Book The K firs of the Hindu Kush

Download or read book The K firs of the Hindu Kush written by Sir George Scott Robertson and published by . This book was released on 1896 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kafiristan, or "The Land of the Infidels," was a region of eastern Afghanistan where the inhabitants had retained their traditional pagan culture and religion and rejected conversion to Islam. The Káfirs of the Hindu-Kush is a detailed ethnographic account of the Kafirs, written by George Scott Robertson (1852-1916), a British administrator in India. With the approval of the government of India, Robertson made a preliminary visit to Kafiristan in October 1889, and then lived among the Kafirs for almost a year, from October 1890 to September 1891. Robertson describes his journey from Chitral (in present-day Pakistan) to Kafiristan and the difficulties he encountered in traveling about the country and in gaining information about the Kafir culture and religion. The latter, he writes, "is a somewhat low form of idolatry, with an admixture of ancestor-worship and some traces of fire-worship also. The gods and goddesses are numerous, and of varying degrees of importance or popularity." Robertson describes religious practices and ceremonies, the tribal and clan structure of Kafir society, the role of slavery, the different villages in the region, and everyday life and social customs, including dress, diet, festivals, sport, the role of women in society, and much else that he observed first-hand. The book is illustrated with drawings, and it concludes with a large fold-out topographical map, which shows the author's route in Kafiristan. In 1896 the ruler of Afghanistan, Amir 'Abd al-Rahman Khan (reigned 1880-1901), conquered the area and brought it under Afghan control. The Kafirs became Muslims and in 1906 the region was renamed Nuristan, meaning the "Land of Light," a reference to the enlightenment brought by Islam.

Book Encyclopedia of Snow Ice and Glaciers

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Snow Ice and Glaciers written by Vijay P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 1301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earth’s cryosphere, which includes snow, glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, ice shelves, sea ice, river and lake ice, and permafrost, contains about 75% of the earth’s fresh water. It exists at almost all latitudes, from the tropics to the poles, and plays a vital role in controlling the global climate system. It also provides direct visible evidence of the effect of climate change, and, therefore, requires proper understanding of its complex dynamics. This encyclopedia mainly focuses on the various aspects of snow, ice and glaciers, but also covers other cryospheric branches, and provides up-to-date information and basic concepts on relevant topics. It includes alphabetically arranged and professionally written, comprehensive and authoritative academic articles by well-known international experts in individual fields. The encyclopedia contains a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from the atmospheric processes responsible for snow formation; transformation of snow to ice and changes in their properties; classification of ice and glaciers and their worldwide distribution; glaciation and ice ages; glacier dynamics; glacier surface and subsurface characteristics; geomorphic processes and landscape formation; hydrology and sedimentary systems; permafrost degradation; hazards caused by cryospheric changes; and trends of glacier retreat on the global scale along with the impact of climate change. This book can serve as a source of reference at the undergraduate and graduate level and help to better understand snow, ice and glaciers. It will also be an indispensable tool containing specialized literature for geologists, geographers, climatologists, hydrologists, and water resources engineers; as well as for those who are engaged in the practice of agricultural and civil engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, ecosystem management, and other relevant subjects.

Book The Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment

Download or read book The Hindu Kush Himalaya Assessment written by Philippus Wester and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume is the first comprehensive assessment of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. It comprises important scientific research on the social, economic, and environmental pillars of sustainable mountain development and will serve as a basis for evidence-based decision-making to safeguard the environment and advance people’s well-being. The compiled content is based on the collective knowledge of over 300 leading researchers, experts and policymakers, brought together by the Hindu Kush Himalayan Monitoring and Assessment Programme (HIMAP) under the coordination of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD). This assessment was conducted between 2013 and 2017 as the first of a series of monitoring and assessment reports, under the guidance of the HIMAP Steering Committee: Eklabya Sharma (ICIMOD), Atiq Raman (Bangladesh), Yuba Raj Khatiwada (Nepal), Linxiu Zhang (China), Surendra Pratap Singh (India), Tandong Yao (China) and David Molden (ICIMOD and Chair of the HIMAP SC). This First HKH Assessment Report consists of 16 chapters, which comprehensively assess the current state of knowledge of the HKH region, increase the understanding of various drivers of change and their impacts, address critical data gaps and develop a set of evidence-based and actionable policy solutions and recommendations. These are linked to nine mountain priorities for the mountains and people of the HKH consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals. This book is a must-read for policy makers, academics and students interested in this important region and an essentially important resource for contributors to global assessments such as the IPCC reports.

