Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eternity in the Heart: And Other Sermons WE thank God that He has required so much of us He has'not dealt with us as if we were incompetent, but He has dealt with us as if we were greatly competent for greatest things. The things God asks of us ennoble us He wants us to love Him; He wants us to love the world; He wants us to plow the world's fields, and dig the world's gardens; He wants us to plant seeds and plow them; He wants us to gather in harvests and thresh them; He wants us to walk, not like children of the darkness nor the night, but like children of the light and of the day. Pl! E are folks that belong to the day-dawns, - that is what He has told us. Our candles are lighted by the stars and the sun as well. He has asked us to go on the Highway of Holiness, and keep to it; He has assumed that we had wisdom, and that we had discretion, and great powers. He has told us we were houses for God to live in. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Speaking to the Heart: Or Sermons for the People "Gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not." - Hosea vii. 9. Fire low - the order which generals have often given to their men before fighting began - suits the pulpit not less than the battle-field. The mistake common both to soldiers and speakers is to shoot too high, over people's heads; missing, by a want of directness and plainness, both the persons they preach to and the purpose they preach for. So did not the prophet Nathan, when, having told his story of the little ewe lamb, and kindled David's indignation, he fixed his eyes on the king to say, Thou art the man. So did not the Baptist, when, recognising in the crowd Pharisees swollen with pride and rich with the spoil of orphans, he cried, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? And, though with speech less blunt and rude and unpolite withal, as some might say, so did not the great apostle of the Gentiles, but directed his addresses, like arrows, to the hearts and habits, the bosoms and business of h's audience. The first generation, consisting of Alexander Campbell, and his father, Barton Warren Stone, and Walter Scott, and their co-laborers, were a remarkable body of men; admirably qualified, both by nature and train ing, for inaugurating the great Restoration Move ment. No other body of men can or ought to usurp their place in the public eye, and in the popular heart; but they were succeeded by a body of men no less remarkable for intellectual vigor and spiritual power, who did their work with the same thoroughness and efficiency. They are not only highly respected, and greatly admired for their abilities, but they are pro foundly loved for their work's sake. Their names, which have become familiar household words, are synonyms of strength and power. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Our Life: Sermons The wisdom mentioned in our text does not relate to the extent of our knowledge, but to its kind. It is not an expansion of learning already gained, but attention to the sphere of life and conduct which is demanded. It is that wisdom of which the fear of the Lord is the beginning. It has its seat in the heart. This is the repeated declaration of the Word of God. Not only is it distinctly stated in the book from which our text is taken, but we find it in the Book of Psalms. And in Job we read, Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To Solomon, indeed, there was one living illustration of the truth Of his teaching to which he could recur, the mem ory of a father Whose heart was perfect toward the Lord his God; but the life of David is open to us, as it was to him, and we have further means of apprehending this truth in the history of men who. Book Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times

Download or read book Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times written by John Owen and published by Puritan Paperbacks. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'O that we might advise one another as to what to do; to help one another to recover from our weaknesses!' Following Jesus is not easy. It involves self-denial, daily cross-bearing, and lifelong obedience. Salvation is promised to the one who 'endures to the end.' Christians need much encouragement, especially in 'difficult times'. This the Lord supplies through pastors who love him and care for his people. John Owen was such a pastor. One way he sought to help his fellow-believers was to hold occasional meetings for spiritual conference and fellowship at which various topics were addressed and discussed, with Owen providing a concluding summary of the proceedings. The short chapters in 'Searching Our Hearts in Difficult Times' contain a number of Owen's talks and sermons on a wide range of subjects which are as relevant to Christians today as they were to believers some three and a half centuries ago. Abridged and made easy to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There’s a seemingly innocuous villain that is taking up residence in the pulpits of countless churches, disrupting the connection between the pastor and the people and keeping the proclamation of God’s word from having its full effect. That villain is the preacher’s notes. Preachers know this all too well. Many wish that they could “preach by heart” without the aid of notes, but are unsure how to do so—and are left feeling frustrated and discouraged by the presence of that disruptive interloper. Author Ryan Tinetti shares an unexpected solution in the form of an ancient and time-tested practice known as the method of loci, or Memory Palace. Surveying portions of classical rhetoric that are especially relevant for contemporary preachers and diving deep into the theory and practice of the Memory Palace, Preaching by Heart plunders these ancient treasures that have been so formative for preachers through the ages but too oft neglected in our own time. When pastors preach by heart, they find greater satisfaction in the homiletic task and their proclamation is even more effective. Preaching by Heart shows how to pitch the notes and reach that goal.

Book Advent of the Heart

Download or read book Advent of the Heart written by Alfred Delp and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-06-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Alfred Delp,S.J., was a heroic German Jesuit priest who was imprisoned and martyred by the Nazis in a Nazi death camp in 1945. At the time of his arrest, he was the Rector of St. Georg Church in Munich, and had a reputation for being a gripping, dynamic preacher, and one who was an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime. He was an important figure in the Resistance movement against Nazism. Accused of conspiring against the Nazi government, he was arrested in 1944, tortured, imprisoned, and executed on Feb 2, 1945. While in prison, Fr. Delp was able to write a few meditations found in this book, which also includes his powerful reflections from prison during the Advent season about the profound spiritual meaning and lessons of Advent, as well as his sermons he gave on the season of Advent at his parish in Munich. These meditations were smuggled out of Berlin and read by friends and parishioners of St. Georg in Munich. His approach to Advent, the season that prepares us for Christmas, is what Fr. Delp called an "Advent of the heart." More than just preparing us for Christmas, it is a spiritual program, a way of life. He proclaimed that our personal, social and historical circumstances, even suffering, offer us entry into the true Advent, our personal journey toward a meeting and dialogue with God. Indeed, his own life, and great sufferings, illustrated the true Advent he preached and wrote about. From his very prison cell he presented a timeless spiritual message, and in an extreme situation, his deep faith gave him the courage to draw closer to God, and to witness to the truth even at the cost of his own life. These meditations will challenge and inspire all Christians to embark upon that same spiritual journey toward union with God, a journey that will transform our lives. ?As one of the last witnesses who knew Fr. Alfred Delp personally, I am very pleased this book will make him better known in America. The more one reads his writings, the more one clearly recognizes the prophetic message for our times! Like his contemporary, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Delp ranks among the great prophets who endured the horror of Nazism and handed down a powerful message for our times.? Karl Kreuser, S.J., from the Foreword
