Book excerpt: The history of British agriculture in the first half of the twentieth century has focused on productivity and the contribution of the industry to feeding the nation in wartime. The 'national farm' has been the object of study and even where regional differences have been acknowledged the spotlight has been on the cereal producers of the south and east of Britain. Through a study of the county of Westmorland, this thesis turns attention to the pastoral areas of the north and west. It also shifts the focus from productivity to profitability and seeks to uncover the viability of fanning in terms of cash flow and profit. The study recognizes that the uplands are not homogenous and varying geography and micro climates mean units in close proximity offer different opportunities for production and profit. The study therefore analyses the financial outturns for three different upland zones which reflect the physical variations of the landscape and climate, and whilst acknowledging the wide range of factors contributing to financial results, the study identifies the broader patterns in the mosaic of detail. The research has revealed a reversal in fortunes for farmers in different upland locations over the study period. Prosperity moved down valley after 1929 as dairy production replaced sheep rearing as the farmers' insurance policy. The legislative intervention of the 1930s followed by wartime pricing and production policy further marginalised the upland hill farmer to leave him vulnerable to the catastrophic winter of 194 7 when disaster relief funding was required to prevent some abandoning their farms. Yet, the picture of upland farming was not one of unrelieved gloom and the research concurs with recent revisionist work on innovation and change in the interwar period. The study makes a regional contribution to revisionist national histories and shows that although war was good for the farming industry not all farmers had a good war.