Book Tribes of the Hindoo Koosh

Download or read book Tribes of the Hindoo Koosh written by John Biddulph and published by . This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The languages and social customs including the marriage customs of the many tribes that inhabit the Hindu Kush are the subject of this book. Included are tribes in Northern Pakistan, Eastern Afghanistan and India and to some extent Tajikistan. This amazing and under appreciated book covers a vast area not just limited to the present and agreed upon boundaries of the Hindu Kush, but well into the Himalayas in places such as Hunza and Ladakh. We now think of the Hindu Kush as being a range of mountains in North West Pakistan and Eastern Afghanistan and with the Himalayan Mountains starting in Eastern Pakistan including Kashmir and crossing Northern India, Nepal and Bhutan. This book discusses not only those tribes residing on the South side of these mountain ranges but also on the North side as well, covering such areas as the Oxus River Basin, now called the Amu Darya, the river that flows into the Aral Sea through such places as Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Going West, the book discusses not only Hunza but also Ladakh. This book is one of the few sources of information about that area, because Ladakh is entirely under Indian Control and outsiders are discouraged or prohibited from visiting. Interestingly, the women of Ladakh wear black robes somewhat similar to the black robes worn by the Kalash Women of Chitral, suggesting that there may be a historical connection between them. We learn a lot of amazing facts from this book. For example, in some tribes, the marriage night is spent in the home of the family of the bride. Only after some days is the groom allowed to take his new wife to their new home. In other tribes, the family of the bride takes her to her new husband's home and leaves her there. In yet other tribes, the bride is "driven" from her family home to the home of her new husband and she is told not to return to her parent's house. The purpose of this is to insure reproduction as the wife is allowed no complaints.

Book Proceedings of the Third International Hindu Kush Cultural Conference

Download or read book Proceedings of the Third International Hindu Kush Cultural Conference written by Israr-ud-Din and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is a compilation of selected papers presented at the Third International Hindu Kush Cultural Conference held in Chitral town from 26-30 August 1995. The conference was multi-disciplinary, aiming at increasing communication not only among local and international scholars, but also among academic disciplines. The volume emphasizes the geo-political as well as socio-cultural importance of the region and contains valuable recommendations for the future development of the region. The volume focuses on themes such as environmental problems and the need to conserve forests and soil erosion. The potential negative environmental and cultural consequences of development projects have also been discussed, and there are recommendations for development agencies to incorporate a cultural and environmental sensitivity component into their planning process. The volume will help to increase awareness of the fact that the natural/physical environments and cultural environments are intimately related. When the natural environment is degraded, the cultural environment is endangered.

Book Afghanistan Declassified

Download or read book Afghanistan Declassified written by Brian Glyn Williams and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 100,000 U.S. soldiers were deployed to Afghanistan at the height of the campaign, fighting the longest war in the nation's history. But what do Americans know about the land where this conflict is taking place? Many have come to have a grasp of the people, history, and geography of Iraq, but Afghanistan remains a mystery. Originally published by the U.S. Army to provide an overview of the country's terrain, ethnic groups, and history for American troops and now updated and expanded for the general public, Afghanistan Declassified fills in these gaps. Historian Brian Glyn Williams, who has traveled to Afghanistan frequently over the past decade, provides essential background to the war, tracing the rise, fall, and reemergence of the Taliban. Special sections deal with topics such as the CIA's Predator drone campaign in the Pakistani tribal zones, the spread of suicide bombing from Iraq to the Afghan theater of operations, and comparisons between the Soviet and U.S. experiences in Afghanistan. To Williams, a historian of Central Asia, Afghanistan is not merely a theater in the war on terror. It is a primeval, exciting, and beautiful land; not only a place of danger and turmoil but also one of hospitable villagers and stunning landscapes, of great cultural diversity and richness. Williams brings the country to life through his own travel experiences—from living with Northern Alliance Uzbek warlords to working on a major NATO base. National heroes are introduced, Afghanistan's varied ethnic groups are explored, key battles—both ancient and current—are retold, and this land that many see as only a frightening setting for prolonged war emerges in three dimensions.
