Book Highway Rockfall Research

Download or read book Highway Rockfall Research written by Bruce K. Stover and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project is directed at developing and demonstrating a system for cost effectively evaluating and prioritizing highway rockfall hazards statewide. This pilot study produced a prototype computer-based highway rockfall hazard ranking system - "CRASH", which can be used to identify those areas of the state's highway system which have the highest incidences of rockfall accidents, as well as any area which has had a reported rockfall accident since 1976. The existing Oregon rockfall hazard ranking system (ODOT system) was selected and studied to determine if it addressed the varied geologic as well as physical rockfall situations in Colorado. This system was adapted to suit the requirements of our prototype hazard ranking scheme. Implementation of the Highway Rockfall Hazard Evaluation system was demonstrated on five pre-selected areas. The mile in each area with the highest number of reported rockfall accidents, as determined by "CRASH", was ranked using the ODOT system

Book Rock Slope Engineering

Download or read book Rock Slope Engineering written by Duncan C. Wyllie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock Slope Engineering covers the investigation, design, excavation and remediation of man-made rock cuts and natural slopes, primarily for civil engineering applications. It presents design information on structural geology, shear strength of rock and ground water, including weathered rock. Slope design methods are discussed for planar, wedge, circular and toppling failures, including seismic design and numerical analysis. Information is also provided on blasting, slope stabilization, movement monitoring and civil engineering applications. This fifth edition has been extensively up-dated, with new chapters on weathered rock, including shear strength in relation to weathering grades, and seismic design of rock slopes for pseudo-static stability and Newmark displacement. It now includes the use of remote sensing techniques such as LiDAR to monitor slope movement and collect structural geology data. The chapter on numerical analysis has been revised with emphasis on civil applications. The book is written for practitioners working in the fields of transportation, energy and industrial development, and undergraduate and graduate level courses in geological engineering.

Book Partnerships for Reducing Landslide Risk

Download or read book Partnerships for Reducing Landslide Risk written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-15 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslides occur in all geographic regions of the nation in response to a wide range of conditions and triggering processes that include storms, earthquakes, and human activities. Landslides in the United States result in an estimated average of 25 to 50 deaths annually and cost $1 to 3 billion per year. In addition to direct losses, landslides also cause significant environmental damage and societal disruption. Partnerships for Reducing Landslide Risk reviews the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS)National Landslide Hazards Mitigation Strategy, which was created in response to a congressional directive for a national approach to reducing losses from landslides. Components of the strategy include basic research activities, improved public policy measures, and enhanced mitigation of landslides. This report commends the USGS for creating a national approach based on partnerships with federal, state, local, and non-governmental entities, and finds that the plan components are the essential elements of a national strategy. Partnerships for Reducing Landslide Risk recommends that the plan should promote the use of risk analysis techniques, and should play a vital role in evaluating methods, setting standards, and advancing procedures and guidelines for landslide hazard maps and assessments. This report suggests that substantially increased funding will be required to implement a national landslide mitigation program, and that as part of a 10-year program the funding mix should transition from research and guideline development to partnership-based implementation of loss reduction measures.

Book The ISRM Suggested Methods for Rock Characterization Testing and Monitoring 2007 2014

Download or read book The ISRM Suggested Methods for Rock Characterization Testing and Monitoring 2007 2014 written by R. Ulusay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of ISRM suggested methods for testing or measuring properties of rocks and rock masses both in the laboratory and in situ, as well as for monitoring the performance of rock engineering structures. The first collection (Yellow Book) has been published in 1981. In order to provide access to all the Suggested Methods in one volume, the ISRM Blue Book was published in 2007 (by the ISRM via the Turkish National Group) and contains the complete set of Suggested Methods from 1974 to 2006 inclusive. The papers in this most recent volume have been published during the last seven years in international journals, mainly in Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. They offer guidance for rock characterization procedures and laboratory and field testing and monitoring in rock engineering. These methods provide a definitive procedure for the identification, measurement and evaluation of one or more qualities, characteristics or properties of rocks or rock systems that produces a test result.
