Book Hatshepsut Queen of Sheba

Download or read book Hatshepsut Queen of Sheba written by Emmet Scott and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the centuries the figure of the Queen of Sheba has loomed large in poetry and romance. The mysterious Queen, who is said to have visited Solomon in Jerusalem, has cast her spell over poets, painters and storytellers of many lands. The people of Ethiopia have always claimed her as her own, and to this day boast that her son Menelik - fruit of the union between the Queen and Solomon - stole the Ark of the Covenant from the Temple in Jerusalem after Solomon's death. For all that, historians have been more sanguine, and increasingly over the past century the academic community has veered towards consigning both royal characters to the fairyland of myth and romance. In 1952, however, Immanuel Velikovsky made an astonishing claim: He announced that not only did the Queen of Sheba exist, but that she left numerous portraits of herself as well as an account of her famous journey to Israel. The Queen of Sheba, Velikovsky announced, was none other than Hatshepsut, the female "pharaoh" of Egypt, who built a beautiful temple outside Thebes on the walls of which she immortalized the most important event of her life: an expedition to the Land of Punt. Punt, said Velikovsky, was one and the same as Israel. In this volume historian Emmet Scott brings forward dramatic new evidence in support of Velikovsky. He finds, among other things, that: - Ancient Israel, just like Punt, was a renowned source of frankincense. - Egyptian documents, generally ignored in academic circles, unequivocally place Punt in the region of Syria/Palestine. - The goddess Hathor was known as the 'Lady of Punt,' but she was also known as the 'lady of Byblos'. - The Egyptians claimed to be of Puntite origin, but Jewish and Phoenician legends claimed that the Egyptians came from their part of the world, and the Phoenicians named Misor - almost certainly the same as Osiris - as the Phoenician hero who founded the Nile Kingdom. This, and a wealth of additional evidence, has, Scott argues, shifted the burden of proof onto Velikovsky's critics; and the identification of Hatshepsut with the Queen of Sheba will eventually compel the rewriting of all the history books. Joyce Tyldesley's 'Hatchepsut' deals with the same character, but from an entirely conventional viewpoint. She never even raises the possibility that the accepted chronology of Hatshepsut's life may be wrong. In his 'Ages in Chaos,' however, Immanuel Velikovsky did raise this possibility, and was the first to suggest that Hatshepsut be identified with the Queen of Sheba. Velikovsky's work remains extremely popular, and the present book aims to take his ideas forward, exploring new evidence that has come to light since his death. This new evidence, Scott argues, puts the equation of Hatshepsut with the Queen of Sheba virtually beyond doubt.

Book excerpt: The female pharaoh Hatshepsut reigned for nearly twenty years during Egypt’s early New Kingdom in the fifteenth century B.C. First acting as regent for her young nephew/stepson Thutmose III, she in time assumed the title of king and exercised the full powers of the throne as senior co-ruler. In accordance with Egyptian tradition, Hatshepsut was often depicted as a male king. After her death, however, monuments bearing her image were ruthlessly defaced, and her name was erased from historical accounts. Hatshepsut’s rise to power and the nature of her kingship have long been debated by scholars. This fascinating period, one of immense artistic creativity, is illuminated by this volume’s rich presentation of monumental royal sculpture and reliefs, ceremonial objects, exquisite personal items for everyday use, and dazzling jewelry. Essays focus on influences from the neighboring Near East, Nubia, and the Aegean; the innovative architecture built by Hatshepsut; powerful figures in the royal court during her reign; archaeological finds from this period; and mysteries surrounding the destruction of Hatshepsut’s statues and the obliteration of her name. The first in-depth treatment of the subject, 'Daughter of Re' is an important investigation into the impact of Hatshepsut’s reign on the history, culture, and artistic output of Egypt.

Download or read book Profane Egyptologists written by Paul Harrison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely believed that the practice of ancient Egyptian religion ceased with the end of pharaonic culture and the rise of Christianity. However, an organised reconstruction and revival of the authentic practice of Egyptian, or Kemetic religion has been growing, almost undocumented, for nearly three decades. Profane Egyptologists is the first in-depth study of the now-global phenomenon of Kemeticism. Presenting key players in their own words, the book utilises extensive interviews to reveal a continuum of beliefs and practices spanning eight years of community growth. The existence of competing visions of Egypt, which employ ancient material and academic resources, questions the position of Egyptology as a gatekeeper of Egypt's past. Exploring these boundaries, the book highlights the politised and economic factors driving the discipline's self-conception. Could an historically self-imposed insular nature have harmed Egyptology as a field, and how could inclusive discussion help guard against further isolationism? Profane Egyptologists is both an Egyptological study of Kemeticism, and a critical study of the discipline of Egyptology itself. It will be of value to scholars and students of archaeology and Egyptology, cultural heritage, religion online, phenomenology, epistemology, pagan studies and ethnography, as well as Kemetics and devotees of Egyptian culture.

