The text is meant to be useful to surgeons in practice, both in general surgery and in surgical subspecialties; practice management teams of surgical practices and to resident physicians in surgery. Part 1 of the text addresses the CPT coding process, the relative valuation system (RVU), the ICD-9 and ICD-10 systems of classification, Medicare Part B payment rules for physicians, the DRG system and Medicare Part A payment for hospitals, alternative payment models, and the myriad of quality measures of importance to surgeons. Part 2 of the text addresses specific coding in areas where surgeons historically have had the most difficulty. This is not meant to substitute for the available texts, software or courses on coding, but to provide the historical background and rationale for the specific coding rules. Principles of Coding and Reimbursement for Surgeons will be of great value to general surgeons and surgical subspecialists in private practice, academic institutions, and employed positions. It will provide direction to management teams from practice and institutional levels. It is also of use to surgical trainees and to researchers in health policy issues.

Book Terminology Ontology and their Implementations

Download or read book Terminology Ontology and their Implementations written by Peter L. Elkin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised new edition containing numerous new and heavily updated chapters provides readers with the essential information needed to understand the central topics of terminology in healthcare, the understanding of which is an asset to be leveraged in care and research. Twenty-five years ago the notion that terminology should be concept-based was all but unknown in healthcare; now almost all important terminologies are at least partly concept-based. With no general model of what a terminology was or should be, there were no tools to support terminology development and maintenance. Steady progress since then has improved both terminology content and the technology and processes used to sustain that content. This new edition uses real world examples from the health sector to delineate the principal issues and solutions for the field of data representation. It includes a history of terminologies and in particular their use in healthcare, including inter-enterprise clinical and research data aggregation. Terminology, Ontology and their Implementations covers the basis, authoring and use of ontologies and reference terminologies including the formalisms needed to use them safely. The editor and his team of carefully chosen contributors exhaustively reviews the field of concept-based indexing and provides readers with an understanding of natural language processing and its application to health terminologies. The book discusses terminology services and the architecture for terminological servers and consequently serves as the basis for study for all students of health informatics.

Book Integrating Biomedical Information

Download or read book Integrating Biomedical Information written by Assa Reichert and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organisations in health care are moving into the information age since two or three decades. Never was the pace of this movement as fast as today. "Integrating Biomedical Information: from e-Cell to e-Patient", the title of this EFMI publication, indicates the broad spectrum of Medical Informatics. Both concepts in the title are new - the result of data collection, data processing and information analysis. It is expected this data and information to be the knowledge base for a better understanding of mankind and also to assist us in making information (evidence) based decisions in health care. We expect that this will give us a better perspective of the human body, its functions and that it will ultimately lead us to better health care. Recent developments in clinical terminology construction have brought together specialists from different disciplines, such as Medicine, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Linguistics. Different genres of clinical terminologies co-exist: the former distinction between formal terminologies, classifications, vocabularies, nomenclatures and thesauri is increasingly being challenged by the notion of "ontology". There are controversies between linguistic approaches (aiming at representing term meanings) and ontological ones (which strive for a representation of biomedical reality). There is also an increasing quest for "good practice" recommendations for biomedical terminologies.) This book is the third volume of the EFMI STC conferences. This series is a subseries of the MIR-conferences published by IOS Press.

Book Health Informatics Meets EHealth

Download or read book Health Informatics Meets EHealth written by D. Hayn and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ineffective discharge management can jeopardize the successful completion of hospital treatment; but a well managed transition from hospital care to care at home depends on the efficient exchange of information with out-patient healthcare providers and professionals. This is just one way in which ICT can support healthcare and provide tools which help health professions to identify and communicate relevant data. Such tools will be increasingly important in future healthcare systems, and indeed a Europe-wide ICT infrastructure for information and data exchange may do much to revolutionize the quality of healthcare. It is therefore essential that infrastructures build on well-established standards such as Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), even if this initially takes longer to implement. This book presents the proceedings of the annual Health Informatics meets eHealth conference, held in Vienna, Austria, in May 2017. The special topic chosen for eHealth2017 is Digital Insight – Information-Driven Health & Care, and the conference addressed the increasingly international focus of eHealth and the importance of cross-border health ICT. The papers presented here cover many eHealth topics, from maternity records to rehabilitation and from staff training to information exchange. Future ICT systems will inevitably involve machine learning and predictive analytics in order to provide actionable information to health professionals and support preventive healthcare concepts, and this book provides an insight into current research in health informatics and eHealth, addressing many issues central to the future of health and care. The book will be of interest to all healthcare researchers and practitioners.

Book Health Data in the Information Society

Download or read book Health Data in the Information Society written by György Surján and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MIE 2002 is the XVIIth international conference of the European Federation of Medical Informatics. Today, mankind builds up the information society, enabled by the underlying rapid development in computer technology. The significance of the spread of the internet is comparable to the significance of Gutenberg's invention. On one hand it both helps dissemination of data and knowledge and sharing of ideas. On the other hand the achievements may divide the society, as did non-literacy deprive many people from knowledge throughout centuries. Today millions of people are isolated from an incredibly large amount of information because of "computer non-literacy," and a new elite mastering the information society has appeared. However, the ease of production and dissemination of information may foster thoughtless communication, and has lead to a flood of information and disinformation. We have to learn how to behave in this new situation, in which the dissemination of information - at an international level - is totally uncontrolled. In the area of medical or health informatics these questions are more serious. Lack of information, false or inadequate information, as well as improper interpretation of accurate information may seriously harm patients. And the process may go out of control of the physician, i.e. patients can "treat" themselves just by visiting some health sites on the net. Everybody may throw a message in a bottle in information flood, and everybody may pick up messages at any time. Can we do anything to ensure that all messages are valid? Can we guarantee that our messages reach the intended audience? Can we secure that content has not changed on its way? Do we know that people getting our messages will interpret them correctly? Are we able to understand the intention of a sender, when we get a message totally out of context? These questions build up the framework of MIE2002.
