This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. FINDING A FRIEND. T ASPER did not take long to get from the harbour to the .J little village of Charlton, then a quiet place out in the fields, now a populous suburb of the great thriving town of Dover, with its thirty thousand inhabitants. The leather case was light on his shoulder, for was it not a case of books ? and Jasper had such respect for learning, that to be allowed to fetch and carry for a student was happiness enough for him. As he passed the tiny church on his way to the Rectory he heard a low murmur, and turning back he saw that the door was open. He turned into the low dark church and felt at once the atmosphere of peace and calm which reigned within. Cool and refreshing to both body and spirit, he gave himself up to that quiet influence. The Rector's voice was saying Evensong. There was no choir, no acolyte, no pomp or show of any sort or kind, for the ancient worship had been shorn of all its outward glory, but the voice went on in simple majesty, a protest against hurry and worldliness. Jasper was naturally a devout lad, but he had been hurried and excited by all the strange scenes he had witnessed, and he scarcely entered into the spirit of the service, for his thoughts were in a whirl, but he felt soothed and quieted. He knelt for a moment, and then joined outwardly with the rest, though he hardly knew what he wasdoing. The little church bore evident marks of the great change which had taken place in the days of Edward VI. The chancel screen was still left, and the cross still towered in the midst of it, but the figure on the cross had been rudely torn off, and the figures of S. Mary and S. John, which had once stood on each side, had been struck off as with the blows of a hatchet. One foot had been left of S. John, and the two feet and ...

Book The Letters of Queen Victoria A Selection From Her Majesty s Correspondence Between the Years 1837 and 1861 Complete

Download or read book The Letters of Queen Victoria A Selection From Her Majesty s Correspondence Between the Years 1837 and 1861 Complete written by Queen of Great Britain Victoria and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 2808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entrusted by His Majesty the King with the duty of making a selection from Queen Victoria's correspondence, we think it well to describe briefly the nature of the documents which we have been privileged to examine, as well as to indicate the principles which have guided us throughout. It has been a task of no ordinary difficulty. Her Majesty Queen Victoria dealt with her papers, from the first, in a most methodical manner; she formed the habit in early days of preserving her private letters, and after her accession to the Throne all her official papers were similarly treated, and bound in volumes. The Prince Consort instituted an elaborate system of classification, annotating and even indexing many of the documents with his own hand. The result is that the collected papers form what is probably the most extraordinary series of State documents in the world. The papers which deal with the Queen's life up to the year 1861 have been bound in chronological order, and comprise between five and six hundred volumes. They consist, in great part, of letters from Ministers detailing the proceedings of Parliament, and of various political memoranda dealing with home, foreign, and colonial policy; among these are a few drafts of Her Majesty's replies. There are volumes concerned with the affairs of almost every European country; with the history of India, the British Army, the Civil List, the Royal Estates, and all the complicated machinery of the Monarchy and the Constitution. There are letters from monarchs and royal personages, and there is further a whole series of volumes dealing with matters in which the Prince Consort took a special interest. Some of them are arranged chronologically, some by subjects. Among the most interesting volumes are those containing the letters written by Her Majesty to her uncle Leopold, King of the Belgians, and his replies.1 The collection of letters from and to Lord Melbourne forms another hardly less interesting series. In many places Queen Victoria caused extracts, copied from her own private Diaries, dealing with important political events or describing momentous interviews, to be inserted in the volumes, with the evident intention of illustrating and completing the record.

So he read the runes - and found himself on a world where reciting poetry verses worked magic. His first effort got him locked in a dungeon by the evil sorcerer Malingo. Trying for light, he brought forth a fire-breathing, drunken dragon, who told him Princess Alisande, rightful ruler of Merovence, was also held in the dungeon. Naturally, he had to free her, himself, and the dragon, using poetry lifted from Shakespeare. And because she was young and beautiful, he swore to serve as her wizard. Then he learned that his job as wizard was to fix it so the three of them could overcome all the dark magic and armies of Malingo! The addition to the party of a lust-witch and a priest who became a werewolf now and then didn't seem much help. Matt figured he had got himself into quite a predicament. For once, he was right! This 25th anniversary eBook edition includes a new introduction by the author and new cover art.
