Book Organized Health Work in Schools With an Account of a Campaign for School Hygiene in Minnesota Classic Reprint

Download or read book Organized Health Work in Schools With an Account of a Campaign for School Hygiene in Minnesota Classic Reprint written by Ernest Bryant Hoag and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organized Health Work in Schools With an Account of a Campaign for School Hygiene in Minnesota In 1900 only 8 cities in America had any organized health work in schools. Since that time over 400 cities have organized departments for the health supervision of school children, and as Dr. Leonard P. Ayres remarks, "this development is without parallel in the history of education." To quote further from Dr. Ayres, "No school (in 1900) had ever heard of a school nurse, for no city in the world employed one; but to-day (1911) 76 American cities have corps of school nurses as permanent parts of their educational forces and 48 cities employ staffs of school dentists." A few years ago the public schools made no provision for the education of the blind, crippled, or mentally deficient, but now in New York City alone there are more than 100 classes for mentally peculiar children, while arrangements are rapidly making for the care of crippled and other classes of physically handicapped children. It was only as recently as 1909 that the first open-air school for tuberculous children was opened in Providence, but to-day such schools may be found in something over 40 cities. The special study of the mentally deficient child has engaged the attention of public school educators for a period of less than three years, but at present plans are rapidly making in many progressive towns and cities for the careful study of such children by the employment of exact psychological methods. All these facts indicate that the physical care of children is engaging the attention of the serious-minded school men. Yet, while all these facts are interesting and significant, it must not be forgotten that no uniform methods of health organization in schools have been evolved, and that there still exist the most widely divergent beliefs and practices in this respect. Health work in schools needs standardization. The experiences of cities already organized in school health matters ought to be studied by other places attempting such organization for the first time. In general it may be safely stated that schools receive what they pay for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Health Education in Rural Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Health Education in Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by J. Mace Andress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Education in Rural Schools The winning of the war has long commanded the atten tion of the American people. Our resources have been spent lavishly to make secure our liberties and the freedom of the world. Such a supreme crisis in our history revealed inspir ing patriotism, but also a pathetic weakness in our citizens. Out of 06 men who were examined on the first draft, a vast army of men were rejected on physical grounds. A large proportion of these physical defects might have been corrected or prevented if the schools had been doing their part to train children to conserve and improve their health. Such a serious flaw in public education must challenge the efforts of educators throughout the land. Several States, realizing the gravity of the situation, have recently passed laws making physical education obligatory and requiring a more extensive and practical teaching of hygiene.' The war has compelled us to recognize, as we never did before, the fundamental importance of health education as preparedness, not only for military service, but also for happy and efficient participation in civil life. Contrary to tradition and popular belief, country children have been found to be as defective physically and in many cases more defective than city children. Comparatively little has been done so far for the health of country children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Suggestions for a Program for Health Teaching

Download or read book Suggestions for a Program for Health Teaching written by J. Mace Andress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for a Program for Health Teaching: In the Elementary Schools Probably no field of education within the last two years has shown more originality and vitality than that of health education. Experiments have been made not only by individual teachers but by groups of teachers on a large scale. In the midst of such inter esting developments the need of a sound program of health educa tion extending through the grades has become insistent. In this pioneer field certain ideals, principles, and methods have earned merited approval, but the work done has been limited to particular problems. Every serious student of the health situation feels this keenly, but the time is not yet ripe for a definite and complete course of study in health teaching. The whole field is still in a somewhat uncertain state. Educators in general have lost faith in the old fashioned methods. Book The Modern Health Crusade

Download or read book The Modern Health Crusade written by National Tuberculosis Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Health Crusade: A National Program of Health Instruction in Schools; Manual for Teachers, Superintendents and Health Workers When boys and girls, in all states of the Union and in foreign countries in three continents, take up the systematic performance of health chores, a phenomenon is presented that invites explanation. The health chores have of themselves no attraction for the average child; they are to him odious duties, performed only under social or parental pressure. Good reasons for doing hygienic duties are set forth attractively in the modern type of school text-book. N 0 set of facts to be learned in school has greater value, but usually the pupil fails to translate this knowledge into his own conduct except under outside in uences. Education among us consists too much in telling and not enough in training. The Modern Health Crusade brings into the schools a distinct in uence serving to reinforce established courses in hygiene, physiology, physical training and sanitation. It does not con ict with such courses but adds vitality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Health in the School written by J. S. C. Elkington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health in the School: Or Hygiene for Teachers Looked at from the point of view of self-interest, teachers have every motive for preventing whatever may interfere with the children's work. There is nothing more brain-dulling than impure air, and the purblindness which arises from defective light management and improper working position. School-stress translated into plain language means, in the vast majority of cases, ignorant school management. It is of little use to study new educational methods unless the material on which they are to be tried is brought into a reasonable condition of physiological receptivity. Book School Health Supervision in Minneapolis Minn Classic Reprint

Download or read book School Health Supervision in Minneapolis Minn Classic Reprint written by Taliaferro Clark and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Health Supervision in Minneapolis, Minn This latter board comprises seven members - two members of the city council and the mayor, who serve as exofficio members, and four other members who are appointed by the mayor with the approval of the city council. The authority to maintain health supervision over the public schools is vested in the board of education and is exercised by the department of hygiene. The public health administration of the city is under the division of public health of the board of public welfare. Coordination of Functions. In May, 1920, the board of education, with the approval of the board of public welfare, designated the commissioner of public health to act also as director of the department of hygiene of the board of education and transferred to the account of the board of public welfare funds in the amount of the salary formerly paid the director of hygiene. This action by the board of education was a distinctly progressive step, both from the standpoint of economy and efficiency, and is in accord with the present tendency of governmental agencies to harmonize the work of the various boards and bureaus which have nearly identical functions. The coordination of the health work in the schools with the work of the city department of health extends, at present, only to the employment of a common director, and does not permit of the interchangeable utilization of the services of the personnel of the department of hygiene and the division of public health in school health work and general public health work. School Buildings and School Population. The board of education operates 84 public schools, including 6 high schools, 3 junior high schools, a school for crippled children, and a farm school for boys. In respect to the latter, the board of education exercises no other function than that of supplying teachers. As is the case in practically all cities, the school building program has been of gradual evolution, and has not kept pace with increase in the population, owing to the lack of funds. For this reason some of the lower classes are overcrowded and a few of the school buildings are of rather ancient construction. In the main, however, the newer buildings are in keeping with the requirements of modern school architecture. The attendance at the public schools at the time of this survey was 60,146. Exclusive of the high schools, the attendance was 50,080. School Health Supervision. Minnesota has no State school medical inspection law, but school medical inspection is permitted under regulations of the State board of health which have the force of law. Download or read book The Health of the School Child Classic Reprint written by W. Leslie Mackenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Health of the School Child It seems worth while to give some detail of the methods followed in two German cities, if only to show' that the medical examination of school children is after all a very simple matter, and does not involve any reconstruction in our theory of the State or of its relation to local authorities. If we force the child to school, we have no right to force him to read with defective eyes, or to expect him to hear with defective ears. I have never met a single parent that disputes this proposition. On the contrary, I have met scores that, on having their attention called to the importance of good eyes and ears, have forthwith taken their children to the doctor to learn whether things were all right.
