Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the premier sculptors of her generation in the Northwest, Hilda Morris (1911-1993) lived her artistic life in the center of the region's circle of avant-garde painters, sculptors, poets, and musicians. This is the first book to document her half-century-long career and presents Morris's highly individual abstract sculptures against the backdrop of artistic developments during the second half of the twentieth century. A part of the abstract expressionist movement, Morris's vigorous, gestural sculptures inspired by mythological and universal symbols were instrumental in introducing a rigorous, expansive thinking about abstraction to the Pacific Northwest community. As an account of her life and the first complete survey of her entire oeuvre - sculpture, painting, and drawing - this volume will be essential to an understanding of the period. Bruce Guenther, the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Art Museum, has organized and contributed to numerous international exhibitions of contemporary art. Dr. Susan Fillen-Yeh has published widely on American art and is the editor and author of Dandies: Fashion and Finesse in Art and Culture (2001). Sculptor David Curt Morris is based in New York, exhibits nationally, and has executed numerous public commissions. He is the son of Hilda and Carl Morris and serves as director and trustee for the Carl and Hilda Morris Foundation.

Book All Men are Brothers

Download or read book All Men are Brothers written by Nai'an Shi and published by . This book was released on 1933 with total page 1328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of a Chinese classic (14th Century) is the epic tale of a band of patriots in China during the latter part of Sung Dynasty and is considered by most to be one to the three or four greatest novels in Chinese literature. Shui hun chuan (water margin chronicles) is the adventure of a band of 108 outlaws (105 men and 3 women) struggling to help the Emperor rid himself of the despotic prime minister. Like Robin Hood, the bandit kings refer to themselves as the "gallant fraternity." They come out to harass the authorities and to attempt to solicit followers to overthrow a corrupt government in the name of the Emperor. Chocked full of ghosts, innkeepers who make hamburgers of their guests, giants of superhuman strength, beautiful women in distress, wily intellectuals and crafty merchants, this is a timeless tale of love and adventure.

Book Frankie Manning

Download or read book Frankie Manning written by Frankie Manning and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early days of swing dancing, Frankie Manning stood out for his moves and his innovative routines; he created the "air step" in the Lindy hop, a dance that took the U.S. and then the world by storm. In this fascinating autobiography, choreographer and Tony Award winner (Black and Blue) Frankie Manning recalls how his first years of dancing as a teenager at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom led to his becoming chief choreographer and a lead dancer for "Whitey's Lindy Hoppers," a group that appeared on Broadway, in Hollywood musicals, and on stages around the globe. Manning brings the Swing Era vividly back to life with his recollections of crowded ballrooms and of Lindy hoppers trying to outdo each other in spectacular performances. His memories of the many headliners and film stars, as well as uncelebrated dancers with whom he shared the stage, create a unique portrait of an era in which African American performers enjoyed the spotlight, if not a star's prerogatives and salary. With collaborator Cynthia Millman, Manning traces the evolution of swing dancing from its early days in Harlem through the post-World War II period, until it was eclipsed by rock 'n' roll and then disco. When swing made a comeback, Manning's 30-year hiatus ended. He has been performing, choreographing, and teaching ever since.

Book Dakota Tales

Download or read book Dakota Tales written by Melvin Christian Jensen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-01-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book began his life in 1912 amid conditions that have broken lesser spirits. He faced challenges and witnessed events that might have caused many to lose faith and become bitter. The spirit that shines through these extraordinary tales, however, is one of hope and and an undying faith life and the goodness of God. We are told of hardships and tragedies, not with pathos and complaint, but simply as situations that had to be met head-on with optimism, hard work, a firm confidence in his fellow human beings, and — perhaps his most characteristic trait — a sense of humor. Melvin Jensen witnessed and participated with gusto in the twentieth century as it unfolded in America’s heartland. He tells us many entertaining and personal tales of growing up in rural South Dakota and, in the process, shows us that the real heroes of our time are not necessarily those who make the ten o’clock news, but individuals who live “ordinary” lives with inner strength and courage.

Book Sir Walter Winterbottom The Father of Modern English Football

Download or read book Sir Walter Winterbottom The Father of Modern English Football written by Graham Morse and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Walter Winterbottom was arguably the most influential man in modern English football. He is known as the first England team manager, but more than that he was an innovator of modern coaching, sports administrator and a man ahead of his time; a man who had a profound effect on English football and who laid the foundations for England's success in 1966. Walter managed them all, from Lawton to Charlton, and inspired many to become coaches: Ron Greenwood, Bill Nicholson, Jimmy Hill and Bobby Robson were amongst his disciples and took his gospel to the clubs they managed. Born in 1913, Winterbottom started out as a teacher and physical education instructor, playing amateur football in his spare time. He was soon signed up by Manchester United, playing his first game 1936 and winning promotion to the First Division in 1938. A spinal ailment curtailed his career, but during World War II he served as an officer in the Royal Air Force before the FA appointed him as national director of coaching and England team manager in 1946.He remains the ony manager to have taken the national side to more than two World Cup finals and was created an OBE in 1963 and a CBE in 1972 before being knighted in 1978. Walter died in 2002 but his legacy continues to inspire many in football today, especially with the opening of the new St George's Park football academy. With interviews and insight from top football names, this book - written by Winterbottom's son-in-law - also draws on personal diaries, photographs and letters. However, this is more than just a biography of one man - it's the story of how modern football came about.
