Book Hirondelle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hirondelle Classic Reprint written by Henry C. Rowland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hirondelle In an embrasure of the long window, which was open, sat the Lady Sheila and the mellow autumn sunlight bathed her dark beauty in a wash of gold. Her black fringed eyes were cast down in brooding contemplation of a scene of bustling activity on the shingled beach two hundred yards below. Here the skeleton of a ship was set up in the stocks, frames already placed to project unevenly above the sheer-strake which had been pro visionally laid in place, and there came up in staccato musical diapason like a xylophone, the mellow clatter of hammers, and the whine of saws and the biting cut of adzes, and now and then a snatch of song from some one of the more light-hearted builders. Book Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing

Download or read book Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing written by Danielle Taschereau Mamers and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative analysis of Indigenous strategies for overcoming the settler state. How do bureaucratic documents create and reproduce a state’s capacity to see? What kinds of worlds do documents help create? Further, how might such documentary practices and settler colonial ways of seeing be refused? Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing investigates how the Canadian state has used documents, lists, and databases to generate, make visible—and invisible—Indigenous identity. With an archive of legislative documents, registration forms, identity cards, and reports, Danielle Taschereau Mamers traces the political and media history of Indian status in Canada, demonstrating how paperwork has been used by the state to materialize identity categories in the service of colonial governance. Her analysis of bureaucratic artifacts is led by the interventions of Indigenous artists, including Robert Houle, Nadia Myre, Cheryl L’Hirondelle, and Rebecca Belmore. Bringing together media theories of documentation and the strategies of these artists, Settler Colonial Ways of Seeing develops a method for identifying how bureaucratic documents mediate power relations as well as how those relations may be disobeyed and re-imagined. By integrating art-led inquiry with media theory and settler colonial studies approaches, Taschereau Mamers offers a political and media history of the documents that have reproduced Indian status. More importantly, she provides us with an innovative guide for using art as a method of theorizing decolonial political relations. This is a crucial book for any reader interested in the intersection of state archives, settler colonial studies, and visual culture in the context of Canada’s complex and violent relationship with Indigenous peoples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the French reoccupation of Indochina at the end of World War II, the pro-Communist Vietnamese nationalists, or Viet Minh, launched a grassroots insurgency that erupted into a full-fledged war in 1949. After nearly ten years of savage combat, the western world was stunned when Viet Minh forces decisively defeated the French Union army at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in May 1954. Logistics dominated every aspect of the First Indochina War, dictating the objectives, the organization of forces, the timing and duration of the operations, and even the final outcome. In A War of Logistics, Charles R. Shrader meticulously examines both French Union and Viet Minh logistical units during the period of active conventional warfare, as well as external support provided to the French by the United States and to the Vietnamese by China. Although the Vietnamese had few advantages over their opponents, their military leaders brilliantly employed a highly committed network of soldiers and civilians, outfitted to accommodate the challenging terrain on which they fought. Drawing on extensive research such as declassified intelligence documents, the reports of French participants, and accounts by Viet Minh leaders, including Vo Nguyen Giap and Ho Chi Minh, A War of Logistics provides in-depth coverage of the often-ignored but critically important topic of logistics in modern military campaigns.
