Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials deformed at high strain rates exhibit sometimes the behaviour that is very different from that at static or quasi-static loading. Material and physical properties that are of no concern in low strain rates become crucial in the material response at high strain rates. Material properties such as thermal diffusivity and thermal softening have to be considered in order to understand the mechanism of deformation at high strain rates. The most important aspect of high strain rate deformation is the occurrence of local thermal and mechanical instability that leads to failure of the material, usually characterised by the occurrence of adiabatic shear bands (ASB). In this study, AISI 4140 steel was tested using a torsional split Hopkinson bar at three different strain rates and the impact of strain rate on the material behaviour was examined. The influence of material hardness on failure mechanisms was also investigated by producing different tempers of 4140 steel with distinct microstructures and different hardness. The fracture surface of specimens was examined under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Mechanical twinning in the narrow sense (regular. symmetrical lattice reorientation in response to me chanical stress) was for many years a specialist topic for mineralogists. petrographers. and crystallographers. Mineralogists and crystallographers carried out the study of the basic geometrical relationships in twinning; the principal names here are MUgge, Niggli. Johnsen. Reusch. Baumhauer. Churchman. Wallerant. Evans. and FriedeL The laws of mechanical twinning are now widely used in mineral identification and in elucidating the conditions of formation of rocks from the minerals they contain. The distribution of the twin bands in rock forming minerals enables one to establish the later processes that have occurred in the rock. Mechanical twinning is discussed by geOlogiSts and petrologists in the analYSis of flow effects. The importance of mechanical twinning in the plastic deformation and rupture of crystalline solids was W stressed by Academician V.I. Vernadskii in 1897 and by Kirpicheva ina paper entitled WFatigue in Metals in 1914.

The results of smooth and notch tensile tests indicated that significant strain aging effects occurred in most high-strength steels in the 300 F to 800 F temperature range and this behavior was analogous to "blue brittleness" in mild steels. Constant load, stress rupture tests were conducted on the steels to determine the possible relationship between strain-aging embrittlement and delayed failure. Only the 300 M steel tested at 400 F exhibited an appreciable degree of delayed failure. This embrittlement, was extremely sensitive to test environment and was elimiriated when tests were conducted in argon. Although strain aging was not a sufficient condition to initiate delayed failure, it appeared to increase the severity of the environmental effects in the particular range where sufficient interstitial mobility existed.

Book excerpt: The mechanical response of a pearlitic UHCS-1.3C steel deformed at approximately 4000 s{sup -1} to large strains ({var_epsilon} = -0.9) has been studied. Failure, at both the macroscopic and the microscopic levels has been evaluated, and the ability of the material to absorb energy in compression has been examined. Failure occurred by the development of a shear band. However before failure, extensive buckling of the carbide plates was observed and the UHCS-1.3C material exhibited significant potential for compressive ductility and energy absorption due to the distributed buckling of these plates. Strain localization during adiabatic shear band development resulted in the formation of austenite. Subsequent cooling produced a divorced-eutectoid transformation with associated deformation, which resulted in a microstructure consisting of 50 to 100 nm sized grains. The stress-strain behavior within the shear band has also been determined. The results are used to critically evaluate the maximum shear stress criterion of shear band development. New criteria for the development of shear bands are developed based on a strain energy concept.

The influence of three different heat treatments, which resulted in pearlitic, martensitic and tempered martensitic microstructures, on the stress-strain response has also been examined. Failure, at both the macroscopic and the microscopic levels, and the ability of the material to absorb energy in compression have been evaluated. Failure for all heat treatments occurred due to shear localization. However, in the pearlitic condition, extensive buckling of the carbide plates was observed and the UHCS-1.3C material exhibited significant potential for compressive ductility (>60%) and energy absorption due to the distributed buckling of these plates. In the pearlitic condition, localization occurred due to adiabatic shear bands, in which austenite formed. Subsequent cooling produced a divorced-eutectoid transformation with associated deformation, which resulted in a microstructure consisting of 50 to 100 nm sized grains. The results show the large potential for use of UHCS in applications involving dynamic loading.
