Book Hilbert Spectra of Nonlinear Ocean Waves

Download or read book Hilbert Spectra of Nonlinear Ocean Waves written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) analysis interprets wave nonlinearity in terms of frequency modulation instead of harmonic generation. The resulting spectrum contains much higher spectral energy at low frequency and sharper drop off at high frequency in comparison with the spectra derived from Fourier-based analysis methods. The high energy level in the low-frequency components of the Hilbert Spectrum seems to be consistent with the rich group structure apparent in typical ocean-wave records. For wind-generated waves the spectral level of the Fourier spectrum is about two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the Hilbert spectrum at the first subharmonic of the peak frequency. The mean frequency of the Fourier spectrum is 20% higher than that of the Hilbert spectrum. Furthermore, the frequency of the wave groups is also more likely to be properly identified in the engineering and air-sea interaction arc discussed.

Book A Note on Analyzing Nonlinear and Nonstationary Ocean Wave Data

Download or read book A Note on Analyzing Nonlinear and Nonstationary Ocean Wave Data written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Huang-Hilbert transformation (HHT, composed of empirical mode decomposition and Hilbert transformation), can be applied to calculate the spectrum of nonlinear and nonstationary signals. The superior temporal and frequency resolutions of the HHT spectrum are illustrated by several examples in this article. The HHT analysis interprets wave nonlinearity in terms of frequency modulation instead of harmonic generation. The resulting spectrum contains much higher spectral energy at low frequency and sharper drop off at high frequency in comparison with the spectra derived from Fourier-based analysis methods (e.g., Fast Fourier Transforms and wavelet techniques). For wind-generated waves, the spectral level of the Fourier spectrum is about two orders of magnitude smaller than that of the HHT spectrum at the first subharmonic of the peak frequency. The resulting average frequency as defined by the normalized first momentum of the spectrum is about 1.2 times higher in the Fourier-based spectra than that of the HHT spectrum. (6 figures, 7 refs.).

Book Hilbert huang Transform And Its Applications

Download or read book Hilbert huang Transform And Its Applications written by Norden E Huang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-09-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) represents a desperate attempt to break the suffocating hold on the field of data analysis by the twin assumptions of linearity and stationarity. Unlike spectrograms, wavelet analysis, or the Wigner-Ville Distribution, HHT is truly a time-frequency analysis, but it does not require an a priori functional basis and, therefore, the convolution computation of frequency. The method provides a magnifying glass to examine the data, and also offers a different view of data from nonlinear processes, with the results no longer shackled by spurious harmonics — the artifacts of imposing a linearity property on a nonlinear system or of limiting by the uncertainty principle, and a consequence of Fourier transform pairs in data analysis. This is the first HHT book containing papers covering a wide variety of interests. The chapters are divided into mathematical aspects and applications, with the applications further grouped into geophysics, structural safety and visualization.

Book Nonlinear Ocean Waves and the Inverse Scattering Transform

Download or read book Nonlinear Ocean Waves and the Inverse Scattering Transform written by Alfred Osborne and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 200 years, the Fourier Transform has been one of the most important mathematical tools for understanding the dynamics of linear wave trains. Nonlinear Ocean Waves and the Inverse Scattering Transform presents the development of the nonlinear Fourier analysis of measured space and time series, which can be found in a wide variety of physical settings including surface water waves, internal waves, and equatorial Rossby waves. This revolutionary development will allow hyperfast numerical modelling of nonlinear waves, greatly advancing our understanding of oceanic surface and internal waves. Nonlinear Fourier analysis is based upon a generalization of linear Fourier analysis referred to as the inverse scattering transform, the fundamental building block of which is a generalized Fourier series called the Riemann theta function. Elucidating the art and science of implementing these functions in the context of physical and time series analysis is the goal of this book. Presents techniques and methods of the inverse scattering transform for data analysis Geared toward both the introductory and advanced reader venturing further into mathematical and numerical analysis Suitable for classroom teaching as well as research