Book Dark Little Women

Download or read book Dark Little Women written by R. L. Wood and published by R. L. Wood. This book was released on with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you like genre benders and fractured tales, you'll love this reinvention of classic horror story villains, now presenting women as the main characters. Featuring Dorian Gray as housemother and Doctor Jekyll as the in house physician to a group of blood-thirsty young women in need of rehab. The goal? To conquer their innate urges and be free of their curse so they can live out the rest of their lives as mortals. This wicked tale has a fun menagerie of gothic characters including a vampire, werewolf, ghost, Frankenstein's monster and more. There is a little romance and a touch of humor making this story a well rounded, fun read that's sure to appeal to everyone. Reviewers testimony pulled from Amazon.com: -Girl Power! I enjoyed the fact that it was a play on old favorites, and women filled most roles. It was a fun read with a fast pace. The author did a good job with the storyline, and the ending surprised me! I’m looking forward to book 2. - Pure Class: So glad I read this book. In lesser hands, the reimagining of world famous characters would have been easy to follow hackneyed stereotypes but R.L Wood has managed to reinvent the likes of Dorian Gray, Dracula and Jeckyll and Hyde among others in a way that makes them believable in their own right. Coupled with a story of redemption, rescues and treachery that rattles along without sagging and I think you have a winner. - A Really Enjoyable Book: It's those kinds of books where you feel sad once it has ended. I loved the characters, especially Dr Jekyll and V, and I enjoyed the way the story was written. I would recommend this to everyone, whether you like dark fantasy fan or not. Can't wait for book 2 -Unique off-beat Horror story! I really enjoyed reading this story of Dorian and her renegade immortals trying to seek redemption whilst at the same time trying to keep to a deal she made with the devil. It's different and unique, and I loved the fact that all the traditional male characters are now female. I particularly enjoyed the vicious Hyde! The dynamic between the characters is interesting and cleverly done, with some off-beat funny moments thrown in too. I for one am looking forward to the next instalment!! -Classical horror stories get a new twist in these tales and women become the main characters. (I would love to know the inspiration.) I enjoyed the descriptions and clever titles and names. I hope the highly creative R.L. Wood will put this on audio–with a version using more dialogue. Looking forward to what this author writes next.

Book Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts

Download or read book Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts written by Jeremy Naydler and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A radical reinterpretation of the Pyramid Texts as shamanic mystical wisdom rather than funerary rituals • Reveals the mystical nature of Egyptian civilization denied by orthodox Egyptologists • Examines the similarity between the pharaoh’s afterlife voyage and shamanic journeying • Shows shamanism to be the foundation of the Egyptian mystical tradition To the Greek philosophers and other peoples of the ancient world, Egypt was regarded as the home of a profound mystical wisdom. While there are many today who still share that view, the consensus of most Egyptologists is that no evidence exists that Egypt possessed any mystical tradition whatsoever. Jeremy Naydler’s radical reinterpretation of the Pyramid Texts--the earliest body of religious literature to have survived from ancient Egypt--places these documents into the ritual context in which they belong. Until now, the Pyramid Texts have been viewed primarily as royal funerary texts that were used in the liturgy of the dead pharaoh or to aid him in his afterlife journey. This emphasis on funerary interpretation has served only to externalize what were actually experiences of the living, not the dead, king. In order to understand the character and significance of the extreme psychological states the pharaoh experienced--states often involving perilous encounters with alternate realities--we need to approach them as spiritual and religious phenomena that reveal the extraordinary possibilities of human consciousness. It is the shamanic spiritual tradition, argues Naydler, that is the undercurrent of the Pyramid Texts and that holds the key to understanding both the true nature of these experiences and the basis of ancient Egyptian mysticism.

Book Thinking about Leadership

Download or read book Thinking about Leadership written by Nannerl O. Keohane and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-16 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and insightful look at what leaders do, how and why they do it, and the challenges they face Leadership is essential to collective human endeavor, from setting and accomplishing goals for a neighborhood block association, to running a Fortune 500 company, to mobilizing the energies of a nation. Political philosophers have focused largely on how to prevent leaders from abusing their power, yet little attention has been paid to what it actually feels like to hold power, how leaders go about their work, and how they relate to the people they lead. In Thinking about Leadership, Nannerl Keohane draws on her experience as the first woman president of Duke University and former president of Wellesley College, as well as her expertise as a leading political theorist, to deepen our understanding of what leaders do, how and why they do it, and the pitfalls and challenges they face. Keohane engages readers in a series of questions that shed light on every facet of leadership. She considers the traits that make a good leader, including sound judgment, decisiveness, integrity, social skill, and intelligence; the role that gender plays in one's ability to attain and wield power; ethics and morality; the complex relationship between leaders and their followers; and the unique challenges of democratic leadership. Rich with lessons and insights from leaders and political thinkers down through the ages, including Aristotle, Queen Elizabeth I, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Nelson Mandela, Thinking about Leadership is a must-read for current and future leaders, and for anyone concerned about our prospects for good governance.
