Book High Performance Liquid Chromatography in Endocrinology

Download or read book High Performance Liquid Chromatography in Endocrinology written by H.L.J. Makin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originates from a symposium held at the London Hospital Medical College under the auspices of Applied Chromatography Systems Ltd. to discuss the place of HPLC in the endocrinology field. Many of the authors of the present book were speakers at this symposium. It seemed to us that many endocrinolo gists did not at that time fully appreciate the value of HPLC, and this book was designed to publicise the potential value of this technique. A survey of methods used in the steroid field Cp 185) confirmed the view that HPLC is not being used as widely, particularly in research described in clinical journals, as might be expected. We hope that this book will illustrate, albeit in a few selected areas of endocrinology, just how versatile and powerful a technique HPLC is, and en courage those who have not yet experienced it to have a go. The beginner does not need to buy expensive instrumentation - all that is required is a pump, injector, column and detector - the rest can come later! All the authors have practical experience in the use of HPLC in the particular area they discuss. All readers who discover apparent errors or who feel that the treatment of a topic of interest can be improved upon are encouraged to contact the editors. All criti cism, especially if constructive, is welcomed. We are still learning, and other peoples' experience is always valuable.

Book Research Methods in Neurochemistry

Download or read book Research Methods in Neurochemistry written by Neville Marks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ever, the introduction of new methods or techniques serves to stimulate progress into understanding the structure and function of the nervous system. This axiom is exemplified by recent techniques that have revolutionized several branches of neurochemistry and promise to remain dominant for many years. Such developments underscore the need to remain abreast of new research strategies and provide further justification for the present series. The use of high performance liquid chromatography combined with bioassay methods provides a powerful technique for iso lation and assay of trace amounts of neuropeptides. Two chapters in the present volume deal with this subject: one (Stenn and Lewis) describes the assay of enkephalins, and the other (Chretien and Seidah), on lipo tropic peptides, includes procedures for structural analysis by microse quencing. These methods rival earlier ones for peptide separations in speed, sensitivity, and cost and have general applicability in most labo ratories. High performance liquid chromatography has also largely sup planted earlier and more tedious procedures for the assay of catechola mines, as described in Chapter 7 by Causon. As in earlier volumes, we have striven to retain a balance between studies on intact tissues and those on subcellular components.

Book High Performance Liquid Chromatography in Plant Sciences

Download or read book High Performance Liquid Chromatography in Plant Sciences written by Hans-Ferdinand Linskens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Methods of Plant Analysis When the handbook Modern Methods of Plant Analysis was first introduced in 1954 the considerations were: 1. the dependence of scientific progress in biology on the improvement of existing and the introduction of new methods; 2. the difficulty in finding many new analytical methods in specialized journals which are normally not accessible to experimental plant biologists; 3. the fact that in the methods sections of papers the description of methods is frequently so compact, or even sometimes so incomplete that it is difficult to reproduce experiments. These considerations still stand today. The series was highly successful, seven volumes appearing between 1956 and 1964. Since there is still today a demand for the old series, the publisher has decided to resume publication of Modern Methods of Plant Analysis. It is hoped that the New Series will be just as acceptable to those working in plant sciences and related fields as the early volumes undoubtedly were. It is difficult to single out the major reasons for success of any publication, but we believe that the methods published in the first series were up-to-date at the time and presented in a way that made description, as applied to plant material, complete in itselfwith little need to consult other publications. Contributing authors have attempted to follow these guidelines in this New Series of volumes.

Book High temperature Liquid Chromatography

Download or read book High temperature Liquid Chromatography written by Thorsten Teutenberg and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2010 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-temperature liquid chromatography has attracted much interest in recent years but has not yet recognized its full potential in the chromatographic community. There is a widespread reluctance in industry to use temperature to speed up the separation process, influence the selectivity of a separation or implement novel detection techniques. However, the technology has now matured and could revolutionize chromatography as we see it today. Better equipment, such as heating systems able to generate faster heating rates, is becoming more readily available. Also, columns based on silica gel, which can withstand higher temperatures for an extended period, are now being introduced. Nevertheless, further technological and methodical efforts are needed to establish the method in a regulated environment like the pharmaceutical industry. This is the only text to cover all the practical aspects, as well as the underlying theoretical principles, of setting up an HPLC system for high-temperature operation. It is not intended solely for academics but will also benefit the researcher interested in more practical considerations. The author is a recognized expert and has conducted several studies with partners from industry to validate the method. Many real examples from these studies have been included in the book. The aim is to support practitioners in the creation of their own protocols without the need to rely solely on trial and error. The book starts with a brief definition of high-temperature liquid chromatography before going on to cover: system set up; the heating system; mobile phase considerations; suitable stationary phases; method development using temperature programming; analyte stability, and special hyphenation techniques using superheated water as a mobile phase. In each chapter, experimental data is used to illustrate the main statements and the advantages over conventional HPLC are evaluated. The book concludes with a critical outlook on further developments and applications underlining the necessary advances needed to make high-temperature HPLC more robust.

Book High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Download or read book High Performance Liquid Chromatography written by Heinz Engelhardt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern liquid column chromatography (LC) has developed rapidly since 1969 to become a standard method of separation. If the statisticians are to be believed, the recent growth of LC has been the most specta cular development in analytical chemistry and has not yet abated be cause its vast potential for application remains to be fully exploit ed. Significant factors contributing to this continued rise are the simplicity and low cost of the required basic equipment and the rela tive ease of acquiring and interpreting the data. Unfortunately, in LC, as so often in the field of analytical chemistry, the available commercial instruments are frequently far more complicated - and consequently far more expensive - than is nec essary for routine application. Therein also lies the risk of propa gating a "black box" philosophy that would be particularly detrimen tal to chromatography. Moreover, it appears to have been forgotten, as was done previously with gas chromatography, that inadequate sep aration by a column can be remedied only with great difficulty, if at all, by electronic means. Also, whether the capillary columns recent ly advocated with great enthusiasm for LC will fulfill the expecta tions of their proponents is highly questionable unless someone comes up with some new and revolutionary ideas.
