Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is clearly an age-related disease. Recent research in both aging and cancer has demonstrated the complex interaction between the two phenomena. This affects a wide spectrum of research and practice, anywhere from basic research to health care organization. Core examples of these close associations are addressed in this book. Starting with basic research, the first chapters cover cancer development, mTOR inhibition, senescent cells altering the tumor microenvironment, and immune senescence affecting cancer vaccine response. Taking into account the multidisciplinarity of geriatric oncology, several chapters focus on geriatric and oncologic aspects in patient assessment, treatment options, nursing and exercise programs. The book is rounded off by a discussion on the impact of the metabolic syndrome illustrating the interactions between comorbidity and cancer and a chapter on frailty. This book provides the reader with insights that will hopefully foster his or her reflection in their own research and practice to further the development of this most exciting field. Given the aging of the population worldwide and the high prevalence of cancer, it is essential reading not only for oncologists and geriatricians but for all health practitioners.

Book Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders

Download or read book Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders written by Sa A. Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms that initially present as peripheral blood abnormalities, with either cytopenias or elevated peripheral blood counts, as well as non-neoplastic conditions that may raise concern for a hematologic malignancy. The scope of the book includes myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), mixed myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN), as well as lymphomas and lymphoid leukemias that typically present initially with peripheral blood abnormalities. Within each category, a comprehensive list of differential diagnoses is discussed. For each disease entity, the reader is updated with new molecular genetic data, biomarkers, and recent applications of immunophenotyping, and how to incorporate the new information in disease diagnosis and classifications is illustrated, including the use of diagnostic algorithms where appropriate. The book employs the revised WHO Classification of Hematopoietic Neoplasms for all disease entities. Diagnosis of Blood and Bone Marrow Disorders will serve as a very useful resource for pathologists, pathologists in training, hematologists and medical technologists who are involved in the clinical work-up of patients with bone marrow and blood neoplasms. It will provide a practical and concise yet comprehensive review.

Book Hematopoiesis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leonard I. Zon
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-04-12
  • ISBN : 9780199771752

Download or read book Hematopoiesis written by Leonard I. Zon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-12 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hematopoiesis, or the process of blood formation, has been extensively studied at both basic and clinical levels. Human diseases such as thalassemia, immunodeficiency, and leukemia represent defects in this process. Approaches to treat these disorders have required a basic understanding of the biology of blood cells. For instance, hemapoietic stem cell replacement or bone marrow transplantation has been used to ameliorate disease. This volume focuses on hematopoiesis at a cellular and molecular level, and establishes the basis for clinical manipulation of hematopoietic cells for therapeutic benefit. In Part I, the cellular characteristics of progenitors and stem cells are explored. Emphasis is placed on purification of stem cells and both in vitro and in vivo assays. The regulation of normal and leukemis stem cells is illustrated. An excellent discussion of potential use of these cells for gene therapy concludes this section. Hemapoiesis is easily studied during embryogenesis. Part II develops the concept of the waves of hemapoiesis during development. Comparative hematology is making a major comeback as a field in the 1990's. One hope is that general principles of hematopoiesis will be established by studying many models and systems. Part III delves into critical factors that regulate hematopoiesis, including both intracellular and extracellular signals. Part IV and V describe lineage programs for myeloid and lymphoid lineages. These chapters are meant to be illustrative of the different cell fates, but are not exhaustive. Part VI examines the genetics of hematopoisis, particularly in animal models. The hematopoietic system is in constant contact with stromal cells and endothelial cells during development and in the adult. Evidence suggests that endothelial cells and blood cells may arise from a common progenitor, the hemangioblast. Part VII and VIII discuss the stromal and endothelial cells with the emphasis on their interaction with hematopoietic cells.

Book Recent Developments in Myelodysplastic Syndromes

Download or read book Recent Developments in Myelodysplastic Syndromes written by Ota Fuchs and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-02-20 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the rapid progress in the area of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). MDS are a group of age-associated heterogeneous malignant bone marrow stem cell disorders. MDS are characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, which leads to refractory cytopenias and to clonal instability. Patients with MDS have myeloid dysplasia, intramedullary apoptosis and an increased risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The use of next generation sequencing has allowed for the identification of molecular mutations in several genes in about 90% of MDS patients. Several mutations will likely be incorporated into future prognostic scoring systems for MDS. About 50% of MDS cases are characterized by the presence of cytogenetic abnormalities. The correct morphological and cytogenetic analysis interpretation plays an important role in diagnosis and prognosis of these disorders. Cell death and an inflammatory gene signature are associated with MDS. Better understanding of the genetic and molecular mechanisms of MDS pathogenesis provides an opportunity for new treatment strategies to be developed. Promising novel therapies targeting pathophysiological mechanisms of MDS are being studied but the drugs currently used in MDS therapy remain limited. The only curative therapy for MDS is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Recent advances in strategies to minimize transplant-related toxicity make this treatment possible for more MDS patients who are sufficiently fit.
