natural philosopher, as an earlier volume of his manuscripts edited by Paul Wood for the Edinburgh Reid Edition, Thomas Reid on the Animate Creation, has shown. The Correspondence of Thomas Reid collects all of the known letters to and from Reid in a fully annotated form. Letters already published by Sir William Hamilton and others have been reedited, and roughly half of the letters included appear in print for the first time. Writing in 1802, Reid's disciple and biographer Dugald Stewart doubted that Reid's correspondence &"would be generally interesting.&" This collection proves otherwise, for the letters illuminate virtually every aspect of Reid's life and career and, in some instances, provide us with invaluable evidence about activities otherwise undocumented in his manuscripts or published works. Through his correspondence we can trace Reid's relations with contemporaries such as David Hume and his colleagues at both King's College, Aberdeen, and the University of Glasgow, as well as his engagement with the most controversial philosophical, scientific, and political issues of his day. If anything, the letters assembled here serve as the starting point for understanding Reid and his place in the Enlightenment.

Book The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham Volume 1

Download or read book The Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham Volume 1 written by Jeremy Bentham and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five volumes of the Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham contain over 1,300 letters written both to and from Bentham over a 50-year period, beginning in 1752 (aged three) with his earliest surviving letter to his grandmother, and ending in 1797 with correspondence concerning his attempts to set up a national scheme for the provision of poor relief. Against the background of the debates on the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, to which he made significant contributions, Bentham worked first on producing a complete penal code, which involved him in detailed explorations of fundamental legal ideas, and then on his panopticon prison scheme. Despite developing a host of original and ground-breaking ideas, contained in a mass of manuscripts, he published little during these years, and remained, at the close of this period, a relatively obscure individual. Nevertheless, these volumes reveal how the foundations were laid for the remarkable rise of Benthamite utilitarianism in the early nineteenth century. Bentham’s early life is marked by his extraordinary precociousness, but also family tragedy: by the age of 10 he had lost five infant siblings and his mother. The letters in this volume document his difficult relationship with his father and his increasing attachment to his surviving younger brother Samuel, his education, his interest in chemistry and botany, and his committing himself to a life of philosophy and legal reform.

Book M F K Fisher a Life in Letters

Download or read book M F K Fisher a Life in Letters written by Mary Frances Kennedy Fisher and published by Counterpoint LLC. This book was released on 1997 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six decades of correspondence sketch the story of a young adult who shouldered enormous domestic responsibilities as daughter, mother, and wife - a sensuous woman who managed to find success as a writer despite a paucity of money, time, and occasionally, spirit. These letters give voice to the self-doubt that lingered behind her strong public persona and tell of her long struggle to find a place in the world - not only as a writer but as a person.

Book Correspondence

Download or read book Correspondence written by Paul Celan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Celan (1920-70) is one of the best-known German poets of the Holocaust; many of his poems, admired for their spare, precise diction, deal directly with its stark themes. Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-73) is recognized as one of post-World War II German literature's most important novelists, poets, and playwrights. It seems only appropriate that these two contemporaries and masters of language were at one time lovers, and they shared a lengthy, artful, and passionate correspondence. Collected here for the first time in English are their letters written between 1948 and 1961. Their correspondence forms a moving testimony of the discourse of love in the age after Auschwitz, with all the symptomatic disturbances and crises caused by their conflicting backgrounds and their hard-to-reconcile designs for living--as a woman, as a man, as writers. In addition to the almost 200 letters, the volume includes an important exchange between Bachmann and Gisèle Celan-Lestrange, who married Celan in 1951, as well as the letters between Paul Celan and Swiss writer Max Frisch. "Scarcely more breathlessly and desperately can two lovers ever have struggled for words. Little known among German literary historians, the relationship between these two poets amounts to one of the most dramatic and momentous occurrences in German literature."--FAZ, on the German edition