Book Ocean Wave Data Analysis Using Hilbert Transform Techniques

Download or read book Ocean Wave Data Analysis Using Hilbert Transform Techniques written by Moisés M. Navarro and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel technique to determine the phase velocity of long-wavelength shoaling waves is investigated. Operationally, the technique consists of three steps. First, using the Hilbert transform of a time series, the phase of the analytic signal is determined. Second, the correlations of the phases of analytic signals between two points in space are calculated and an average time of travel of the wave fronts is obtained. Third, if directional spectra are available or can be determined from time series of large array of buoys, the angular information can be used to determine the true time of travel. The phase velocity is obtained by dividing the distance between buoys by the correlation time. Using the Hilbert transform approach, there is no explicit assumption of the relation between frequency and wavenumber of waves in the wave field, indicating that it may be applicable to arbitrary wave fields, both linear and nonlinear. Limitations of the approach are discussed.

Book Tsunami Data Assimilation for Early Warning

Download or read book Tsunami Data Assimilation for Early Warning written by Yuchen Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on proposing a tsunami early warning system using data assimilation of offshore data. First, Green’s Function-based Tsunami Data Assimilation (GFTDA) is proposed to reduce the computation time for assimilation. It can forecast the waveform at Points of Interest (PoIs) by superposing Green’s functions between observational stations and PoIs. GFTDA achieves an equivalently high accuracy of tsunami forecasting to the previous approaches, while saving sufficient time to achieve an early warning. Second, a modified tsunami data assimilation method is explored for regions with a sparse observation network. The method uses interpolated waveforms at virtual stations to construct the complete wavefront for tsunami propagation. Its application to the 2009 Dusky Sound, New Zealand earthquake, and the 2015 Illapel earthquake revealed that adopting virtual stations greatly improved the tsunami forecasting accuracy for regions without a dense observation network. Finally, a real-time tsunami detection algorithm using Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) is presented. The tsunami signals of the offshore bottom pressure gauge can be automatically separated from the tidal components, seismic waves, and background noise. The algorithm could detect tsunami arrival with a short detection delay and accurately characterize the tsunami amplitude. Furthermore, the tsunami data assimilation approach is combined with the real-time tsunami detection algorithm, which is applied to the tsunami of the 2016 Fukushima earthquake. The proposed tsunami data assimilation approach can be put into practice with the help of the real-time tsunami detection algorithm.

Book Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels

Download or read book Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels written by Alun Thomas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-10-08 with total page 2354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practising engineers on site, in the design office or in client organizations will find this book an excellent introduction to the design and construction of sprayed concrete lined (SCL) tunnels. The complex behaviour of the early age behaviour of the sprayed concrete requires careful management. This book covers all aspects of SCL tunnelling – from the constituents of sprayed concrete to detailed design and management during construction. Although there is a close interdependence between all the facets of sprayed concrete, few engineers have the right breadth of experience and expertise, and this urgently needs to be transferred to the wider engineering community. Disseminating essential information for tunnelling engineers, Sprayed Concrete Lined Tunnels is key reading for all involved in or studying the process.

Book Internal Gravity Waves in the Shallow Seas

Download or read book Internal Gravity Waves in the Shallow Seas written by Stanisław R. Massel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a comprehensive study of the internal ocean waves, which play a very important role in ocean physics providing mechanisms for ocean water mixing and circulation, as well as the transportation of gases, nutrients, and a very large number of marine organisms in the ocean body. In contrast to surface waves, the literature on internal waves is not so numerous, mainly due to the difficulties in experimental data collection and in the mathematical description of internal wave propagation. In this book, the basic mathematical principles, a physical description of the observed phenomena, and practical theoretical methods of determination of wave parameters as well as the original method of observation using moving sensors are presented. Special attention is paid to internal wave propagation over changing bottom topographies in shallow seas such as the Baltic Sea. The book is supplemented with an extended list of relevant and extended bibliographies, a subject index, and an author index.
