Book excerpt: The state of the Netherlands as an example of the contemporary western condition. The ideological vacuum created by the collapse of the bipolar world in 1989 was not filled by any new emancipatory political imaginary. Instead, the demands of 'national security', the normalization of violence and the maintenance of high levels of fear and anxiety have become part of daily life in nations of the West. How can art and artists react to these changes and what possibilities can they create to see sings differently? Contributions by artists, philosophers and social scientists in the Netherlands.

Book Self Regulated Learning in Technology Enhanced Learning Environments

Download or read book Self Regulated Learning in Technology Enhanced Learning Environments written by Roberto Carneiro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-regulated learning (SRL) subsumes key aspects of the learning process, such as cognitive strategies, metacognition and motivation, in one coherent construct. Central to this construct are the autonomy and responsibility of students to take charge of their own learning. Skills for self-regulation can be encouraged both directly and indirectly through a range of learning activities. In this book we look specifically at the ways in which technology enhanced learning environments (TELEs) have been used to support self-regulation. The book provides an overview of recent studies on SRL in TELEs in Europe – a perspective which is new and has not been articulated hitherto. It addresses conceptual and methodological questions as well as practices in technology enhanced learning. While the focus is on European studies, we are aware that much of the groundwork in the field of SRL has emanated from the United States. The book is divided into three parts: (A) Foundations of SRL in TELEs, (B) Empirical studies on SRL in TELEs and (C) SRL in TELEs: perspectives on future developments. The book presents a rich resource of information for researchers and educators at all levels who are interested in supporting the acquisition of SRL through TELEs.

Book Plant Nutrition for Sustainable Food Production and Environment

Download or read book Plant Nutrition for Sustainable Food Production and Environment written by Tadao Ando and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 975 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of the International Plant Nutrition Colloquium from its first meeting in 1954, this meeting, the 13th Colloquium, is the first to be held in Asia and will be the last in the 20th century. The 20th century has seen huge changes in the number and activities of mankind. Our population has increased from around 1. 7 billion to more than 5. 8 billion and technological innovations have completely altered our way of living. As a consequence of such rapid change, we are facing many problems including changes in our environment of a global scale. But, while food shortage has been a serious concern to mankind throughout our history, serious food shortages in the 20th century have been confined to limited times and areas. As Lester Brown discusses in this volume, farmers have increased food production heroically on demand. We, the plant nutritionists should be proud of our support to the world's farmers which has helped them make their achievement possible. During the 20th century, the science of plant nutrition also has achieved great progress as described by Jack Loneragan; it became established as a discipline firmly based in science, defined the chemical elements supporting plant growth, and has contributed to improvements in plant production and environmental quality, as readers will find in many contributions in this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reality does not comply with our narrations of it. And that is most certainly the case with the narrations produced in academia. An anthropologist in Bahia, Brazil, fears to become possessed by the spirits he had come to study; falls madly in love withan 'informant'; finds himself baffled by the sayings of a clairvoyant; and has to come to grips with the murder of one of his best friends. Unsettling events that do not belong to the orderly world of scientific research, yet leave their imprint on the way the anthropologist comes to understand the world. REflecting on his long research experience with the spirit possession cult Candomblâe, the author shows, in a probing manner, how definitions of reality always require the exclusion of certain perceptions, experiences and insights. And yet, this 'rest-of-what-is' turns out to be an inexhaustible source of amazement, seduction and renewal." --P [4] of cover.

Book Evaluation in Planning

Download or read book Evaluation in Planning written by E.R. Alexander and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation is a critical stage in urban and regional planning and development, with the consideration of alternative proposals essential for informed debate and decision. Evaluation in planning has become even more important with the new paradigm attempting to integrate economic efficiency with equity, sustainability and social responsibility. The craft of pre-development evaluation has long been influenced by Nathaniel Lichfield, and in his honour, this book brings together prominent researchers and practitioners to discuss evaluation in planning: its conceptual foundations and subsequent development, its strengths and persisting dilemmas, and its best practices and their potential for improving future planning and development. The chapters trace evaluation in planning from its historical origin to current applications. Part one reviews the evolution of evaluation theory and practice, and part two contains a selection of best-practice application. The final integrating chapter notes key problems, and offers directions for future development in evaluation research and practice.
