Book Chikamatsu

Download or read book Chikamatsu written by C. Andrew Gerstle and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-04 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653-1725), often referred to as "Japan's Shakespeare" and a "god of writers," was arguably the most famous playwright in Japanese history and wrote more than 100 plays for the kabuki and bunraku theaters. Today, the plays of this major literary figure are performed on kabuki and bunraku stages as well as in the modern theater, and forty-nine films of his plays have been made, thirty-one of them from the silent era. Translations of Chikamatsu's plays are available, but we have few examples of his late work, in which he increasingly incorporated stylistic elements of his shorter, contemporary dramas into his longer period pieces. Translator C. Andrew Gerstle argues that in these mature history plays, Chikamatsu depicted the tension between the private and public spheres of society by combining the rich character development of his contemporary pieces with the larger political themes of his period pieces. In this volume Gerstle translates five plays—four histories and one contemporary piece—never before available in English that complement other collections of Chikamatsu's work, revealing new dimensions to the work of this great Japanese playwright and artist.

She never expected to fall for a young cowboy during her horseback riding lessons. There was no way that she would sacrifice her well planned life for a long distance relationship with a guy she’d only known for two weeks! Now, after a bitter divorce, Andria returns to the V-Bar Guest Ranch, and is surprised to find that not only did Jake Walker still work on the ranch; he was running the place. The last thing she needs is another disruption, and re-treating herself to a fling with an old lover is not the way to relax and regroup. It was a good thing she’d have help resisting his charm, thanks to Jake’s wife. Time for a hasty Retreat.

Book Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan 3 Vols

Download or read book Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan 3 Vols written by James Tod and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 2102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Website: www.mlbd.co.in Email: [email protected] This work relates to the (erstwhile) Central and the Western Rajput States of India. It embodies the results of scholarly investigation into the ethnology of Rajputs, their religious and social practices, their festivals and rites, their legal and political institutions and the merits and demerits of their characters. Herein we get a real portrait of the different aspects of Rajput life: their loyalty, devotion, gallantry, chivalry as also the instability of their character, their outbreaks of passion, fears, occasional faithlessness of their chiefs and allies and, above all, their addiction to drugs. The work is divided into three volumes: each volume being sub-divided into books and chapters. Vol I deals mostly with the Geography of Rajasthan, the History of the Rajput tribes and the feudal system of their states. Vol II contains the Annals of Marwar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and other cities of Rajasthan. Vol III comprises the annals of Amber, Haravati, Bundi and describes Shaikhawat Federation, and contains personal narratives from Udaipur to Kheroda. It has an appendix divided into seven sections and an exhaustive general index. Interspersed with several illustrations, this book is remarkable for its enlightening introduction and exegetical notes.
