Book excerpt: When Booker Krane retired early from his career as a white collar corporate investigator, he was sure of only two things: he was done digging up buried secrets, and he loved being near water. After recovering from the bullet wound dealt him in his final case, Booker settles into a leisurely lifestyle at his new home on Turtle Lake - including a new part-time job as a freelance photographer. But the morning his dog drags a dead body ashore, Booker and his camera are commandeered by Sheriff Ringhoffer, and in less time than it takes the elusive perfect lighting to disappear, he's deeply embroiled in the investigation. While the deceased, a prominent yet powerfully wicked man, had many people with motive and opportunity to kill him, Booker wants to believe Chuck Fowler's death was an accident. An arrow would be an unusual murder weapon, and he can't picture any of the suspects - the victim's wife, sons, business partner, sexy mistress, or attractive lessee - as cold-hearted killers. As it turns out, more than one of them knows how to draw a bowstring, and Booker's curious mind can't ignore the evidence against the victim falling on his own arrow - even when the sheriff rules the death an accident. Putting his own life at risk, can Booker solve the case and return to his idyllic existence at Lakeside Estates along with his budding attraction for one of the suspects? Or will magazine deadlines and tension with his only son interfere with his search for the truth?

Book Here Lies Arthur

Download or read book Here Lies Arthur written by Philip Reeve and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the dark side of Camelot. The acclaimed author of Mortal Engines delivers a “powerfully inventive” re-creation of the King Arthur tale (Booklist, starred review). Gwynna is just a girl who is forced to run when her village is attacked and burns to the ground. To her horror, she is discovered, but it is Myrddin the bard, a traveler and spinner of tales, who has found her. He agrees to protect Gwynna if she will agree to be bound in service to him. Gwynna is frightened but intrigued, for this Myrddin serves the young, rough, and powerful Arthur. In the course of their travels, Myrddin transforms Gwynna into the mysterious Lady of the Lake, a boy warrior, and a spy. It is part of a plot to transform Arthur from the leader of a ragtag war-band into King Arthur, the greatest hero of all time. If Gwynna and Myrrdin’s trickery is discovered, what will become of Gwynna? Worse, what will become of Arthur? Only the endless battling, the mighty belief of men, and the sheer cunning of one remarkable girl will tell. “Nodding to canon and history while not particularly following either Reeve, like Myrddin, turns hallowed myth and supple prose to political purposes, neatly skewering the modern-day cult of spin and the age-old trickery behind it. Smart teens will love this.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Is there room for yet another reworking of the Arthur legend? If it’s this one, yes . . . Absorbing, thought-provoking and unexpectedly timely.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A multilayered tour de force for mature young readers.” —School Library Journal

Book The Spots of the Godly and of the Wicked

Download or read book The Spots of the Godly and of the Wicked written by Jeremiah Burroughs and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this present work, Jeremiah Burroughs deals both kindly and forcibly with a peculiar angle on the doctrine of sin and sanctification. In comparing the manner in which the unconverted sin in parallel to the manner in which saints still sin, even the best of saints, Burroughs explains how sin affects these two groups, and how God deals with both as a result. He works masterfully from Deuteronomy 32:5, “Their spot is not the spot of his children.” The wicked have spots. The godly have spots. But the nature of these spots is what makes these sermons so powerful and utterly practical for the saint who understands the ways of Christ and God in their own sanctification. The spots of the wicked are not like the spots of the righteous. Burroughs explains why this is the case. The reader will be left to read to find out “why”. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Download or read book The Binding of Isaac written by Omri Boehm and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-07-20 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional interpertations in both Judaism and Christianity argue that the Akedah presents not only an ethical question but also an ethical reply. But for the intervention of the angel, Abraham would have killed his son. Obedience to God take precedence over morality as humanly conceived. Yet, the angel of YHWH that appears to Abraham is a later addition to the text; thus, in the original narrative Abraham actually disobeys the divine command to slay his son, and sacrifices a ram instead. The first part of the book shows how the "original" version of the narrative did not contain the angelic figure. The second part of the book re-examines various religious interpretations of the text to show that exegetes such as Maimonides and his followers did point out Abraham's disobedience. According to these writers the esoteric layer of the story in fact declares that disobedience to God's command was Abraham's true affirmation of faith. In th ethird part of the book, Boehm re-opens the philosophical debate between Kant and Kierkegaard. Boehm concludes the book by contending that the monotheistic model of faith presented by Abraham was actually a model of disobedience.
