Book The Politics of Racist Hegemony in Trinidad and Tobago

Download or read book The Politics of Racist Hegemony in Trinidad and Tobago written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a deconstruction of the political discourse of politicians in Trinidad and Tobago from the 1950's to the present. This deconstruction has revealed a discourse of racist hegemony is the basis for political mobilisation in Trinidad and Tobago as it frames a mental image of a hegemonic race wielding state power over a dominated race consigned to the wilderness of opposition politics. The resources of the state exist then for the benefit of the hegemonic race and those who conceive of self as belonging to races in competition for state resources must then do their political duty to ensure the hegemony of their race. Politics has nothing to do with governance, personal and social development.

Book Democracy and Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago

Download or read book Democracy and Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago written by Kirk Peter Meighoo and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean are all self-governing, determining their own futures. But some 40 years after gaining independence from Britain, the question remains whether these countries are truly democratic and whether the parliamentary and electoral systems adopted, are well suited to the Caribbean experience. Meighoo and Jamadar answer these questions in the negative. A true democracy, they argue, is one where the Legislature has the authority and the strength to make the Executive effectively accountable and responsible to it and where the electoral system results in the true practical separation of the Legislature and the Executive. Using Trinidad and Tobago as the model, Democracy and Constitution Reform in Trinidad and Tobago offers an overview of the constitutional reform process in the Commonwealth Caribbean. In these young, postcolonial democracies, where party politics have had a negative impact on the process of democratic reform, the authors review the historical, political and cultural motivations that have spawned the most recent debates on constitutional reform; and more particularly on the proposals for parliamentary and electoral reform. The book concludes with a review of past proposals and recommendations, and puts forward the authors' own suggestions for reform. At a time when most of the Commonwealth Caribbean is undergoing a process of constitutional debate and change, this book makes a valuable contribution to the discussion and provides a basis for the informed citizen, student or pundit to judge the process of reform. "

Book Simbhoonath Capildeo

Download or read book Simbhoonath Capildeo written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a deconstruction of the political discourse of Simbhoonath Capildeo the progenitor of Hindu nationalist discourse in Trinidad and Tobago. Capildeo's Hindu nationalism is premised upon a rootedness in Trinidad and Tobago, a fervent praxis premised on bhakti (devotion) towards creating a discourse of Sanatan Dharma that was relevant to life in the west as a Hindu that was sustainable, and finally a political praxis that was demonstrably anti- racist and egalitarian in the tradition of democratic socialism.

Book Constructing Democratic Governance

Download or read book Constructing Democratic Governance written by Jorge I. Domínguez and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Constructing Democratic Governance, Jorge I. Dominguez and Abraham F. Lowenthal bring together a distinguished group of scholars to assess how well democracy has been working in this volatile part of the world. The authors find that serious problems still plague these new democracies. Many of these problems are related to the political institutions, including political parties, the civil service, and the justice system. Part I introduces broad thematic surveys of such key issues as the role of the left, conservatism, inequality, and indigenous peoples. Part II reviews the South American nations. Part III focuses on Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, including Cuba. In Part IV, the volume editors draw conclusions about the problems and prospects for stable democracies in Latin America. In addition to the complete hardcover edition, Constructing Democratic Governance is available in three paperback volumes, each containing the introduction and conclusion from the complete edition and organized for convenient course use.

Book The Dynamics of Two Party Politics

Download or read book The Dynamics of Two Party Politics written by Alan Ware and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role played by the parties themselves in two-party systems. It rejects the argument that the behaviour of the parties is determined largely by social forces or by the supposed logic of the electoral market. Instead, it shows that both structure and agency can matter. It focuses on three major aspects of change in two-party systems: (i) why occasionally major parties ( such as the British Liberals) collapse; (ii) why collapsed parties sometimes survive as minor parties, and sometimes do not; and (iii) what determines why, and how, major parties will ally themselves with minor parties in order to maximize their chances of winning. With respect to the first aspect it is argued that major parties are advantaged by two factors: the resources they have accumulated already, and their occupying role similar to that called by Thomas Schelling a "focal arbiter". Consequently, party collapse is rare. When it has occurred in nation states it is the result of a major party having to fight opposition on "two separate fronts". The survival of a collapsed party depends largely on its internal structure; when a party has linked closely the ambitions of politicians at different levels of office, party elimination is more likely. The main arena in which agency is significant - that is, when leadership is possible, including the politician acting as heresthetician - is in the re-building of coalitions. This is necessary for maximizing the chances of a party winning, but, for various reasons, coalitions between major and minor parties are usually difficult to construct. Comparative Politics is a series for scholars and students of political science that deals with contemporary issues in comparative government and politics. The General Editor is David M. Farrell, Jean Monnet Chair in European Politics and Head of School of Social Sciences, University of Manchester. The series is published in association with the European Consortium for Political Research.

Book Tubal Uriah Butler of Trinidad and Tobago Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana

Download or read book Tubal Uriah Butler of Trinidad and Tobago Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana written by Daurius Figueira and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work explodes myths on the decolonization process in former British colonies of Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana. Myths that masked the fact that the British colonial overlord with the full support of their local lackeys stage managed the process to ensure that compliant regimes were put in place as the inheritors of Independence from the British. Tubal Uriah Butler was systematically destroyed as a political leader to end his threat to the political order as he was not of the required material to be an inheritor of Independence. Kwame Nkrumah was fit to rule Ghana but he was subsequently removed in 1966. The social orders of Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana have been deeply impacted by British machinations on the road to Independence to this day.
